European heart journal. Cardiovascular Imaging, Volume 23, Issue 10, 1 1 2022, Pages 1326-1335 Left ventricular remodelling patterns in patients with moderate aortic stenosis. Stassen J, Ewe SH, Hirasawa K, Butcher SC, Singh GK, Amanullah MR, Sin KYK, Ding ZP, Pio SM, Chew NWS, Sia CH, Kong WKF, Poh KK, Cohen DJ, Généreux P, Leon MB, Marsan NA, Delgado V, Bax JJ
Aims: Moderate aortic stenosis (AS) is associated with an increased risk of adverse events. Because outcomes in patients with AS are ultimately driven by the condition of the left ventricle (LV) and not by the valve, assessment of LV remodelling seems important for risk stratification. This study evaluated the association between different LV remodelling patterns and outcomes in patients with moderate AS. Methods and results: Patients with moderate AS (aortic valve area 1.0-1.5 cm2) were identif... Abstract

Europace : European pacing, arrhythmias, and cardiac electrophysiology : journal of the working groups on cardiac pacing, arrhythmias, and cardiac cellular electrophysiology of the European Society of Cardiology, Volume 24, Issue 8, 1 1 2022, Pages 1223-1228 Association between left atrial epicardial fat, left atrial volume, and the severity of atrial fibrillation. van Rosendael AR, Smit JM, El'Mahdiui M, van Rosendael PJ, Leung M, Delgado V, Bax JJ
Aims: Left atrial (LA) volume and LA epicardial fat are both substrates for atrial fibrillation (AF), but may relate with AF at different (early vs. late) stages in the AF disease process. We evaluated associations between LA epicardial fat and LA volume in patients with sinus rhythm (SR), paroxysmal AF (PAF), and persistent/permanent AF. Methods and results: In total, 300 patients (100 with SR, 100 with PAF, and 100 with persistent/permanent AF) who underwent cardiac computed tomography angiogr... Abstract

The QT interval is an electrocardiographic measure representing the sum of ventricular depolarization and repolarization, estimated by QRS duration and JT interval, respectively. QT interval abnormalities are associated with potentially fatal ventricular arrhythmia. Using genome-wide multi-ancestry analyses (>250,000 individuals) we identify 177, 156 and 121 independent loci for QT, JT and QRS, respectively, including a male-specific X-chromosome locus. Using gene-based rare-variant methods,... Abstract

Sleep, Volume 45, Issue 9, 1 1 2022, Pages zsac139 Sleep spindle dynamics suggest over-consolidation in post-traumatic stress disorder. van der Heijden AC, Hofman WF, de Boer M, Nijdam MJ, van Marle HJF, Jongedijk RA, Olff M, Talamini LM
Devastating and persisting traumatic memories are a central symptom of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Sleep problems are highly co-occurrent with PTSD and intertwined with its etiology. Notably, sleep hosts memory consolidation processes, supported by sleep spindles (11-16 Hz). Here we assess the hypothesis that intrusive memory symptoms in PTSD may arise from excessive memory consolidation, reflected in exaggerated spindling. We use a newly developed spindle detection method, entailing... Abstract

Singh GK, Vollema EM, Stassen J, van Rosendael A, Gegenava T, van der Kley F, Knuuti J, Marsan NA, Delgado V, Bax JJ
Several studies have shown an association between aortic stenosis (AS) and coronary atherosclerosis. This study aimed to evaluate the gender differences in aortic valve calcium (AVC) and coronary artery calcium (CAC) and the association between CAC and all-cause mortality in patients with severe AS. A total of 260 patients (80 ± 7 years, 39% men) with severe AS who were scheduled for transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) were included. AVC and CAC before TAVI were assessed by noncontras... Abstract

Background: Statin therapy is effective for the prevention of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and is widely prescribed, but there are persisting concerns that statin therapy might frequently cause muscle pain or weakness. We aimed to address these through an individual participant data meta-analysis of all recorded adverse muscle events in large, long-term, randomised, double-blind trials of statin therapy. Methods: Randomised trials of statin therapy were eligible if they aimed to recrui... Abstract

Ortí-Casañ N, Zuhorn IS, Naudé PJW, De Deyn PP, van Schaik PEM, Wajant H, Eisel ULM
Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) is a pleiotropic, proinflammatory cytokine related to different neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease (AD). Although the linkage between increased TNF-α levels and AD is widely recognized, TNF-α-neutralizing therapies have failed to treat AD. Previous research has associated this with the antithetic functions of the two TNF receptors, TNF receptor 1, associated with inflammation and apoptosis, and TNF receptor 2 (TNFR2), associated with ne... Food and chemical toxicology : an international journal published for the British Industrial Biological Research Association, Volume 168, 29 5 2022, Pages 113393 The role of diet in genotoxicity of fecal water derived from IBD patients and healthy controls. Wang S, Godschalk R, Spooren C, de Graaf M, Jonkers D, van Schooten FJ
Certain dietary factors with anti-inflammatory and/or anti-cancer properties would be a promising preventive strategy for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients against developing colitis-associated colorectal cancer (CAC). In this study, fecal water (FW) was obtained from 80 IBD patients and 20 healthy controls (HCs). The comet assay was applied to determine the DNA damage induced by FW, and the protective potential of FW against hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) induced DNA damage in Caco-2 cells. I... Abstract

Introduction: Application of the chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) rule out criteria (manual electrocardiogram [ECG] reading and N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide [NTproBNP] test) can rule out CTEPH in pulmonary embolism (PE) patients with persistent dyspnea (InShape II algorithm). Increased pulmonary pressure may also be identified using automated ECG-derived ventricular gradient optimized for right ventricular pressure overload (VG-RVPO). Method: A predefined analysi... Koene S, Klerx-Melis F, Roest AAW, Kleijwegt MC, Bootsma M, Haak MC, van Haeringen MH, Ruivenkamp CAL, Nibbeling EAR, van Haeringen A
Haplo-insufficiency of the TGFβ-activated kinase 1 binding protein 2 (TAB2) gene is associated with short stature, facial dysmorphisms, connective tissue abnormalities, hearing loss, and cardiac disease. Skeletal dysplasia and sacral dimples are also found in a minority of patients. Here, we describe a 3-generation family with caudal appendage, other sacral anomalies, and skeletal abnormalities including hypoplasia of the iliac wings and scapulae, fusion of the carpal bones and stenosis of the s...
