Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Volume 53, Issue 6, 1 1 2009, Pages 501-510 Exenatide reduces infarct size and improves cardiac function in a porcine model of ischemia and reperfusion injury. Timmers L, Henriques JP, de Kleijn DP, Devries JH, Kemperman H, Steendijk P, Verlaan CW, Kerver M, Piek JJ, Doevendans PA, Pasterkamp G, Hoefer IE
Objectives: This study sought to examine whether exenatide is capable of reducing myocardial infarct size. Background: Exenatide is a glucagon-like peptide (GLP)-1 analogue with insulinotropic and insulinomimetic properties. Because insulin and GLP-1 have been described as reducing apoptosis, exenatide might confer cardioprotection after acute myocardial infarction (MI). Methods: Pigs were randomized to exenatide or phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) treatment after 75 min of coronary artery ligati... Abstract

Journal of child neurology, Volume 24, Issue 5, 23 4 2009, Pages 600-602 Paroxysmal tonic upgaze presenting as a clinical isolated syndrome. Senbil N, Yilmaz D, Yüksel D, Gürer Y
We report a 3.5-year-old boy with sudden onset of episodic upward deviation of the eyes that led to diagnosis of paroxysmal tonic upgaze. Cranial magnetic resonance imaging showed right-hand side dominant bilateral hyperintense lesions in the mesencephalon and the thalamus on T2-weighted images. These lesions suggested a demyelinating pathology. Corticosteroid treatment was started. The episodes of upward eye deviation and the lesions on magnetic resonance imaging completely resolved after 3 day... Abstract

Significant progress has been made in the clinical management of a variety of cardiovascular diseases. Nevertheless, the therapeutic efficacy of the current treatment modalities for atherosclerosis and restenosis is not fully sufficient in a large proportion of patients. One of the major contributing factors is the clinical and biological heterogeneity of these still life-threatening diseases, which involve processes that we do not fully understand at the moment. Over the past decades, it has be... Abstract

Disease markers, Volume 26, Issue 2, 1 1 2009, Pages 75-83 Metabolic background determines the importance of NOS3 polymorphisms in restenosis after percutaneous coronary intervention: A study in patients with and without the metabolic syndrome. Pons D, Monraats PS, Zwinderman AH, de Maat MP, Doevendans PA, de Winter RJ, Tio RA, Waltenberger J, Jukema JW
Variation in the NOS3 gene has been related to the development of restenosis. The Glu298Asp polymorphism has previously been investigated for its effect on NO levels and the development of restenosis. However, the variability of findings gave rise to the hypothesis that the functional significance of this polymorphism may only become manifest under conditions of endothelial dysfunction. Since patients with the metabolic syndrome are known to have endothelial dysfunction, we aimed to investigate... Abstract
