The American journal of cardiology, Volume 123, Issue 1, 26 4 2018, Pages 75-83 Effect of Functional Mitral Regurgitation on Outcome in Patients Receiving Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy for Heart Failure. van der Bijl P, Khidir M, Ajmone Marsan N, Delgado V, Leon MB, Stone GW, Bax JJ
Functional mitral regurgitation (FMR) is common in heart failure (HF), and negatively impacts prognosis. Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) can improve FMR, but the long-term changes in and impact of FMR after CRT are still unclear. The present study investigated the prevalence, evolution and impact on mortality of FMR before and after CRT in patients with HF. A total of 1,313 patients (66 ± 11 years, 77% male, 59% ischemic heart disease) treated with CRT were evaluated. Patients were divid... Abstract

Medicine has always been characterized by a tension between the particular and the general. A clinician is obligated to treat the individual in front of her, yet she accomplishes this task by applying generalized knowledge that describes an abstract average but not necessarily a specific person. Efforts to systematize this process of moving between the particular and the general have led to the development of randomized controlled trials and large observational studies. Inclusion of tens of thou... Abstract

BMC endocrine disorders, Volume 18, Issue 1, 19 3 2018, Pages 67 Study protocol: a randomised controlled trial on the clinical effects of levothyroxine treatment for subclinical hypothyroidism in people aged 80 years and over. Du Puy RS, Postmus I, Stott DJ, Blum MR, Poortvliet RKE, Den Elzen WPJ, Peeters RP, van Munster BC, Wolffenbuttel BHR, Westendorp RGJ, Kearney PM, Ford I, Kean S, Messow CM, Watt T, Jukema JW, Dekkers OM, Smit JWA, Rodondi N, Gussekloo J, Mooijaart SP
Background: Subclinical hypothyroidism is common in older people and its contribution to health and disease needs to be elucidated further. Observational and clinical trial data on the clinical effects of subclinical hypothyroidism in persons aged 80 years and over is inconclusive, with some studies suggesting harm and some suggesting benefits, translating into equipoise whether levothyroxine therapy provides clinical benefits. This manuscript describes the study protocol for the Institute for E... Abstract

European journal of heart failure, Volume 20, Issue 11, 17 3 2018, Pages 1601-1610 Rationale and design of the phase 2b clinical trials to study the effects of the partial adenosine A1-receptor agonist neladenoson bialanate in patients with chronic heart failure with reduced (PANTHEON) and preserved (PANACHE) ejection fraction. Voors AA, Shah SJ, Bax JJ, Butler J, Gheorghiade M, Hernandez AF, Kitzman DW, McMurray JJV, Wirtz AB, Lanius V, van der Laan M, Solomon SD
Despite major advances in the treatment of chronic heart failure (HF) with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), morbidity and mortality associated with the condition remain high, suggesting the need for additional treatment options, particularly haemodynamically neutral treatments that do not alter blood pressure, heart rate, or renal function. HF with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is also associated with high morbidity and mortality and adequate treatment options are limited; thus there is... Abstract

Environmental pollution (Barking, Essex : 1987), Volume 243, Issue Pt B, 17 3 2018, Pages 1923-1929 Effects of broadband sound exposure on the interaction between foraging crab and shrimp - A field study. Hubert J, Campbell J, van der Beek JG, den Haan MF, Verhave R, Verkade LS, Slabbekoorn H
Aquatic animals live in an acoustic world in which they often rely on sound detection and recognition for various aspects of life that may affect survival and reproduction. Human exploitation of marine resources leads to increasing amounts of anthropogenic sound underwater, which may affect marine life negatively. Marine mammals and fishes are known to use sounds and to be affected by anthropogenic noise, but relatively little is known about invertebrates such as decapod crustaceans. We conducte... Abstract

NPJ genomic medicine, Volume 3, 11 2 2018, Pages 26 User considerations in assessing pharmacogenomic tests and their clinical support tools. Mukerjee G, Huston A, Kabakchiev B, Piquette-Miller M, van Schaik R, Dorfman R
Pharmacogenomic (PGx) testing is gaining recognition from physicians, pharmacists and patients as a tool for evidence-based medication management. However, seemingly similar PGx testing panels (and PGx-based decision support tools) can diverge in their technological specifications, as well as the genetic factors that determine test specificity and sensitivity, and hence offer different values for users. Reluctance to embrace PGx testing is often the result of unfamiliarity with PGx technology, a... Abstract

Journal of internal medicine, Volume 285, Issue 1, 7 1 2018, Pages 59-74 Blockade of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 inhibits intraplaque haemorrhage by normalization of plaque neovessels. de Vries MR, Parma L, Peters HAB, Schepers A, Hamming JF, Jukema JW, Goumans MJTH, Guo L, Finn AV, Virmani R, Ozaki CK, Quax PHA
Background: Plaque angiogenesis is associated with atherosclerotic lesion growth, plaque instability and negative clinical outcome. Plaque angiogenesis is a natural occurring process to fulfil the increasing demand of oxygen and nourishment of the vessel wall. However, inadequate formed, immature plaque neovessels are leaky and cause intraplaque haemorrhage. Objective: Blockade of VEGFR2 normalizes the unbridled process of plaque neovessel formation and induces maturation of nascent vessels resu... Abstract

Molecular genetics and metabolism, Volume 125, Issue 3, 5 1 2018, Pages 205-216 Development and clinical consequences of white matter lesions in Fabry disease: a systematic review. Körver S, Vergouwe M, Hollak CEM, van Schaik IN, Langeveld M
Background: Fabry disease (FD) is a rare lysosomal storage disorder that might result in, amongst other complications, early stroke and white matter lesions (WMLs). More insight in WMLs in FD could clarify the role of WMLs in the disease presentation and prognosis in FD. In this systematic review we assessed the prevalence, severity, location and course of WMLs in FD. We also systematically reviewed the evidence on the relation between WMLs, disease characteristics and clinical parameters. Metho... Abstract

Current opinion in cardiology, Volume 33, Issue 5, 1 1 2018, Pages 470-478 Application of left ventricular strain in patients with aortic and mitral valve disease. Ng ACT, Delgado V, Bax JJ
Purpose of review: Left ventricular (LV) global longitudinal strain (GLS) is widely recognized as a more sensitive measure of LV systolic function compared with LV ejection fraction (LVEF). In addition, the measurement of LVGLS is more reproducible than two-dimensional LVEF. Current guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of valvular heart disease include LVEF as one of the parameters to take into consideration in the clinical decision-making. However, a large body of evidence is showing that LVG... Abstract
