Philosophical transactions of the Royal Society of London. Series B, Biological sciences, Volume 380, Issue 1929, 26 4 2025, Pages 20240124 The fish challenge to vertebrate cognitive evolution. Triki Z, van Schaik C, Bshary R
There is tremendous taxonomic variation in the size, shape and structure of vertebrate brains. While many studies use cross-species comparisons to aim at identifying the ecological factors (social and environmental) that explain what cognitive advantages larger brains confer, a more fundamental divide exists between endotherm and ectotherm vertebrates. Relative to body size, ectotherms have ten times smaller brains than endotherms. Existing ecological hypotheses cannot explain this divide, as so... Abstract

Wegdell F, Fryns C, Schick J, Nellissen L, Laporte M, Surbeck M, van Noordwijk MA, Masi S, Hellwig B, Willems EP, Zuberbühler K, van Schaik CP, Stoll S, Townsend SW
Human language is unique among communication systems since many elements are learned and transmitted across generations. Previous research suggests that this process is best predicted by infant-directed communication, i.e., a mode of communication directed by caregivers to children. Despite its importance for language, whether infant-directed communication is unique to humans or rooted more deeply in the primate lineage remains unclear. To assess this, we investigated directed and surrounding vo... Abstract

Lamberte LE, Darby EM, Kiu R, Moran RA, Acuna-Gonzalez A, Sim K, Shaw AG, Kroll JS, Belteki G, Clarke P, Felgate H, Webber MA, Rowe W, Hall LJ, Van Schaik W
Staphylococcus haemolyticus is an important cause of sepsis in preterm infants, with gut colonization being recognized as a risk factor for infection. To better understand the diversity of S. haemolyticus among preterm infants, we generated genome sequences of S. haemolyticus strains (n = 140) from 44 stool samples of 22 preterm infants from four hospitals in England. Core genome phylogenetic analyses, incorporating 126 publicly available S. haemolyticus genome sequences, showed that 85/140 (60.... Abstract
Acta biomaterialia, Volume 202, 21 3 2025, Pages 262-275 Multilayered trabecular meshwork for dynamic in vitro studies in glaucoma research. Gładysz MZ, Fernandes M, Li X, Koch M, Marchena F, Hofman A, de Graaf M, Wolters JC, Kamperman M, Nagelkerke A, Włodarczyk-Biegun MK
Glaucoma, an eye disease causing incremental vision loss, currently has no cure. Its primary cause is the malfunction of the trabecular meshwork (TM), a multilayered tissue in the eye responsible for draining aqueous humor (AH) from the anterior chamber. TM clogging increases outflow resistance, elevates intraocular pressure (IOP), and damages optic nerves, leading to irreversible blindness. Existing in vitro TM models are suboptimal, as they lack the hierarchical structure of the TM. This artic... Abstract

A systematic review and meta-analysis. Robesti D, Micheli F, Rai SN, Fallara G, Gallina A, Montorsi F, Briganti A, Fossati N, van der Heijden AG, Ploussard G, Malavaud B, Martini A
Introduction: Informative censoring (IC) is a statistical bias that occurs when there is an imbalance in the dropout rate among study arms and this imbalance is not random, but can be ascribed to information that is not accounted for. Studies on trimodal therapy (TMT) versus radical cystectomy (RC) yielded conflicting results. We conducted a meta-analysis to assess the potential impact of informative censoring in influencing study outcomes. Materials and methods: A systematic literature search i... Abstract
