Waste management (New York, N.Y.), Volume 205, 4 1 2025, Pages 115003 Coupling of chemical deconstruction and pyrolysis to upcycle metallized multilayer plastic films. Kulas D, Aloba S, Noecker A, Putman L, Meinholz C, Garland K, Henry J, Flores H, Chipkar S, Zolghadr A, Techtmann S, Ong R, Shonnard D
Multilayer metallized plastic films are popular packaging materials that are not currently recycled due to their complex multi-material make-up. In this study, a sequential pathway combining chemical, thermal and biological techniques was introduced to recycle military multilayer packaging made up of Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET), Polyethylene (PE), and aluminum. Chemical deconstruction using 10 wt% aqueous ammonia was able to selectively depolymerize the PET layer at a conversion close to 10... Abstract

Background: Androgen receptor pathway inhibitors (ARPIs) have significantly improved clinical outcomes for patients with metastatic prostate cancer (PC) but acquired ARPI resistance remains universal. Maximizing ARPI treatment duration is crucial to optimal clinical outcomes, but current clinical tools to detect acquired ARPI resistance, including serum Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) and radiographic disease monitoring, are limited in both sensitivity and specificity. Since prostate cancer dise... Abstract
JAMA cardiology, 2 1 2025 Location of LMNA Variants and Clinical Outcomes in Cardiomyopathy. Bhaskaran A, Ben Yaou R, Helms AS, Fayssoil A, Richard P, Stojkovic T, Anselme F, Labombarda F, Chikhaoui C, De Sandre-Giovannoli A, Jeru I, Leturcq F, Vigouroux C, Dembele M, Elliott P, Savvatis K, Zeppenfeld K, Bouguerra H, Charron P, Kumar S, Bonne G, Wahbi K, Lakdawala NK
Importance: Prior studies have suggested that patients with nonmissense (ie, truncating) variants causing LMNA cardiomyopathy have worse arrhythmic outcomes compared to those with missense variants. However, the effect of the spatial distribution of missense and truncating variants on clinical outcomes remains poorly understood. Objective: To determine the association of the spatial distribution of missense and truncating LMNA variants with cardiac outcomes. Design, setting, and participants: Th... Abstract
European heart journal. Cardiovascular Imaging, Volume 26, Issue 8, 1 1 2025, Pages 1466-1474 Left ventricular dilatation in patients with significant aortic regurgitation: association with outcome. Lopez Santi P, Bernard J, Fortuni F, Butcher SC, Meucci MC, Sarrazyn C, Chua AP, Nabeta T, Zhang J, Popescu BA, Tay ELW, Yiu KH, Clavel MA, Pibarot P, Bax JJ, Ajmone Marsan N
Aims: Left ventricular (LV) dilatation is an important prognostic factor in patients with aortic regurgitation (AR). Although current guidelines recommend the use of LV end-systolic diameter index (LVESDi) to indicate the need for intervention, recent studies suggested that LV end-systolic volume index (LVESVi) may more accurately characterize LV remodelling. The present study aims to evaluate, in a multi-centre setting, whether combining LV linear and volumetric measures could improve risk strat... Methods and results: We assessed sex-differences in P-wave morphology in 12-lead ECG in healthy young New Zealand White rabbits. Males presente... Abstract
Frontiers in physiology, Volume 16, 1 1 2025, Pages 1631426 Functional conduction system mapping in sheep reveals Purkinje spikes in the free wall of the right ventricular outflow tract. Blok M, den Ouden BL, Kuiper M, Ophelders DRMG, Jongbloed MRM, Zeemering S, Jensen B, van Hunnik A, Boukens BJ
Ablation of sites displaying Purkinje activity is highly effective against idiopathic ventricular fibrillation which often originates in the right ventricular outflow tract. However, during endocardial mapping Purkinje potentials are rarely, if never, detected in the right ventricular outflow tract. In the present study, we aimed to determine whether the Purkinje system extends into the right ventricular outflow tract. Hearts of five female sheep were blood-perfused in a Langendorff setup in whi... Abstract

There is a growing interest in the antiquity of cancer and ongoing discussion of the apparent scarcity of malignant tumors in ancient human remains, especially those of soft tissues. We systematically assessed bone and soft tissue tumors on 45 whole-body computed tomography (CT) scans of ancient Egyptian mummies. In one of 45 cases (2%), malignant skeletal disease (probably skeletal metastases) was detected. In five of 45 cases (11%), probably malignant soft tissue masses were identified. The so... Abstract

Nederlands tijdschrift voor geneeskunde, Volume 169, 30 5 2025, Pages D8346 [Unfounded objections against the use of salbutamol/ipratropium]. Lucassen EA, Rood R, Tibboel J, Piers SRD
In acute bronchospasm due to asthma/COPD exacerbations two bronchodilators are frequently used: ipratropium, an acetylcholine antagonist, and salbutamol, a β2-agonist. The combination ipratropium/salbutamol gives more bronchodilation than ipratropium monotherapy in asthma/COPD exacerbations, but there are concerns about cardiac safety of salbutamol. Salbutamol in regular dosage does not affect heart rate in diverse populations (ED, ICU and children). Only a dosage 5-10x the standard dosage of 2,... Abstract
mBio, Volume 16, Issue 8, 30 5 2025, Pages e0035325 A redundant isoprenoid biosynthetic pathway supports Staphylococcus aureus metabolic versatility. Burtchett TA, Ottosen EN, Jitsukawa T, Kaneko M, Yasui M, Lysne JA, Kies PJ, Bailey JA, Thomas SM, Fujisaki S, Hammer ND
Isoprenoids are ubiquitous molecules that serve as fundamental building blocks for life. In bacteria, isoprenoids are precursors for carotenoid pigments, respiratory cofactors, and essential sugar carrier lipids, such as lipid II. Isoprenoid synthesis initiates via condensation of the five-carbon (C5) precursors, isopentenyl diphosphate (IPP) and dimethylallyl diphosphate (DMAPP). This initial reaction condenses one DMAPP and two IPPs, resulting in C15 farnesyl diphosphate (FPP), an intermediate... Abstract
International journal of cancer, 30 5 2025 Physical activity and risks of recurrence and progression among patients with non-muscle invasive bladder cancer. Beeren I, Kiebach J, Hof JP, Buffart LM, Aben KKH, Witjes JA, van der Heijden AG, Kiemeney LALM, Vrieling A
Previous studies in solid tumors link high physical activity (PA) levels to lower cancer recurrence risk, but evidence is lacking for patients with non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). We evaluated the association between (changes in) PA (total, moderate-to-vigorous PA, leisure-time PA, and Dutch PA guideline adherence) and risks of NMIBC recurrence and progression. Patients diagnosed between 2014 and 2021 were recruited for the multi-center prospective cohort UroLife. Participants report... Abstract
