Pure red cell aplasia (PRCA) is a rare disease characterised by anaemia and low reticulocyte count, caused by absence of erythropoiesis in the bone marrow. This report describes a case of a ring-calcified thymoma that led to the development of PRCA. Moreover, we provide an overview on the classification of thymoma and the pathophysiology and treatment of PRCA. Abstract

Type 2 diabetes is associated with an increased risk of developing macro and microvascular complications. Nevertheless, there is substantial heterogeneity between people with type 2 diabetes in their risk of developing such complications. Personalised medicine for people with type 2 diabetes may aid in efficient and tailored diabetes care for those at increased risk of developing such complications. Recently, progress has been made in the development of personalised diabetes care in several area... Abstract

Zandstra TE, Palmen M, Hazekamp MG, Meyns B, Beeres SLMA, Holman ER, Kiès P, Jongbloed MRM, Vliegen HW, Egorova AD, Schalij MJ, Tops LF
Ventricular assist device (VAD) implantation is an established treatment modality for patients with end-stage heart failure, and improves symptoms and survival. In the Netherlands, it is not yet routinely considered in patients with congenital heart disease and failing systemic right ventricle (SRV). Recently, a VAD was implanted in 2 SRV patients, one who underwent a Mustard procedure during infancy for transposition of the great arteries (male, 47 years old) and one with a congenitally correct... Van't Klooster CC, Ridker PM, Hjortnaes J, van der Graaf Y, Asselbergs FW, Westerink J, Aerts JGJV, Visseren FLJ
Aims: Low-grade inflammation, measured by elevated plasma concentrations of high-sensitive C-reactive protein (CRP), is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). There is evidence that low-grade inflammation is also related to a higher risk of cancer. The present prospective cohort study evaluates the relation between low-grade systemic inflammation and risk of cancer in patients with stable CVD. Methods and results: In total, 7178 patients with stable CVD and plasma CRP levels ≤10 mg/L we... Abstract

European heart journal. Cardiovascular Imaging, Volume 20, Issue 12, 1 1 2019, Pages 1388-1394 Prognostic implications of global, left ventricular myocardial work efficiency before cardiac resynchronization therapy. van der Bijl P, Vo NM, Kostyukevich MV, Mertens B, Ajmone Marsan N, Delgado V, Bax JJ
Aims: Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) restores mechanical efficiency to the failing left ventricular (LV) by resynchronization of contraction. Global, LV myocardial work efficiency (GLVMWE) can be quantified non-invasively with echocardiography. The prognostic implication of GLVMWE remains unexplored, and we therefore related GLVMWE before CRT to long-term prognosis. Methods and results: Data were analysed from an ongoing registry of patients with Class I indications for CRT. GLVMWE was... Abstract

With the current trend in animal health surveillance toward risk-based designs and a gradual transition to output-based standards, greater flexibility in surveillance design is both required and allowed. However, the increase in flexibility requires more transparency regarding surveillance, its activities, design and implementation. Such transparency allows stakeholders, trade partners, decision-makers and risk assessors to accurately interpret the validity of the surveillance outcomes. This pap... Abstract

Objective: Takotsubo syndrome (TTS) is characterized by acute left ventricular dysfunction, which can contribute to intraventricular thrombus and embolism. Still, prevalence and clinical impact of thrombus formation and embolic events on outcome of TTS patients remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate clinical features and outcomes of patients with and without intraventricular thrombus or embolism. Additionally, factors associated with thrombus formation or embolism, as well as predictors... Abstract

Archives of orthopaedic and trauma surgery, Volume 140, Issue 7, 23 4 2019, Pages 877-886 Early mobilization versus plaster immobilization of simple elbow dislocations: a cost analysis of the FuncSiE multicenter randomized clinical trial. Van Lieshout EMM, Iordens GIT, Polinder S, Eygendaal D, Verhofstad MHJ, Schep NWL, Den Hartog D, FuncSiE Trial Investigators
Introduction: The primary aim was to assess and compare the total costs (direct health care costs and indirect costs due to loss of production) after early mobilization versus plaster immobilization in patients with a simple elbow dislocation. It was hypothesized that early mobilization would not lead to higher direct and indirect costs. Materials and methods: This study used data of a multicenter randomized clinical trial (FuncSiE trial). From August 25, 2009 until September 18, 2012, 100 adult... Abstract

Behavioral ecology : official journal of the International Society for Behavioral Ecology, Volume 31, Issue 1, 22 4 2019, Pages 247-260 Genetic monogamy despite frequent extrapair copulations in "strictly monogamous" wild jackdaws. Gill LF, van Schaik J, von Bayern AMP, Gahr ML
"Monogamy" refers to different components of pair exclusiveness: the social pair, sexual partners, and the genetic outcome of sexual encounters. Avian monogamy is usually defined socially or genetically, whereas quantifications of sexual behavior remain scarce. Jackdaws (Corvus monedula) are considered a rare example of strict monogamy in songbirds, with lifelong pair bonds and little genetic evidence for extrapair (EP) offspring. Yet jackdaw copulations, although accompanied by loud c... Abstract
