Deelen J, Kettunen J, Fischer K, van der Spek A, Trompet S, Kastenmüller G, Boyd A, Zierer J, van den Akker EB, Ala-Korpela M, Amin N, Demirkan A, Ghanbari M, van Heemst D, Ikram MA, van Klinken JB, Mooijaart SP, Peters A, Salomaa V, Sattar N, Spector TD, Tiemeier H, Verhoeven A, Waldenberger M, Würtz P, Davey Smith G, Metspalu A, Perola M, Menni C, Geleijnse JM, Drenos F, Beekman M, Jukema JW, van Duijn CM, Slagboom PE
Predicting longer-term mortality risk requires collection of clinical data, which is often cumbersome. Therefore, we use a well-standardized metabolomics platform to identify metabolic predictors of long-term mortality in the circulation of 44,168 individuals (age at baseline 18-109), of whom 5512 died during follow-up. We apply a stepwise (forward-backward) procedure based on meta-analysis results and identify 14 circulating biomarkers independently associating with all-cause mortality. Overall... Abstract

Neurobiology of aging, Volume 84, 9 2 2019, Pages 236.e17-236.e28 Repeat variations in polyglutamine disease-associated genes and cognitive function in old age. Gardiner SL, Trompet S, Sabayan B, Boogaard MW, Jukema JW, Slagboom PE, Roos RAC, van der Grond J, Aziz NA
Although the heritability of cognitive function in old age is substantial, genome-wide association studies have had limited success in elucidating its genetic basis, leaving a considerable amount of "missing heritability." Aside from single nucleotide polymorphisms, genome-wide association studies are unable to assess other large sources of genetic variation, such as tandem repeat polymorphisms. Therefore, here, we studied the association of cytosine-adenine-guanine (CAG) repeat variat... Abstract

Frontiers in cardiovascular medicine, Volume 6, 8 2 2019, Pages 113 miRMap: Profiling 14q32 microRNA Expression and DNA Methylation Throughout the Human Vasculature. Goossens EAC, de Vries MR, Simons KH, Putter H, Quax PHA, Nossent AY
Aims: MicroRNAs are regulators of (patho)physiological functions with tissue-specific expression patterns. However, little is known about inter-vascular differences in microRNA expression between blood vessel types or vascular beds. Differences in microRNA expression could influence cardiovascular pathophysiology at specific sites in the vasculature. Therefore, we aimed to map expression profiles of vasoactive 14q32 microRNAs throughout the human vasculature, as well as expression of vasoactive... Abstract

The triple oxygen isotope signature Δ17O in atmospheric CO2, also known as its "17O excess," has been proposed as a tracer for gross primary production (the gross uptake of CO2 by vegetation through photosynthesis). We present the first global 3-D model simulations for Δ17O in atmospheric CO2 together with a detailed model description and sensitivity analyses. In our 3-D model framework we include the stratospheric source of Δ17O in CO2 and the surface sinks from vegetation, soils, oce... Abstract

Background: Even though implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) implantation for primary prevention has shown to reduce the risk of sudden cardiac death in chronic heart failure patients with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), a significant portion of these patients will never receive appropriate ICD therapy. We aimed to functionally characterize the arrhythmogenic substrate using left ventricular (LV) global longitudinal strain (GLS) and heart-to-mediastinum (H/M) ratio on... Abstract
Der Urologe. Ausg. A, Volume 58, Issue 8, 1 1 2019, Pages 858-863 [The affiliated physician in Germany: the end of a cross-sector form of care?] Schneider AW
In the classic affiliated physician system, patients are typically guaranteed cross-sectoral surgical and nonsurgical care. For years, neutral experts have been confirming the resource-efficient use of the increasing demand for medical services due to changing demographics. Nevertheless, due to lack of support, this form of care is increasingly being replaced by structures that substitute affiliated physicians. Only by returning to this cross-sectoral form of care, which was a leading form of ca... Abstract
