Lardenoye JH, de Vries MR, Deckers M, van Lent N, Hanemaaijer R, van Bockel JH, Quax PH
Aims: Intimal hyperplasia, characterised by smooth muscle cell migration and proliferation, requires extracellular matrix degradation which is mediated by matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). In this study, the effect of tetracycline derived doxycycline, a specific MMP inhibitor of both activity and synthesis, on intimal hyperplasia in vitro and in vivo was assessed. Methods and results: Segments of human saphenous veins were cultured for 4 weeks in absence or presence of doxycycline (10microg/ml)... Abstract

Human molecular genetics, Volume 14, Issue 18, 27 4 2005, Pages 2607-2618 Functional interaction between -629C/A, -971G/A and -1337C/T polymorphisms in the CETP gene is a major determinant of promoter activity and plasma CETP concentration in the REGRESS Study. Frisdal E, Klerkx AH, Le Goff W, Tanck MW, Lagarde JP, Jukema JW, Kastelein JJ, Chapman MJ, Guerin M
Cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) plays a key role in the determination of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels via its action on intravascular HDL metabolism. The TaqIB polymorphism of the CETP gene is associated with plasma CETP and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels and with premature coronary artery disease. Such associations appear to result from linkage disequilibrium between TaqIB and other functional polymorphisms. To date, only one functional promoter variant,... Abstract

The Journal of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery, Volume 130, Issue 1, 1 1 2005, Pages 33-40 Acute hemodynamic effects of restrictive mitral annuloplasty in patients with end-stage heart failure: analysis by pressure-volume relations. Tulner SA, Steendijk P, Klautz RJ, Bax JJ, Versteegh MI, van der Wall EE, Dion RA
Objective: Recent studies show beneficial long-term effects of restrictive mitral annuloplasty in patients with end-stage heart failure. However, concerns are raised about possible adverse effects on early postoperative systolic and diastolic function, which might limit application of this approach in patients with heart failure. Therefore we evaluated the acute effects of restrictive mitral annuloplasty on left ventricular function by using load-independent pressure-volume relations. Methods: I... Abstract

The American journal of cardiology, Volume 96, Issue 1, 1 1 2005, Pages 22-24 Effect of intracoronary aqueous oxygen on left ventricular remodeling after anterior wall ST-elevation acute myocardial infarction. Warda HM, Bax JJ, Bosch JG, Atsma DE, Jukema JW, van der Wall EE, van der Laarse A, Schalij MJ, Oemrawsingh PV
The present report describes outcomes of randomized selective intracoronary aqueous oxygen versus standard care in patients who had acute anterior wall myocardial infarction within 6 hours of onset (n = 50). Left ventricular (LV) dimensions and function were assessed by contrast echocardiography at baseline and 1 month. It is demonstrated that aqueous oxygen prevents LV remodeling and preserves LV ejection fraction. Abstract

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, Volume 118, Issue 1, 1 1 2005, Pages 353-363 The role of high frequencies in speech localization. Best V, Carlile S, Jin C, van Schaik A
This study measured the accuracy with which human listeners can localize spoken words. A broadband (300 Hz-16 kHz) corpus of monosyllabic words was created and presented tolisteners using a virtual auditory environment. Localization was examined for 76 locations ona sphere surrounding the listener. Experiment 1 showed that low-pass filtering the speech sounds at 8 kHz degraded performance, causing an increase in polar angle errors associated with the cone of confusion. In experiment 2 it was fou... Abstract

Haemophilia : the official journal of the World Federation of Hemophilia, Volume 11, Issue 4, 1 1 2005, Pages 366-370 The effect of clotting factor concentrates on the immune system in HIV-negative haemophilics. Balkan C, Kavakli K, Kutukculer N, Aksu G, Yilmaz D, Aydinok Y
Immune abnormalities have been reported in patients with haemophilia. Although infections with HIV and hepatitis viruses contribute to these abnormalities, chronic exposure to extraneous proteins in clotting factor concentrates (CFC) may also play a role. A number of studies suggest that the degree of immunological abnormalities correlates with the amount of intermediate purity CFC administered over time. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether there were cellular and humoral immuno... Abstract

Future cardiology, Volume 1, Issue 4, 1 1 2005, Pages 479-488 The role of insulin-like growth factor during a postischemic period - new insights into pathophysiologic pathways in cardiac tissue. Palmen M, Twickler MT, Daemen MJ, Cramer MJ, Doevendans PA
Despite an improvement in the therapeutic strategies available for an acute ischemic event, cardiac disease is still the principal cause of morbidity and mortality in Western societies. A shift from acute towards more chronic heart disease due to atherosclerotic disease has been recognized. Modification of adaptive capacities of the cardiac muscle after damage remains a key component in the prevention of chronic cardiac disease, such as overt heart failure. It has recently been demonstrated that... Abstract

The Journal of clinical endocrinology and metabolism, Volume 90, Issue 9, 28 4 2005, Pages 5313-5316 A common polymorphism in the CYP3A7 gene is associated with a nearly 50% reduction in serum dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate levels. Smit P, van Schaik RH, van der Werf M, van den Beld AW, Koper JW, Lindemans J, Pols HA, Brinkmann AO, de Jong FH, Lamberts SW
Context: CYP3A7, expressed in the human fetal liver and normally silenced after birth, plays a major role in the 16alpha-hydroxylation of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), DHEA sulfate (DHEAS), and estrone. Due to a replacement of part of the CYP3A7 promoter with a sequence identical with the same region in the CYP3A4 promoter (referred to as CYP3A7*1C), some individuals still express a variant of the CYP3A7 gene later in life. Objective: The objective of this study was to examine the effect of the... Abstract
