The Muller F element (4.2 Mb, ~80 protein-coding genes) is an unusual autosome of Drosophila melanogaster; it is mostly heterochromatic with a low recombination rate. To investigate how these properties impact the evolution of repeats and genes, we manually improved the sequence and annotated the genes on the D. erecta, D. mojavensis, and D. grimshawi F elements and euchromatic domains from the Muller D element. We find that F elements have greater transposon density (25-50%) than euchromatic re... Abstract

Journal of nuclear cardiology : official publication of the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology, Volume 22, Issue 2, 3 1 2015, Pages 229-245 Myocardial viability as integral part of the diagnostic and therapeutic approach to ischemic heart failure. Bax JJ, Delgado V
Chronic heart failure is a major public-health problem with a high prevalence, complex treatment, and high mortality. A careful and comprehensive analysis is needed to provide optimal (and personalized) therapy to heart failure patients. The main 4 non-invasive imaging techniques (echocardiography, magnetic resonance imaging, multi-detector-computed tomography, and nuclear imaging) provide information on cardiovascular anatomy and function, which form the basis of the assessment of the pathophys... Future cardiology, Volume 11, Issue 2, 1 1 2015, Pages 153-169 Transcatheter mitral valve repair therapies for primary and secondary mitral regurgitation. Al Amri I, van der Kley F, Schalij MJ, Ajmone Marsan N, Delgado V
Mitral regurgitation is one of the most prevalent valvular heart diseases and its prevalence is related to population aging. Elderly patients with age-associated co-morbidities have an increased risk for conventional mitral valve surgery. Transcatheter mitral valve repair has emerged as a feasible and safe alternative in patients with contraindications for surgery or high operative risk. Several transcatheter mitral repair technologies have been developed during the last decade. While the develo... Abstract

Journal of virological methods, Volume 217, 21 3 2015, Pages 55-63 Optimization of an enzyme-linked lectin assay suitable for rapid antigenic characterization of the neuraminidase of human influenza A(H3N2) viruses. Westgeest KB, Bestebroer TM, Spronken MI, Gao J, Couzens L, Osterhaus AD, Eichelberger M, Fouchier RA, de Graaf M
Antibodies to neuraminidase (NA), the second most abundant surface protein of the influenza virus, contribute to protection against influenza virus infection. Although traditional and miniaturized thiobarbituric acid (TBA) neuraminidase inhibition (NI) assays have been successfully used to characterize the antigenic properties of NA, these methods are cumbersome and not easily amendable to rapid screening. An additional difficulty of the NI assay is the interference by hemagglutinin (HA)-specifi... Abstract

European journal of vascular and endovascular surgery : the official journal of the European Society for Vascular Surgery, Volume 49, Issue 4, 18 3 2015, Pages 480-486 Elastin is a key regulator of outward remodeling in arteriovenous fistulas. Wong CY, Rothuizen TC, de Vries MR, Rabelink TJ, Hamming JF, van Zonneveld AJ, Quax PH, Rotmans JI
Objectives: Maturation failure is the major limitation of arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) as hemodialysis access conduits. Indeed, 30-50% of AVFs fail to mature due to intimal hyperplasia and insufficient outward remodeling. Elastin has emerged as an important determinant of vascular remodeling. Here the role of elastin in AVF remodeling in elastin haplodeficient (eln(+/-)) mice undergoing AVF surgery has been studied. Methods: Unilateral AVFs between the branch of the jugular vein and carotid art... Abstract

Academic radiology, Volume 22, Issue 5, 13 2 2015, Pages 640-645 Support for external validity of radiological anatomy tests using volumetric images. Ravesloot CJ, van der Gijp A, van der Schaaf MF, Huige JC, Vincken KL, Mol CP, Bleys RL, ten Cate OT, van Schaik JP
Rationale and objectives: Radiology practice has become increasingly based on volumetric images (VIs), but tests in medical education still mainly involve two-dimensional (2D) images. We created a novel, digital, VI test and hypothesized that scores on this test would better reflect radiological anatomy skills than scores on a traditional 2D image test. To evaluate external validity we correlated VI and 2D image test scores with anatomy cadaver-based test scores. Materials and methods: In 2012,... Abstract
