Atherosclerosis, Volume 398, 7 1 2024, Pages 118595 Arterial inflammation on [18F]FDG PET/CT in melanoma patients treated with and without immune checkpoint inhibitors: CHECK-FLAME I. Polomski EAS, Kapiteijn EW, Heemelaar JC, van der Kolk AV, Kalisvaart TM, van de Burgt A, Dibbets-Schneider P, van Velden FHP, Seijkens TTP, Stöger JL, Jukema JW, de Geus-Oei LF, Antoni ML
Background and aims: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) revolutionized cancer treatment. However, ICIs may increase the immune response to non-tumor cells, possibly resulting in increased arterial inflammation, raising the risk of atherosclerotic events. Nevertheless, malignancies may induce a pro-inflammatory state and the association between ICIs and arterial inflammation remains to be clarified. This study aims to assess differences in increase in arterial inflammation between patients with... Abstract

Frontiers in neuroscience, Volume 18, 6 1 2024, Pages 1450640 Memory-efficient neurons and synapses for spike-timing-dependent-plasticity in large-scale spiking networks. Urbizagastegui P, van Schaik A, Wang R
This paper addresses the challenges posed by frequent memory access during simulations of large-scale spiking neural networks involving synaptic plasticity. We focus on the memory accesses performed during a common synaptic plasticity rule since this can be a significant factor limiting the efficiency of the simulations. We propose neuron models that are represented by only three state variables, which are engineered to enforce the appropriate neuronal dynamics. Additionally, memory retrieval is... Abstract

Background: Patients with lower extremity arterial disease (LEAD) frequently require revascularization procedures. Currently used diagnostic methods are insufficient in predicting successful outcomes and focus on macrovascular rather than microvascular state. Several promising modalities to increase diagnostic accuracy are emerging, including maximal systolic acceleration (ACCmax), measured by duplex ultrasound (DUS). For the assessment of tissue perfusion, near-infrared fluorescence (NIR) imagi... Abstract

Introduction: Patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) remain vulnerable to future major atherosclerotic events after revascularization, despite effective secondary prevention strategies. Inflammation plays a central role in the pathogenesis of CAD and recurrent events. To date, there is no specific anti-inflammatory medicine available with proven effective, cost-efficient, and favorable benefit-risk profile, except for colchicine. Initial studies with colchicine have sparked major interest i... Abstract

Neural computation, Volume 36, Issue 10, 1 1 2024, Pages 1939-2029 Electrical Signaling Beyond Neurons. Monk T, Dennler N, Ralph N, Rastogi S, Afshar S, Urbizagastegui P, Jarvis R, van Schaik A, Adamatzky A
Neural action potentials (APs) are difficult to interpret as signal encoders and/or computational primitives. Their relationships with stimuli and behaviors are obscured by the staggering complexity of nervous systems themselves. We can reduce this complexity by observing that "simpler" neuron-less organisms also transduce stimuli into transient electrical pulses that affect their behaviors. Without a complicated nervous system, APs are often easier to understand as signal/response mec... Abstract

Purpose: Platinum-based chemotherapy and immune checkpoint inhibitors are key components of systemic treatment for muscle-invasive and advanced urothelial cancer. The ideal integration of these two treatment modalities remains unclear as clinical trials have led to inconsistent results. Modulation of the tumor-immune microenvironment by chemotherapy is poorly characterized. We aimed to investigate this modulation, focusing on potential clinical implications for immune checkpoint inhibitor respon... Abstract

Sewage metagenomics has risen to prominence in urban population surveillance of pathogens and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Unknown species with similarity to known genomes cause database bias in reference-based metagenomics. To improve surveillance, we seek to recover sewage genomes and develop a quantification and correlation workflow for these genomes and AMR over time. We use longitudinal sewage sampling in seven treatment plants from five major European cities to explore the utility of ca... Abstract
