Circulation, Volume 110, Issue 11 Suppl 1, 1 1 2004, Pages II18-22 Extensive left ventricular remodeling does not allow viable myocardium to improve in left ventricular ejection fraction after revascularization and is associated with worse long-term prognosis. Bax JJ, Schinkel AF, Boersma E, Elhendy A, Rizzello V, Maat A, Roelandt JR, van der Wall EE, Poldermans D
Background: Extensive left ventricular (LV) remodeling may not allow functional recovery after revascularization, despite the presence of viable myocardium. Methods and results: Seventy-nine consecutive patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy (left ventricle ejection fraction [LVEF] 29+/-7%) underwent surgical revascularization. Before revascularization, viability was assessed by metabolic imaging with F18-fluorodeoxyglucose and SPECT. LV volumes and LVEF were assessed by resting echocardiography.... Abstract

The American journal of cardiology, Volume 94, Issue 6, 1 1 2004, Pages 757-760 Comparison of long-term effect of coronary artery bypass grafting in patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy with viable versus nonviable left ventricular myocardium. Rizzello V, Poldermans D, Biagini E, Kertai MD, Schinkel AF, Boersma E, Krenning B, Vourvouri EC, Bountioukos M, Crea F, Roelandt JR, Bax JJ
In this study, 63% of patients with a substantial amount of viable myocardium showed an increased left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) 12 +/- 3 months after coronary artery bypass grafting. In 93% of these patients, increased LVEF persisted at 4.5 +/- 1 years of follow-up. Conversely, in nonviable patients, LVEF did not increase at 12 +/- 3 months or at follow-up of 4.5 +/- 1 years. The American journal of cardiology, Volume 94, Issue 6, 1 1 2004, Pages 733-739 Prognostic value of dobutamine stress echocardiography in patients with systemic hypertension and known or suspected coronary artery disease. Sozzi FB, Elhendy A, Rizzello V, van Domburg RT, Kertai M, Vourvouri E, Schinkel AF, Bax JJ, Roelandt JR, Poldermans D
Currently, there are no outcome data to suggest an incremental value of stress echocardiography in the risk stratification of patients who have hypertension after controlling for the left ventricular mass index (LVMI). This study assessed the incremental value of dobutamine stress echocardiography (DSE) for the prediction of mortality rate and cardiac events in patients who have hypertension. We studied 596 patients who had hypertension (mean age 62 +/- 12 years; 382 men) and who underwent DSE f... Abstract

Journal of pediatric gastroenterology and nutrition, Volume 39, Issue 3, 1 1 2004, Pages 275-285 Regulatory regions in the rat lactase-phlorizin hydrolase gene that control cell-specific expression. Verhave M, Krasinski SD, Christian SI, Van Schaik S, Van Den Brink GR, Doting EM, Maas SM, Wolthers KC, Grand RJ, Montgomery RK
Objectives: Lactase-phlorizin hydrolase (LPH) is an enterocyte-specific gene whose expression has been well-characterized, not only developmentally but also along the crypt-villus axis and along the length of the small bowel. Previous studies from the authors' laboratory have demonstrated that 2 kb of the 5'-flanking region of the rat LPH gene control the correct tissue, cell, and crypt-villus expression in transgenic animals. Methods: To examine further the regulation conferred by thi... Abstract

The Journal of clinical endocrinology and metabolism, Volume 89, Issue 9, 1 1 2004, Pages 4391-4396 Circulating free insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I, total IGF-I, and IGF binding protein-3 levels do not predict the future risk to develop prostate cancer: results of a case-control study involving 201 patients within a population-based screening with a 4-year interval. Janssen JA, Wildhagen MF, Ito K, Blijenberg BG, Van Schaik RH, Roobol MJ, Pols HA, Lamberts SW, Schröder FH
Recent studies have reported that serum IGF-I levels in the highest quartile of the normal range and IGF binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3) in the lowest quartile of the normal range are associated with an increased risk of future prostate cancer and/or presence of prostate cancer. It has also been suggested that the measurement of circulating total IGF-I concentrations might be a useful tool for the early detection of prostate cancer in men with moderately increased prostate-specific antigen (PSA) lev... Clinical science (London, England : 1979), Volume 107, Issue 3, 1 1 2004, Pages 255-261 An integrated evaluation of endothelial constitutive nitric oxide synthase polymorphisms and coronary artery disease in men. Agema WR, de Maat MP, Zwinderman AH, Kastelein JJ, Rabelink TJ, van Boven AJ, Feskens EJ, Boer JM, van der Wall EE, Jukema JW
In the present study, we sought to evaluate the role of three polymorphisms in the ecNOS (endothelial constitutive nitric oxide synthase) gene in relation to the existence, severity and progression of CAD (coronary artery disease), MI (myocardial infarction) and the occurrence of ischaemia in a predominantly Caucasian population. Patients with CAD (n = 760) and age- and sex-matched population-based controls (n = 691) were genotyped for the -786T/C, E/D298 and 4a/b polymorphisms. Patients were ra... Abstract

Circulation, Volume 110, Issue 11 Suppl 1, 1 1 2004, Pages II103-8 Restrictive annuloplasty and coronary revascularization in ischemic mitral regurgitation results in reverse left ventricular remodeling. Bax JJ, Braun J, Somer ST, Klautz R, Holman ER, Versteegh MI, Boersma E, Schalij MJ, van der Wall EE, Dion RA
Background: Data on combined coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and restrictive annuloplasty in patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy are scarce, and the effect on reverse left ventricular (LV) remodeling is unknown. Methods and results: 51 patients with ischemic LV dysfunction (LV ejection fraction 31+/-8%) and severe mitral regurgitation (grade 3 to 4+) underwent CABG and restrictive annuloplasty with stringent downsizing of the mitral annulus (by 2 sizes, Physio-ring, mean size 28+/-2). Circulation, Volume 110, Issue 11, 30 5 2004, Pages 1418-1423 Plasma levels of cholesteryl ester transfer protein and the risk of future coronary artery disease in apparently healthy men and women: the prospective EPIC (European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and nutrition)-Norfolk population study. Boekholdt SM, Kuivenhoven JA, Wareham NJ, Peters RJ, Jukema JW, Luben R, Bingham SA, Day NE, Kastelein JJ, Khaw KT
Background: Low plasma levels of cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) are associated with elevated levels of HDL cholesterol (HDL-C), but it remains unclear whether this translates into a concomitant reduction in the risk of coronary artery disease (CAD). Evidence exists that the effect of CETP depends on metabolic context, in particular on triglyceride levels. Methods and results: A nested case-control study was performed in the prospective EPIC-Norfolk cohort study. Cases were apparently... Abstract

Nederlands tijdschrift voor geneeskunde, Volume 148, Issue 33, 1 1 2004, Pages 1646-1647 [National registry and DNA-bank of patients with congenital heart disease: the CONCOR-project]. Vriend JW, van der Velde ET, Mulder BJ
Although survival of patients with congenital heart disease has dramatically improved since surgical repair has become available, cure is seldom achieved. Exact data on long-term outcome are not available, however, because a national registry is lacking. Furthermore, little is known about the role of genetic defects in the development of congenital heart disease. The CONCOR-project (CONgenital CORvitia) has been set up to facilitate the investigation of the long-term outcome and molecular basis... Abstract

The American journal of cardiology, Volume 94, Issue 3, 1 1 2004, Pages 284-288 Quantification of myocardial infarct size and transmurality by contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging in men. Schuijf JD, Kaandorp TA, Lamb HJ, van der Geest RJ, Viergever EP, van der Wall EE, de Roos A, Bax JJ
Contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance (ce-MR) imaging allows precise delineation of infarct transmurality. An issue of debate is whether data analysis should be performed visually or quantitatively. Accordingly, a head-to-head comparison was performed between visual and quantitative analyses of infarct transmurality on ce-MR imaging. In addition, infarct transmurality was related to the severity of wall motion abnormalities at rest. In 27 patients with long-term ischemic left ventricular (LV) dys... Abstract

The American journal of cardiology, Volume 94, Issue 4, 1 1 2004, Pages 427-430 Feasibility of assessment of coronary stent patency using 16-slice computed tomography. Schuijf JD, Bax JJ, Jukema JW, Lamb HJ, Warda HM, Vliegen HW, de Roos A, van der Wall EE
Intracoronary stent implantation is a frequently performed procedure in the treatment of stenoses in coronary arteries, but in-stent restenosis occurs in approximately 10% to 15% of patients. A noninvasive diagnostic procedure to evaluate in-stent restenosis would therefore be of great benefit. We investigated the feasibility of assessing stent patency with 16-slice computed tomography. Multislice computed tomography (MSCT) was performed in 22 patients with previously implanted stents. For each... Abstract

The American journal of cardiology, Volume 94, Issue 3, 1 1 2004, Pages 289-293 Differential prognostic significance of peri-infarction versus remote myocardial ischemia on stress technetium-99m sestamibi tomography in patients with healed myocardial infarction. Elhendy A, Schinkel AF, van Domburg RT, Bax JJ, Poldermans D
Peri-infarction and remote myocardial ischemia involve different myocardial substrates, but their differential clinical implications have not been previously studied. We assessed the differential prognostic significance of peri-infarction and remote ischemia during long-term follow-up in patients with healed myocardial infarction. We studied 345 patients (59 +/- 12 years old; 282 men) with previous myocardial infarction who demonstrated reversible perfusion abnormalities on exercise or dobutamin... Abstract

In this study, 105 healthy children (45 to 156 months old, 57 girls) were examined using ultrasound (US) imaging to obtain reference values of muscle dimensional and aspect parameters. We measured biceps and quadriceps sizes and subcutaneous tissue thickness. To quantify muscle aspect, we calculated muscle density, inhomogeneity and white-area index by digital image analysis. Age-, weight- and gender-dependencies were discussed. We demonstrated earlier that the complete set of parameters allows... Abstract

Journal of virology, Volume 78, Issue 15, 1 1 2004, Pages 8264-8270 Recovery of human metapneumovirus genetic lineages a and B from cloned cDNA. Herfst S, de Graaf M, Schickli JH, Tang RS, Kaur J, Yang CF, Spaete RR, Haller AA, van den Hoogen BG, Osterhaus AD, Fouchier RA
Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) is a newly discovered pathogen associated with respiratory tract illness, primarily in young children, immunocompromised individuals, and the elderly. The genomic sequence of the prototype hMPV isolate NL/1/00 without the terminal leader and trailer sequences has been reported previously. Here we describe the leader and trailer sequences of two hMPV isolates, NL/1/00 and NL/1/99, representing the two main genetic lineages of hMPV. Minigenome constructs in which the g... Abstract
