In 2009 promoveerde hij op het onderwerp "Magnetic resonance imaging of atherosclerosis, studies in visceral obesity". Het onderzoek richtte zich in essentie op de relatie tussen viscerale obesitas en de geassocieerde metabole afwijkingen, en het atherosclerotisch proces gekwantificeerd door magnetic resonance imaging als beeldvormende techniek.
