Clinical pharmacology and therapeutics, Volume 86, Issue 3, 3 1 2009, Pages 319-327 UGT1A9 -275T>A/-2152C>T polymorphisms correlate with low MPA exposure and acute rejection in MMF/tacrolimus-treated kidney transplant patients. van Schaik RH, van Agteren M, de Fijter JW, Hartmann A, Schmidt J, Budde K, Kuypers D, Le Meur Y, van der Werf M, Mamelok R, van Gelder T
Mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) is an immunosuppressive drug commonly used in the context of kidney transplantation. Exposure to the active metabolite mycophenolic acid (MPA) is associated with risk of allograft rejection. MPA pharmacokinetics varies between individuals, the potential cause being the presence of genetic polymorphisms in key enzymes. We genotyped 338 kidney transplant patients for UGT1A8, UGT1A9, UGT2B7, and MRP2 polymorphisms and recorded MPA exposure and biopsy-proven acute rejecti... Abstract

Objective: This study evaluated the effectiveness and safety of beta-blockers and statins for the prevention of perioperative cardiovascular events in intermediate-risk patients undergoing noncardiovascular surgery. Summary background data: Beta-blockers and statins reduce perioperative cardiac events in high-risk patients undergoing vascular surgery by restoring the myocardial oxygen supply/demand balance and/or stabilizing coronary plaques. However, their effects in intermediate-risk patients... Abstract
Current problems in cardiology, Volume 34, Issue 6, 1 1 2009, Pages 277-295 Classic images: Cardiac computed tomography. Schuijf JD, Kroft LJ, de Roos A, Bax JJ
Cardiac computed tomography (CT) has evolved into a valuable clinical tool for cardiac evaluation. Cardiac CT is increasingly used for imaging of the coronary arteries for the evaluation of (suspected) coronary artery disease, but many other cardiac structures may be the topic for CT investigation. This article reviews general indications for cardiac CT imaging. Common variants and pathologies of the cardiovascular system are illustrated by clinical examples. Abstract

Neural computation, Volume 21, Issue 6, 1 1 2009, Pages 1554-1588 A first-order nonhomogeneous Markov model for the response of spiking neurons stimulated by small phase-continuous signals. Tapson J, Jin C, van Schaik A, Etienne-Cummings R
We present a first-order nonhomogeneous Markov model for the interspike-interval density of a continuously stimulated spiking neuron. The model allows the conditional interspike-interval density and the stationary interspike-interval density to be expressed as products of two separate functions, one of which describes only the neuron characteristics and the other of which describes only the signal characteristics. The approximation shows particularly clearly that signal autocorrelations and cros... Abstract

Active response of a microbubble is characterized by its resonance behavior where the microbubble might oscillate after the excitation waveform has been turned off. We investigate in this paper an excitation approach based on this resonance phenomenon using chirps. The technique, called chirp reversal, consists in transmitting a first excitation signal, the up-sweep chirp (UPF) of increasing frequency with time, and a second excitation signal, the down-sweep (DNF) that is a replica of the first... Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) has become an effective therapy to treat coronary artery diseases. However, one of the major drawbacks of PCI is the occurrence of restenosis in 8 to 40% of all treated patients. The GENetic Determinants of Restenosis (GENDER) project was designed to study the association between genetic polymorphisims and clinical restenosis. The discovery of genetic variants associated to the occurrence of restenosis after PCI may provide a more tailored therapy and may... Abstract

Since its identification in April 2009, an A(H1N1) virus containing a unique combination of gene segments from both North American and Eurasian swine lineages has continued to circulate in humans. The lack of similarity between the 2009 A(H1N1) virus and its nearest relatives indicates that its gene segments have been circulating undetected for an extended period. Its low genetic diversity suggests that the introduction into humans was a single event or multiple events of similar viruses. Molecu... Abstract

European heart journal, Volume 30, Issue 13, 22 4 2009, Pages 1559-1564 The current status of interventions aiming at reducing sudden cardiac death in dialysis patients. de Bie MK, van Dam B, Gaasbeek A, van Buren M, van Erven L, Bax JJ, Schalij MJ, Rabelink TJ, Jukema JW
Mortality in dialysis patients is extremely high, with an annual death rate of approximately 23%. Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is the single largest cause of death in dialysis patients accounting for approximately 60% of all cardiac deaths and 25% of all-cause mortality. Interventions aiming at reducing cardiovascular mortality, especially SCD, in dialysis patients are therefore extremely important and clinically highly relevant. The purpose of this review is to give an outline of the epidemiology... Abstract
