Pediatric cardiology, Volume 10, Issue 1, 1 1 1989, Pages 1-9 Anatomic correction for transposition of the great arteries: first follow-up (38 patients). Klautz RJ, Ottenkamp J, Quaegebeur JM, Buis-Liem TN, Rohmer J
Between April 1983 and October 1985, 38 consecutive patients with transposition of the great arteries (TGA) underwent anatomic correction. Ages ranged from 1 day to 284 weeks (mean 26.2 weeks). Simple TGA was present in 17 patients, 17 had an associated ventricular septal defect, and the remaining four had a Taussig-Bing anomaly. Hospital mortality was 2 of 38, with 1 late death. Follow-up time varied from 6 to 35 months. Postoperative cardiac catheterization was performed in 34 of the 36 early... Abstract

A clinical Phase II study was performed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of treatment with interferon gamma in patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma. Patients received interferon gamma by two different regimens: 1. 100 micrograms/m2 3x/week i.v. over 4 h every other week--low dose. 2. 500 micrograms/m2 5x/week i.v. over 24 h every other week--high dose--for non-responders to regimen 1. The response rate, duration of response, survival and toxicity in the two regimens were evaluated. T... Abstract

Circulation research, Volume 62, Issue 6, 1 1 1988, Pages 1247-1258 Sensitivity of left ventricular end-systolic pressure-volume relation to type of loading intervention in dogs. Baan J, Van der Velde ET
The influence of different types of loading intervention on the resulting end-systolic pressure-volume relation (ESPVR) of the left ventricle in situ was investigated in anesthetized open-chest dogs. Left ventricular volume was measured by conductance catheter and pressure was measured by tip-micromanometer. Two loading interventions were applied: a pressure intervention (INp) by gradually occluding the descending aorta and a volume intervention (INv) by rapidly infusing 180 ml blood into the ve... The Thoracic and cardiovascular surgeon, Volume 36, Issue 3, 1 1 1988, Pages 137-140 Assessment of hypertrophy in myocardial biopsies taken during correction of congenital heart disease. Bogers AJ, van der Laarse A, Vliegen HW, Quaegebeur JM, Hollaar L, Egas JM, Cornelisse CJ, Rohmer J, Huysmans HA
Myocardial biopsies were obtained from 27 patients undergoing corrective cardiac surgery for congenital heart disease. Normal hearts of 18 autopsied patients were used as reference. The biopsy material was assessed for desoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) concentration and ploidy profile of cell nuclei in order to quantitate myocardial hypertrophy at the time of operation. DNA-concentration decreased significantly with age (r = -0.76; p less than 0.001). Ploidy profile of myocardial nuclei correlated wi... Abstract

The American journal of physiology, Volume 254, Issue 6 Pt 2, 1 1 1988, Pages H1113-24 Identifiability of left ventricular end-systolic pressure-volume relationships. van der Linden LP, van der Velde ET, Bruschke AV, Baan J
A widely accepted model of the left ventricle (LV) consisting of a time-varying elastance and a nonlinear internal resistance was investigated to make inferences about the identifiability of its parameters by means of simulated experiments. We aimed to retrieve maximum elastance (Emax) and dead volume (Vd) by the usual slope method or end-systolic pressure-volume relations (ESPVR) and by model-based parameter identification. The ESPVR deviated increasingly from the assigned values with increasin... Abstract

Circulation research, Volume 62, Issue 2, 1 1 1988, Pages 395-410 Length of excitation wave and susceptibility to reentrant atrial arrhythmias in normal conscious dogs. Rensma PL, Allessie MA, Lammers WJ, Bonke FI, Schalij MJ
We calculated the wavelength of the atrial impulse in chronically instrumented conscious dogs by measuring both conduction velocity and refractory period: wavelength = refractory period X conduction velocity. Implantation of multiple stimulating and recording electrodes allowed wavelength determination at four different areas: the right and left parts of Bachmann's bundle and the free walls of the right and left atria. During programmed electrical stimulation, three types of arrhythmias wer... Abstract

European journal of cancer & clinical oncology, Volume 24, Issue 2, 1 1 1988, Pages 325-330 Differentiated thyroid cancer: a stage adapted approach to the treatment of regional lymph node metastases. Hamming JF, van de Velde CJ, Fleuren GJ, Goslings BM
The controversy in the management of regional lymph nodes in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer is discussed on the basis of a review of the literature. Since no prospective studies have yet compared limited dissections ('node picking') with more extensive dissections [(modified) radical neck dissection], a retrospective analysis was performed using two patient groups in which patients were managed differently with regard to the preoperative diagnosis and treatment of regional... European journal of cancer & clinical oncology, Volume 24, Issue 2, 1 1 1988, Pages 331-337 Multivariate analysis of survival in differentiated thyroid cancer: the prognostic significance of the age factor. Schelfhout LJ, Creutzberg CL, Hamming JF, Fleuren GJ, Smeenk D, Hermans J, van de Velde CJ, Goslings BM
A retrospective analysis of tumour and patient characteristics was performed in 202 patients with papillary (n = 132) or follicular (n = 70) thyroid carcinoma, in order to identify prognostic factors related to survival. The following facts were found to be unfavourably related to survival: follicular histology, extrathyroidal growth of the primary tumour (stage pT4), regional lymph node involvement (stages pN1-3), presence of distant metastases at diagnosis (stage pM1), male sex (in papillary c... Journal of pharmaceutical and biomedical analysis, Volume 6, Issue 6-8, 1 1 1988, Pages 895-902 Evaluation of sample work-up methods and internal standards for the determination of catecholamines in urine by HPLC with electrochemical detection. Claeys M, Schepers A, Dillen L, De Potter WP
Two sample work-up methods: (I) one consisting of adsorption of the catecholamines onto alumina followed by ion pair extraction and (II) another consisting of isolation by cation exchange and subsequent adsorption onto alumina, have been evaluated for the assay of urinary catecholamines by means of HPLC with electrochemical detection. With the aim of achieving high precision, two internal standards, i.e. dihydroxybenzylamine and epinine, have been compared. The results indicate that clean HPLC c... Abstract

Administration of a single high dose or multiple low doses of isoproterenol (ISO) to rats induces myocardial necrosis and cardiac hypertrophy. To assess the extent of necrosis we measured myocardial activities of creatine kinase (CK) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) in the first days after ISO-treatment. After a single high dose and multiple low doses of ISO, necrosis was 10% and 25%, respectively. To quantify the degree of hypertrophy we measured heart weight and myocyte volume, and calcula... To obtain quantitative information on changes in myocyte size in hearts with increased myocardial mass light microscopical morphometry was used in fixed and stained myocardial tissue sections. A modification of the azan staining procedure made longitudinal (sarcolemma) and transverse (intercalated discs) boundaries visible with a contrast that allowed morphometric analysis. The method was validated in left ventricular tissue of rats ranging in age from 4 to 17 weeks. Myocyte width, cut surface a... Abstract

Cardiovascular research, Volume 21, Issue 3, 1 1 1987, Pages 223-229 Relation between ventricular DNA content and number of myocytes and non-myocytes in hearts of normotensive and spontaneously hypertensive rats. van der Laarse A, Bloys van Treslong CH, Vliegen HW, Ricciardi L
Myocardial DNA concentration and ventricular weight were measured in the hearts of normal and spontaneously hypertensive rats varying in age from 1 day to 1 year and the ventricular DNA content calculated. A linear relation between ventricular DNA content and ventricular weight was observed in both rat strains. This linear relation was deduced theoretically, assuming that the number of ventricular non-myocytes per heart was proportional to ventricular weight and that the number of ventricular my... Abstract
Hormone research, Volume 27, Issue 4, 1 1 1987, Pages 195-199 Bromocriptine is unable to suppress TRH-stimulated beta-endorphin/beta-lipotropin and cortisol secretion in normal pregnant women after delivery. Lamberts SW, Angement R, van der Heijden A, Wladimiroff JW, Hackeng WH, de Jong FH
The course of plasma beta-endorphin/beta-lipotropin, cortisol and prolactin (PRL) levels was followed from 0.5 till 5 h after normal delivery in 13 healthy women. Six subjects who did not want to breast-feed their child received 2.5 mg bromocriptine orally 1 h after delivery. After 3 h the effect of the intravenous administration of 200 micrograms thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) was also measured. Elevated plasma beta-endorphin and cortisol levels decreased after delivery in a (log) linear f... Abstract

The purpose of the study was to investigate the possibilities of flow cytometry (FCM) for the analysis of DNA polyploidy in human heart tissue. Suspensions of single nuclei were prepared with the detergent-trypsin procedure and stained with propidium iodide. A mathematical correction procedure was developed to correct for background and clumping. For diploid model populations of chicken and trout red blood cells this correction reduced artifactual fractions in the FCM DNA profile to less than 0.... Abstract

Platelet transport theory is based on convection diffusion and describes adequately the influence of wall shear rate, platelet concentration and axial (down stream) position. Until now, the influence of the predominant factors affecting platelet adherence, the hematocrit and the red cell size, was not included in this theory. Their role remained hidden in the platelet diffusivity (Dw), which was assumed to be related to the shear rate (gamma) expressed in s-1 by a power law function Dw = m gamma... Abstract
