Journal of endovascular therapy : an official journal of the International Society of Endovascular Specialists, Volume 31, Issue 6, 16 3 2023, Pages 1107-1120 Identifying Patients at High Risk for Post-EVAR Aneurysm Sac Growth. Bruijn LE, Louhichi J, Veger HTC, Wever JJ, van Dijk LC, van Overhagen H, Hamming JF, Statius van Eps RGS
Purpose: Post-EVAR (endovascular aneurysm repair) aneurysm sac growth can be seen as therapy failure as it is a risk factor for post-EVAR aneurysm rupture. This study sought to identify preoperative patient predictors for developing post-EVAR aneurysm sac growth. Material and methods: A systematic review was conducted to select potential predictive preoperative factors for post-EVAR sac growth (including a total of 34.886 patients), which were evaluated by a retrospective single-center analysis... The 3-dimensional spatial and 2-dimensional frontal QRS-T angles are measures derived from the vectorcardiogram. They are independent risk predictors for arrhythmia, but the underlying biology is unknown. Using multi-ancestry genome-wide association studies we identify 61 (58 previously unreported) loci for the spatial QRS-T angle (N = 118,780) and 11 for the frontal QRS-T angle (N = 159,715). Seven out of the 61 spatial QRS-T angle loci have not been reported for other electrocardiographic meas... Abstract

Biomedicines, Volume 11, Issue 3, 13 2 2023, Pages 867 Natriuretic Peptide Levels and Stages of Left Ventricular Dysfunction in Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction. Dal Canto E, Scheffer M, Kortekaas K, Driessen-Waaijer A, Paulus WJ, van Heerebeek L
In heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), natriuretic peptide (NP) levels are frequently lower. In several trials, the outcome differed between patients with low and high NP levels. This suggests that NP could be used to identify distinct stages of left ventricular (LV) remodeling and myocardial tissue composition. This study investigated cardiac remodeling/dysfunction and myocardial tissue characteristics assessed by echocardiography and cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) in HFpE... Abstract

Journal of cardiovascular computed tomography, Volume 17, Issue 3, 13 2 2023, Pages 177-184 Plaque volume, composition, and fraction versus ischemia and outcomes in patients with coronary artery disease. Kuneman JH, van den Hoogen IJ, Schultz J, Maaniitty T, van Rosendael AR, Kamperidis V, de Graaf MA, Broersen A, Jukema JW, Bax JJ, Saraste A, Knuuti J
Background: The various plaque components have been associated with ischemia and outcomes in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). The main goal of this analysis was to test the hypothesis that, at patient level, the fraction of non-calcified plaque volume (PV) of total PV is associated with ischemia and outcomes in patients with CAD. This ratio could be a simple and clinically useful parameter, if predicting outcomes. Methods: Consecutive patients with suspected CAD undergoing coronary c... Abstract

Lung-function impairment underlies chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and predicts mortality. In the largest multi-ancestry genome-wide association meta-analysis of lung function to date, comprising 580,869 participants, we identified 1,020 independent association signals implicating 559 genes supported by ≥2 criteria from a systematic variant-to-gene mapping framework. These genes were enriched in 29 pathways. Individual variants showed heterogeneity across ancestries, age and smoking... Abstract

Nature reviews. Clinical oncology, Volume 20, Issue 5, 13 2 2023, Pages 287-304 Global trends in the epidemiology of bladder cancer: challenges for public health and clinical practice. van Hoogstraten LMC, Vrieling A, van der Heijden AG, Kogevinas M, Richters A, Kiemeney LA
Bladder cancer is among the ten most common cancers globally, causes considerable morbidity and mortality and is, therefore, a substantial burden for health-care systems. The incidence of bladder cancer is affected by demographic trends, most notably population growth and ageing, as well as exposure to risk factors, especially tobacco smoking. Consequently, the incidence has not been stable throughout the world over time, nor will it be in the near future. Further primary prevention efforts are... Abstract

European journal of heart failure, Volume 25, Issue 4, 10 2 2023, Pages 457-468 Inotropic therapy in patients with advanced heart failure. A clinical consensus statement from the Heart Failure Association of the European Society of Cardiology. Gustafsson F, Damman K, Nalbantgil S, Van Laake LW, Tops LF, Thum T, Adamopoulos S, Bonios M, Coats AJ, Crespo-Leiro MG, Mehra MR, Filippatos G, Hill L, Metra M, Jankowska E, de Jonge N, Kaye D, Masetti M, Parissis J, Milicic D, Seferovic P, Rosano G, Ben Gal T
This clinical consensus statement reviews the use of inotropic support in patients with advanced heart failure. The current guidelines only support use of inotropes in the setting of acute decompensated heart failure with evidence of organ malperfusion or shock. However, inotropic support may be reasonable in other patients with advanced heart failure without acute severe decompensation. The clinical evidence supporting use of inotropes in these situations is reviewed. Particularly, patients wit... Abstract

Objective: Hypothalamic dysfunction may result in morbid obesity as a consequence of decreased energy expenditure, decreased feelings of satiety, and increased fat storage. In patients with hypothalamic dysfunction, neurobehavioral dysfunction is also often present. Currently, no effective treatment has been found for hypothalamic obesity (HO). We hypothesize that deep brain stimulation (DBS) may be an effective treatment for patients with hypothalamic dysfunction, aiming to treat HO as well as... Abstract

Head and neck cancers are malignant growths with high death rates, which makes the early diagnosis of the affected patients of utmost importance. Over 90% of oral cavity cancers come from squamous cells, and the tongue, oral cavity, and salivary glands are the most common locations for oral squamous cell carcinoma lesions. Human β-defensins (hBDs), which are mainly produced by epithelial cells, are cationic peptides with a wide antimicrobial spectrum. In addition to their role in antimicrobial d... Abstract

Introduction: Radical cystectomy (RC) is the standard treatment for patients with non-metastatic muscle-invasive bladder cancer, as well as for patients with therapy refractory high-risk non-muscle invasive bladder cancer. However, 50-65% of patients undergoing RC experience perioperative complications. The risk, severity and impact of these complications is associated with a patient's preoperative cardiorespiratory fitness, nutritional and smoking status and presence of anxiety and depress... Background: Proteinuria is associated with many glomerular diseases and a risk factor for the progression to renal failure. We previously showed that heparanase (HPSE) is essential for the development of proteinuria, whereas peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor ɣ (PPARɣ) agonists can ameliorate proteinuria. Since a recent study showed that PPARɣ regulates HPSE expression in liver cancer cells, we hypothesized that PPARɣ agonists exert their reno-protective effect by inhibiting glomerular H... Abstract
