Journal of applied clinical medical physics, Volume 17, Issue 2, 8 2 2016, Pages 291-303 Diamond detector in absorbed dose measurements in high-energy linear accelerator photon and electron beams. Ravichandran R, Binukumar JP, Al Amri I, Davis CA
Diamond detectors (DD) are preferred in small field dosimetry of radiation beams because of small dose profile penumbras, better spatial resolution, and tissue-equivalent properties. We investigated a commercially available 'microdiamond' detector in realizing absorbed dose from first principles. A microdiamond detector, type TM 60019 with tandem electrometer is used to measure absorbed doses in water, nylon, and PMMA phantoms. With sensitive volume 0.004 mm3, radius 1.1mm, thickness 1... Frontiers in psychology, Volume 7, 8 2 2016, Pages 321 Young Children's Motor Interference Is Influenced by Novel Group Membership. van Schaik JE, Endedijk HM, Stapel JC, Hunnius S
From early childhood onward, individuals use behavior copying to communicate liking and belonging. This non-verbal signal of affiliation is especially relevant in the context of social groups and indeed both children and adults copy in-group more than out-group members. Given the societal importance of inter-group interactions, it is imperative to understand the mechanistic level at which group modulations of copying occur early in development. The current study was designed to investigate the e... Abstract

Background: Data are limited on genome-wide association studies (GWAS) for incident coronary heart disease (CHD). Moreover, it is not known whether genetic variants identified to date also associate with risk of CHD in a prospective setting. Methods: We performed a two-stage GWAS analysis of incident myocardial infarction (MI) and CHD in a total of 64,297 individuals (including 3898 MI cases, 5465 CHD cases). SNPs that passed an arbitrary threshold of 5×10-6 in Stage I were taken to Stage II for... Abstract

The autologous arteriovenous fistula (AVF) for hemodialysis burdens the cardiovascular system with increased cardiac output and pulmonary artery pressure, increasing cardiovascular risk. This article reviews literature on the benefits and drawbacks of a functioning AVF after kidney transplantation and discusses the cardiovascular effects of AVF closure. Several cohort studies demonstrate a significant cardiac burden of an AVF and improvement of cardiac dimensions after AVF ligation. However, no... Abstract

Groot AE, van Schaik IN, Visser MC, Nederkoorn PJ, Limburg M, Aramideh M, de Beer F, Zwetsloot CP, Halkes P, de Kruijk J, Kruyt ND, van der Meulen W, Spaander F, van der Ree T, Kwa VI, Van den Berg-Vos RM, Roos YB, Coutinho JM
Centralization of intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) for acute ischemic stroke in high-volume centers is believed to improve the door-to-needle times (DNT), but limited data support this assumption. We examined the association between DNT and IVT volume in a large Dutch province. We identified consecutive patients treated with IVT between January 2009 and 2013. Based on annualized IVT volume, hospitals were categorized as low-volume (≤ 24), medium-volume (25-49) or high-volume (≥ 50). In logistic re... Abstract

Philosophical transactions of the Royal Society of London. Series B, Biological sciences, Volume 371, Issue 1690, 1 1 2016, Pages 20150183 The reluctant innovator: orangutans and the phylogeny of creativity. van Schaik CP, Burkart J, Damerius L, Forss SI, Koops K, van Noordwijk MA, Schuppli C
Young orangutans are highly neophobic, avoid independent exploration and show a preference for social learning. Accordingly, they acquire virtually all their learned skills through exploration that is socially induced. Adult exploration rates are also low. Comparisons strongly suggest that major innovations, i.e. behaviours that have originally been brought into the population through individual invention, are made where ecological opportunities to do so are propitious. Most populations nonethel... Abstract
The Journal of craniofacial surgery, Volume 27, Issue 2, 1 1 2016, Pages e175-6 Atypical Carcinoid Tumor and Chondroid and Glandular Hamartoma of the Arythenoid Region. Sarioglu S, Akturk G, Aslier NG, Yilmaz DB, Dogan E
Neuroendocrine tumors of the head and neck are rare. Laryngeal hamartomas are even rarer especially in adult patients. Here in a 69-year-old male patient is presented who had atypical carcinoid tumor and chondroid and glandular hamartoma of the medial mucosa of the left arythenoid. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case presenting the association of these 2 rare lesions. Abstract

Scavenger receptor BI (SR-BI) is the major receptor for high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (HDL-C). In humans, high amounts of HDL-C in plasma are associated with a lower risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). Mice that have depleted Scarb1 (SR-BI knockout mice) have markedly elevated HDL-C levels but, paradoxically, increased atherosclerosis. The impact of SR-BI on HDL metabolism and CHD risk in humans remains unclear. Through targeted sequencing of coding regions of lipid-modifying gene... Abstract

Journal of atrial fibrillation, Volume 8, Issue 5, 29 5 2016, Pages 1362 Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy in Non-Ischemic Cardiomyopathy. Shanks M, Delgado V, Bax JJ
Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) is an established therapy for heart failure patients who remain symptomatic despite optimal medical therapy, have reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (120 ms), preferably with left bundle branch block morphology. The response to CRT depends on the cardiac substrate: presence of correctable left ventricular mechanical dyssynchrony, presence of myocardial fibrosis (scar) and position of the left ventricular pacing lead. Patients with non-ischemic card... Abstract

Patients expressing the cytochrome P450 (CYP) 3A5 gene require a higher tacrolimus dose to achieve therapeutic exposure compared with nonexpressers. This randomized-controlled study investigated whether adaptation of the tacrolimus starting dose according to CYP3A5 genotype increases the proportion of kidney transplant recipients being within the target tacrolimus predose concentration range (10-15 ng/mL) at first steady-state. Two hundred forty living-donor, renal transplant recipients were ass... Abstract
