Optics express, Volume 20, Issue 18, 1 1 2012, Pages 20635-20646 Asymmetric light propagation in chirped photonic crystal waveguides. Kurt H, Yilmaz D, Akosman AE, Ozbay E
We report numerical and experimental investigations of asymmetric light propagation in a newly designed photonic structure that is formed by creating a chirped photonic crystal (PC) waveguide. The use of a non-symmetric distribution of unit cells of PC ensures the obtaining of asymmetric light propagation. Properly designing the spatial modulation of a PC waveguide inherently modifies the band structure. That in turn induces asymmetry for the light's followed path. The investigation of the... Abstract

Journal of cellular and molecular medicine, Volume 16, Issue 8, 1 1 2012, Pages 1866-1877 Epigenetic control of CCR5 transcript levels in immune cells and modulation by small molecules inhibitors. Wierda RJ, Kuipers HF, van Eggermond MC, Benard A, van Leeuwen JC, Carluccio S, Geutskens SB, Jukema JW, Marquez VE, Quax PH, van den Elsen PJ
Previously, we have shown that CCR5 transcription is regulated by CREB-1. However, the ubiquitous pattern of CREB-1 expression suggests the involvement of an additional level of transcriptional control in the cell type-specific expression of CCR5. In this study, we show that epigenetic changes (i.e. DNA methylation and histone modifications) within the context of the CCR5 P1 promoter region correlate with transcript levels of CCR5 in healthy and in malignant CD4(+) T lymphocytes as well as in C... American heart journal, Volume 164, Issue 2, 1 1 2012, Pages 146-152 The rationale and design of the Shockless IMPLant Evaluation (SIMPLE) trial: a randomized, controlled trial of defibrillation testing at the time of defibrillator implantation. Healey JS, Hohnloser SH, Glikson M, Neuzner J, Viñolas X, Mabo P, Kautzner J, O'Hara G, Van Erven L, Gadler F, Appl U, Connolly SJ
Defibrillation testing (DT) has been an integral part of defibrillator (implantable cardioverter defibrillator [ICD]) implantation; however, there is little evidence that it improves outcomes. Surveys show a trend toward ICD implantation without DT, which now exceeds 30% to 60% in some regions. Because there is no evidence to support dramatic shift in practice, a randomized trial is urgently needed. The SIMPLE trial will determine if ICD implantation without any DT is noninferior to implantation... Abstract

European heart journal. Cardiovascular Imaging, Volume 14, Issue 1, 29 5 2012, Pages 69-76 Global longitudinal strain predicts left ventricular dysfunction after mitral valve repair. Witkowski TG, Thomas JD, Debonnaire PJ, Delgado V, Hoke U, Ewe SH, Versteegh MI, Holman ER, Schalij MJ, Bax JJ, Klautz RJ, Marsan NA
Aims: Despite a successful surgical procedure and adherence to current recommendations, postoperative left ventricular (LV) dysfunction after mitral valve repair (MVr) for organic mitral regurgitation (MR) may still occur. New approaches are therefore needed to detect subclinical preoperative LV dysfunction. LV global longitudinal strain (GLS), assessed with speckle-tracking echocardiographic analysis, has been proposed as a novel measure to better depict latent LV dysfunction. The aim of this s... Frontiers in oncology, Volume 2, 25 4 2012, Pages 77 The splicing mutant of the human tumor suppressor protein DFNA5 induces programmed cell death when expressed in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Van Rossom S, Op de Beeck K, Franssens V, Swinnen E, Schepers A, Ghillebert R, Caldara M, Van Camp G, Winderickx J
DFNA5 was first identified as a gene responsible for autosomal dominant deafness. Different mutations were found, but they all resulted in exon 8 skipping during splicing and premature termination of the protein. Later, it became clear that the protein also has a tumor suppression function and that it can induce apoptosis. Epigenetic silencing of the DFNA5 gene is associated with different types of cancers, including gastric and colorectal cancers as well as breast tumors. We introduced the wild... Abstract

International journal of proteomics, Volume 2012, 18 3 2012, Pages 971907 Proteolytic Potential of the MSC Exosome Proteome: Implications for an Exosome-Mediated Delivery of Therapeutic Proteasome. Lai RC, Tan SS, Teh BJ, Sze SK, Arslan F, de Kleijn DP, Choo A, Lim SK
Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are used in many of the current stem cell-based clinical trials and their therapeutic efficacy has increasingly been attributed to secretion of paracrine factors. We have previously demonstrated that a therapeutic constituent of this secretion is exosome, a secreted bilipid membrane vesicle of ~50-100 nm with a complex cargo that is readily internalized by H9C2 cardiomyocytes. It reduces infarct size in a mouse model of myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (MI/R) injury.... Abstract

The international journal of cardiovascular imaging, Volume 29, Issue 2, 12 2 2012, Pages 343-354 23Na chemical shift imaging and Gd enhancement of myocardial edema. Aguor EN, van de Kolk CW, Arslan F, Nederhoff MG, Doevendans PA, Pasterkamp G, Strijkers GJ, van Echteld CJ
Myocardial edema can arise in several disease states. MRI contrast agent can accumulate in edematous tissue, which complicates differential diagnosis with contrast-enhanced (CE)-MRI and might lead to overestimation of infarct size. Sodium Chemical Shift Imaging ((23)Na-CSI) may provide an alternative for edema imaging. We have developed a non-infarct, isolated rat heart model with two levels of edema, which was studied with (23)Na-CSI and CE-MRI. In edematous, but viable tissue the extracellular... Abstract
