Understanding the genomic basis of memory processes may help in combating neurodegenerative disorders. Hence, we examined the associations of common genetic variants with verbal short-term memory and verbal learning in adults without dementia or stroke (N = 53,637). We identified novel loci in the intronic region of CDH18, and at 13q21 and 3p21.1, as well as an expected signal in the APOE/APOC1/TOMM40 region. These results replicated in an independent sample. Functional and bioinformatic analyse... Abstract

Journal of the American Society of Echocardiography : official publication of the American Society of Echocardiography, Volume 36, Issue 2, 14 2 2022, Pages 163-171 Effects of Atrial Ischemia on Left Atrial Remodeling in Patients with ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction. Montero-Cabezas JM, Abou R, Chimed S, Fortuni F, Goedemans L, Ajmone Marsan N, Bax JJ, Delgado V
Background: Adverse left atrial (LA) remodeling after ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) has been associated with poor prognosis. Flow impairment in the dominant coronary atrial branch (CAB) may affect large areas of LA myocardium, potentially leading to adverse LA remodeling during follow-up. The aim of this study was to assess echocardiographic LA remodeling in patients with STEMI with impaired coronary flow in the dominant CAB. Methods: Of 897 patients with STEMI, 69 patients... Prehospital and disaster medicine, Volume 37, Issue 5, 11 2 2022, Pages 600-608 Managing Hospital Capacity: Achievements and Lessons from the COVID-19 Pandemic. de Koning ER, Boogers MJ, Beeres SL, Kramer ID, Dannenberg WJ, Schalij MJ
Introduction: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic challenged health care systems in an unprecedented way. Due to the enormous amount of hospital ward and intensive care unit (ICU) admissions, regular care came to a standstill, thereby overcrowding ICUs and endangering (regular and COVID-19-related) critical care. Acute care coordination centers were set up to safely manage the influx of COVID-19 patients. Furthermore, treatments requiring ICU surveillance were postponed leading to i... Abstract

Objective: To investigate the prognostic impact of left ventricular (LV) diastolic dysfunction in patients with moderate aortic stenosis (AS) and preserved LV systolic function. Methods: Patients with a first diagnosis of moderate AS (aortic valve area >1.0 and ≤1.5 cm2) and preserved LV systolic function (LV ejection fraction ≥50%) were identified. Frontiers in immunology, Volume 13, 5 1 2022, Pages 958952 A novel monoclonal IgG1 antibody specific for Galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose questions alpha-Gal epitope expression by bacteria. Kreft L, Schepers A, Hils M, Swiontek K, Flatley A, Janowski R, Mirzaei MK, Dittmar M, Chakrapani N, Desai MS, Eyerich S, Deng L, Niessing D, Fischer K, Feederle R, Blank S, Schmidt-Weber CB, Hilger C, Biedermann T, Ohnmacht C
The alpha-Gal epitope (α-Gal) with the determining element galactose-α1,3-galactose can lead to clinically relevant allergic reactions and rejections in xenotransplantation. These immune reactions can develop because humans are devoid of this carbohydrate due to evolutionary loss of the enzyme α1,3-galactosyltransferase (GGTA1). In addition, up to 1% of human IgG antibodies are directed against α-Gal, but the stimulus for the induction of anti-α-Gal antibodies is still unclear. Commensal bacteri... Abstract

Journal of the American Heart Association, Volume 11, Issue 16, 5 1 2022, Pages e024168 Revealing Unforeseen Diagnostic Image Features With Deep Learning by Detecting Cardiovascular Diseases From Apical 4-Chamber Ultrasounds. Cheng LH, Bosch PBJ, Hofman RFH, Brakenhoff TB, Bruggemans EF, van der Geest RJ, Holman ER
Background With the increase of highly portable, wireless, and low-cost ultrasound devices and automatic ultrasound acquisition techniques, an automated interpretation method requiring only a limited set of views as input could make preliminary cardiovascular disease diagnoses more accessible. In this study, we developed a deep learning method for automated detection of impaired left ventricular (LV) function and aortic valve (AV) regurgitation from apical 4-chamber ultrasound cineloops and inve... Journal of the American Heart Association, Volume 11, Issue 16, 5 1 2022, Pages e024581 von Willebrand Factor: A Central Regulator of Arteriovenous Fistula Maturation Through Smooth Muscle Cell Proliferation and Outward Remodeling. Laboyrie SL, de Vries MR, de Jong A, de Boer HC, Lalai RA, Martinez L, Vazquez-Padron RI, Rotmans JI
Background Arteriovenous fistula (AVF) maturation failure is a main limitation of vascular access. Maturation is determined by the intricate balance between outward remodeling and intimal hyperplasia, whereby endothelial cell dysfunction, platelet aggregation, and vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) proliferation play a crucial role. von Willebrand Factor (vWF) is an endothelial cell-derived protein involved in platelet aggregation and VSMC proliferation. We investigated AVF vascular remodeling i... Abstract

Purpose of review: The present article reviews the role of multimodality imaging to improve risk stratification and timing of intervention in patients with valvular heart disease (VHD), and summarizes the latest developments in transcatheter valve interventions. Recent findings: Growing evidence suggests that intervention at an earlier stage may improve outcomes of patients with significant VHD. Objectives: A minimally invasive lobectomy (MIL) is the standard treatment for stage I non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in medically operable patients. Stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR) is recommended for inoperable patients and has been proposed as a potential alternative for operable patients as well. Here, we present the results of a feasibility study in preparation for a nationwide retrospective cohort study, comparing outcomes between both treatment modalities. Methods: In this re... Abstract
Mathematical biosciences and engineering : MBE, Volume 19, Issue 11, 1 1 2022, Pages 10941-10962 Assessing the therapeutic response of tumors to hypoxia-targeted prodrugs with an in silico approach. Yilmaz D, Tuzer M, Unlu MB
Tumor hypoxia is commonly recognized as a condition stimulating the progress of the aggressive phenotype of tumor cells. Hypoxic tumor cells inhibit the delivery of cytotoxic drugs, causing hypoxic areas to receive insufficient amounts of anticancer agents, which results in adverse treatment responses. Being such an obstruction to conventional therapies for cancer, hypoxia might be considered a target to facilitate the efficacy of treatments in the resistive environment of tumor sites. In this r... A major challenge of genome-wide association studies (GWASs) is to translate phenotypic associations into biological insights. Here, we integrate a large GWAS on blood lipids involving 1.6 million individuals from five ancestries with a wide array of functional genomic datasets to discover regulatory mechanisms underlying lipid associations. We first prioritize lipid-associated genes with expression quantitative trait locus (eQTL) colocalizations and then add chromatin interaction data to narrow... Abstract

Background: Thrombosis is a frequent and severe complication in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). Lupus anticoagulant (LA) is a strong acquired risk factor for thrombosis in various diseases and is frequently observed in patients with COVID-19. Whether LA is associated with thrombosis in patients with severe COVID-19 is currently unclear. Objective: To investigate if LA is associated with thrombosis in critically ill patients with COVID-...
