Nederlands tijdschrift voor geneeskunde, Volume 142, Issue 44, 1 1 1998, Pages 2385-2388 [Urinary tract infections in infants, an insidious clinical picture]. van Wijk JA, van der Heijden AJ
Three boys aged 4, 5 and 7 weeks drank poorly, vomited and were lethargic. There were metabolic disorders attributable to a urinary tract infection. Ultrasonography revealed anatomical anomalies. After antibiotic treatment and, if necessary, surgical correction, the patients recovered. Follow-up was uncomplicated except persisting polyuria in one of the patients. A urinary tract infection in young children is difficult to recognise because of the aspecific presenting symptoms. It can cause a sev... Abstract

Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Volume 32, Issue 3, 1 1 1998, Pages 816-826 Effects of critical coronary stenosis on global systolic left ventricular function quantified by pressure-volume relations during dobutamine stress in the canine heart. Steendijk P, Baan J, Van der Velde ET, Baan J
Objectives: In this study we quantified the effects of a critical coronary stenosis on global systolic function using pressure-volume relations at baseline and during incremental dobutamine stress. Background: The effects of coronary stenosis have previously been analyzed mainly in terms of regional (dys)function. Global hemodynamics are generally considered normal until coronary flow is substantially reduced. However, pressure-volume analysis might reveal mechanisms not fully exposed by potenti... Abstract

Developmental medicine and child neurology, Volume 40, Issue 8, 1 1 1998, Pages 563-567 Development of visual function in hemihydranencephaly. Porro G, Wittebol-Post D, de Graaf M, van Nieuwenhuizen O, Schenk-Rootlieb AJ, Treffers WF
This study reports on the findings of longitudinal follow-up of visual function in a 12-year-old girl affected by congenital right hemihydranencephaly. This extremely rare unilateral brain malformation allowed the authors to gather new information on neuronal plasticity and functional compensations of the visual system across a period of 10 years. An extension of the preserved right visual hemifields above the middle line and strategical eye or head positions developed to increase visual functio... Abstract

European journal of cancer (Oxford, England : 1990), Volume 34, Issue 8, 1 1 1998, Pages 1235-1241 Trends in treatment and long-term survival of thyroid cancer in southeastern Netherlands, 1960-1992. Kuijpens JL, Hansen B, Hamming JF, Ribot JG, Haak HR, Coebergh JW
Thyroid cancer (TC), comprising less than 1% of all cancers in the Netherlands, has a good prognosis in general. Controversy still remains on the extent of surgical treatment and the indication for additional Iodine-131 (131I) therapy in the management of differentiated TC. The aim of this study was to describe (changes in) the treatment of TC and to determine independent prognostic factors for crude and relative survival of differentiated TC diagnosed in general hospitals. This population-based... Abstract

Pediatric research, Volume 44, Issue 1, 1 1 1998, Pages 119-124 The effect of antioxidative combination therapy on post hypoxic-ischemic perfusion, metabolism, and electrical activity of the newborn brain. Shadid M, Moison R, Steendijk P, Hiltermann L, Berger HM, van Bel F
Reoxygenation and reperfusion after severe hypoxia and ischemia (HI) contribute substantially to birth asphyxia-related brain injury. Excess production of free radicals via metabolization of arachidonic acid, xanthine oxidase, and non-protein-bound iron play an important role. Cerebral reperfusion injury is characterized by a decrease in perfusion, oxygen consumption, and electrical activity of the brain. Reduction of free radical production may attenuate these features. We therefore induced sev... Abstract

World journal of surgery, Volume 22, Issue 6, 1 1 1998, Pages 575-9; discussion 579-80 Role of fine-needle aspiration biopsy and frozen section examination in determining the extent of thyroidectomy. Hamming JF, Vriens MR, Goslings BM, Songun I, Fleuren GJ, van de Velde CJ
Traditionally the extent of thyroidectomy in patients with nodular thyroid disease has been based on peroperative frozen section examination (FS). Fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) and FS were evaluated with regard to the reliability to determine whether an operation for cancer is necessary. Both methods were performed in 240 patients operated for nodular thyroid disease and compared with the final histology on paraffin sections. Altogether 72 (30%) patients were found to have a malignant les... Abstract

Clinical and experimental immunology, Volume 112, Issue 2, 1 1 1998, Pages 216-225 CD4+ T cells from 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS)-induced colitis rodents migrate to the recipient's colon upon transfer; down-regulation by CD8+ T cells. Palmen MJ, Wijburg OL, Kunst IH, Kroes H, van Rees EP
CD4+ T cells play an important role in the aetiology of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), but it is not clear which factor(s) cause activation of these cells. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of adoptive transfer of splenic (CD4+) T cells from TNBS/ethanol-sensitized donor rats to naive recipients and the migration pattern of transferred T cells. For the transfer experiments, colitis was induced in rats by colonic administration of TNBS/ethanol. Seventeen days later, either total... Abstract

Mutation research, Volume 400, Issue 1-2, 1 1 1998, Pages 153-167 DNA signals for G2 checkpoint response in diploid human fibroblasts. Kaufmann WK, Kies PE
DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) signals that induce the G2 checkpoint response were examined using proliferative secondary cultures of diploid human fibroblasts. Treatments that generated DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) directly were effective inducers of checkpoint response, generally producing >80% inhibition of mitosis (G2 delay) and the kinase activity of M-phase-promoting factor within 2 h of treatment. Effective inducers of G2 checkpoint response included gamma-irradiation and the cancer ch... Abstract

Arteriosclerosis, thrombosis, and vascular biology, Volume 18, Issue 5, 1 1 1998, Pages 693-701 Binding of human urokinase-type plasminogen activator to its receptor: residues involved in species specificity and binding. Quax PH, Grimbergen JM, Lansink M, Bakker AH, Blatter MC, Belin D, van Hinsbergh VW, Verheijen JH
Urokinase-type plasminogen activator (UPA), particularly when bound to its receptor (UPAR), is thought to play a major role in local proteolytic processes, thus facilitating cell migration as may occur during angiogenesis, neointima and atherosclerotic plaque formation, and tumor cell invasion. To facilitate understanding of the need and function of the UPA/UPAR interaction in cell migration and vascular remodeling, we changed several amino acid residues in UPA so as to interfere with its intera...
