Thrombosis and haemostasis, Volume 98, Issue 6, 1 1 2007, Pages 1323-1328 The influence of established genetic variation in the haemostatic system on clinical restenosis after percutaneous coronary interventions. Pons D, Monraats PS, de Maat MP, Pires NM, Quax PH, van Vlijmen BJ, Rosendaal FR, Zwinderman AH, Doevendans PA, Waltenberger J, de Winter RJ, Tio RA, Frants RR, van der Laarse A, van der Wall EE, Jukema JW
Since activation of the haemostatic system is an important feature of the wound healing response triggered by arterial injury, variations in genes involved in thrombus formation may play a role in restenosis after percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI). Therefore, our aim was to examine the relationship between polymorphisms that are known to play a role in the haemostatic system and the risk of clinical restenosis in the GENetic DEterminants of Restenosis (GENDER) study, a multicenter prospe... The American journal of cardiology, Volume 101, Issue 1, 26 4 2007, Pages 40-45 Anatomic correlates of a normal perfusion scan using 64-slice computed tomographic coronary angiography. van Werkhoven JM, Schuijf JD, Jukema JW, Kroft LJ, Stokkel MP, Dibbets-Schneider P, Pundziute G, Scholte AJ, van der Wall EE, Bax JJ
Both myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) and multislice computed tomography (MSCT) are currently used to detect coronary artery disease (CAD). However, MSCT permits early detection of atherosclerosis while myocardial perfusion is still normal. In addition, MPI results can be normal despite the presence of high-risk CAD (left main and balanced 3-vessel CAD). In this study, the range of anatomic findings using MSCT in patients with normal MPI results was evaluated. In 180 patients presenting with c... Abstract

Circulation research, Volume 102, Issue 2, 15 3 2007, Pages 257-264 Toll-like receptor 4 mediates maladaptive left ventricular remodeling and impairs cardiac function after myocardial infarction. Timmers L, Sluijter JP, van Keulen JK, Hoefer IE, Nederhoff MG, Goumans MJ, Doevendans PA, van Echteld CJ, Joles JA, Quax PH, Piek JJ, Pasterkamp G, de Kleijn DP
Left ventricular (LV) remodeling leads to congestive heart failure and is a main determinant of morbidity and mortality following myocardial infarction. Therapeutic options to prevent LV remodeling are limited, which necessitates the exploration of alternative therapeutic targets. Toll-like receptors (TLRs) serve as pattern recognition receptors within the innate immune system. Activation of TLR4 results in an inflammatory response and is involved in extracellular matrix degradation, both key pr... Abstract

Bioorganic & medicinal chemistry letters, Volume 18, Issue 1, 1 1 2007, Pages 188-193 7-Azaindole derivatives as potential partial nicotinic agonists. Stoit AR, den Hartog AP, Mons H, van Schaik S, Barkhuijsen N, Stroomer C, Coolen HK, Reinders JH, Adolfs TJ, van der Neut M, Keizer H, Kruse CG
We have investigated a series of 7-azaindoles as potential partial agonists of the alpha4beta2 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR). Three series of 7-azaindole derivatives have been synthesized and evaluated for rat brain neuronal nicotinic receptor affinity and functional activity. Compound (+)-51 exhibited the most potent nAChR binding (Ki = 10 nM). Compound 30A demonstrated both moderate binding affinity and partial agonist potency, thus representing a promising lead for the indications... Abstract

Journal of the American Society of Echocardiography : official publication of the American Society of Echocardiography, Volume 21, Issue 5, 1 1 2007, Pages 512.e5-7 Iatrogenic perforation of the posterior mitral valve leaflet: a rare complication of pacemaker lead placement. Konings TC, Koolbergen DR, Bouma BJ, Groenink M, Mulder BJ
An inadvertently placed pacing lead in the left ventricle (LV) is a rare and often underdiagnosed complication of pacemaker implantation. We present a case of a 73-year-old woman who was evaluated for dyspnea, 10 years after transvenous pacemaker implantation. Transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography revealed a secundum atrial septal defect through which the ventricular pacing lead was placed into the LV. Whereas percutaneous extraction of the lead seemed too full of risk, the patient... Abstract

Annals of vascular surgery, Volume 21, Issue 6, 1 1 2007, Pages 780-789 Glycemic control, lipid-lowering treatment, and prognosis in diabetic patients with peripheral atherosclerotic disease. Feringa HH, Karagiannis SE, Vidakovic R, Elhendy A, Schouten O, Boersma E, Bax JJ, Poldermans D
Glycemic control may be an underestimated risk factor in diabetic patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Chronic statin therapy may improve glycemic control and outcome in these patients. In an observational cohort study of 425 consecutive diabetic patients with PAD, chronic statin therapy was noted, the ankle-brachial index was measured, and serial glycemic hemoglobin (HbA(1c)) measurements were obtained. During follow-up (median 7 years), all-cause mortality and cardiac death occurre... Abstract

Stem cell research, Volume 1, Issue 2, 1 1 2007, Pages 129-137 Reduction of myocardial infarct size by human mesenchymal stem cell conditioned medium. Timmers L, Lim SK, Arslan F, Armstrong JS, Hoefer IE, Doevendans PA, Piek JJ, El Oakley RM, Choo A, Lee CN, Pasterkamp G, de Kleijn DP
Although paracrine effects of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been suggested previously, cardioprotection by human MSC secretions has never been demonstrated. Human MSC-conditioned medium (CM) was collected by following a clinically compliant protocol. In a porcine model of ischemia and reperfusion injury, intravenous and intracoronary MSC-CM treatment significantly reduced myocardial nuclear oxidative stress as determined by immunostaining for 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine. In addition, e... Abstract
