Takotsubo syndrome (TTS) is a poorly recognized heart disease that was initially regarded as a benign condition. Recently, it has been shown that TTS may be associated with severe clinical complications including death and that its prevalence is probably underestimated. Since current guidelines on TTS are lacking, it appears timely and important to provide an expert consensus statement on TTS. The clinical expert consensus document part I summarizes the current state of knowledge on clinical pre... Abstract

We propose and demonstrate reduced symmetry photonic surfaces providing highly controlled Bloch wave propagation. The backward and dual directional propagations have been observed in the proposed low-symmetric periodic structures without variation in the unit-cell filling factor. Frequency-domain analyses present group indices up to negative/positive -237/+96 as strong indicators of the observed directional controlled surface waves driven by the orientation angle in the range of 20°-90°. Petrignani M, Verhoef L, de Graaf M, Richardus JH, Koopmans M
Norovirus causes an estimated 18% of all cases of acute gastroenteritis worldwide and is found to be associated with mortality. To create a first overview of severe complications and chronic sequelae of norovirus infections, a systematic review of literature was performed. Of 3928 individual hits, 176 publications remained for data extraction. Study periods varied between 1974 and 2017, though strongly skewed towards the last decade (n = 122, 70%). Countries of studies were worldwide, though Afr... Abstract

The ductus arteriosus (DA) is a fetal vessel bypassing the still nonfunctional lungs. Closure of the DA at birth is essential for the transition from a fetal to a neonatal circulation. This closing process begins with a physiological contraction followed by definitive anatomical closure. The latter process starts already before birth by development of intimal thickening followed after birth by degeneration of the inner media, including cytolytic necrosis and apoptosis. The DA will remain patent... Abstract

Intravesical bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) is widely used for high-risk, non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer. This report describes four cases that illustrate the spectrum of BCG-induced complications, varying from granulomatous prostatitis to sepsis. There is considerable debate regarding whether inflammation or infection is the predominant mechanism in the pathogenesis of BCG disease. In two patients with a systemic illness, the symptoms first resolved after adding prednisone, indicating a pri... Abstract

Clinical pharmacology and therapeutics, Volume 104, Issue 2, 15 3 2018, Pages 311-316 A Rapid (Differential) Effect of Rosuvastatin and Atorvastatin on High-Sensitivity Cardiac Troponin-I in Subjects With Stable Cardiovascular Disease. Bodde MC, Welsh P, Bergheanu SC, Lijfering WM, Mertens B, Liem AH, van der Laarse A, Sattar N, Jukema JW
Serum troponin within the normal range is an emerging predictor of cardiovascular mortality. We aimed to determine how rapidly high-sensitivity troponin-I (hs-cTnI) levels are lowered by statin therapy in patients with stable cardiovascular disease. In the RADAR substudy, patients were randomized to atorvastatin 20 mg/day (n = 39) or rosuvastatin 10 mg/day (n = 39) and up-titrated at 6-week intervals to 80 mg of atorvastatin or 40 mg of rosuvastatin. Hs-cTnI concentrations were measured at basel... Abstract

Heart rhythm, Volume 15, Issue 11, 9 2 2018, Pages 1683-1689 Reduced left ventricular mechanical dispersion at 6 months follow-up after cardiac resynchronization therapy is associated with superior long-term outcome. van der Bijl P, Khidir MJH, Leung M, Yilmaz D, Mertens B, Ajmone Marsan N, Delgado V, Bax JJ
Background: In heart failure (HF) patients, left ventricular mechanical dispersion (LVMD) reflects heterogeneous mechanical activation of the left ventricle. In HF patients, LVMD can be reduced after CRT. Whether lesser LVMD is associated with improved outcome is unknown. Objective: The purpose of this study was to relate LVMD to long-term prognosis in a large cohort of HF patients after 6 months of cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT). Methods: Clinical, echocardiographic, and ventricular ar... Abstract

American journal of physiology. Heart and circulatory physiology, Volume 315, Issue 3, 4 1 2018, Pages H669-H680 Acute stimulation of the soluble guanylate cyclase does not impact on left ventricular capacitance in normal and hypertrophied porcine hearts in vivo. Alogna A, Schwarzl M, Manninger M, Hamdani N, Zirngast B, Kloth B, Steendijk P, Verderber J, Zweiker D, Westermann D, Blankenberg S, Maechler H, Tschöpe C, Linke WA, Marsche G, Pieske BM, Post H
Experimental data indicate that stimulation of the nitric oxide-soluble guanylate cyclase(sGC)-cGMP-PKG pathway can increase left ventricular (LV) capacitance via phosphorylation of the myofilamental protein titin. We aimed to test whether acute pharmacological sGC stimulation with BAY 41-8543 would increase LV capacitance via titin phosphorylation in healthy and deoxycorticosteroneacetate (DOCA)-induced hypertensive pigs. Nine healthy Landrace pigs and 7 pigs with DOCA-induced hypertension and... Abstract
