Six extant species of non-human great apes are currently recognized: Sumatran and Bornean orangutans, eastern and western gorillas, and chimpanzees and bonobos [1]. However, large gaps remain in our knowledge of fine-scale variation in hominoid morphology, behavior, and genetics, and aspects of great ape taxonomy remain in flux. This is particularly true for orangutans (genus: Pongo), the only Asian great apes and phylogenetically our most distant relatives among extant hominids [1]. Designation... Abstract

Background: Mediastinal and central large vessels (T4) invasion by lung cancer is often difficult to assess preoperatively due to the limited accuracy of computed tomography (CT) scan of the chest. Esophageal ultrasound (EUS) can visualize the relationship of para-esophageally located lung tumors to surrounding mediastinal structures. Aim: To assess the value of EUS for detecting mediastinal invasion (T4) of centrally located lung tumors. Methods: Patients who underwent EUS for the diagnosis and... Abstract

Cardiovascular Imaging, Volume 18, Issue 11, 1 1 2017, Pages 1206-1213 Frequency and angiographic characteristics of coronary microvascular dysfunction in stable angina: a hybrid imaging study. Stenström I, Maaniitty T, Uusitalo V, Pietilä M, Ukkonen H, Kajander S, Mäki M, Bax JJ, Knuuti J, Saraste A
Aims: Coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD) can cause angina in the absence of obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD). We studied the frequency and angiographic characteristics of CMD in symptomatic patients with suspected stable CAD and identified CMD as diffusely abnormal coronary vasodilator capacity by positron emission tomography (PET) perfusion imaging. Methods and results: We recruited prospectively 189 patients with intermediate pre-test probability of CAD who underwent coronary co... Abstract

Circulation. Arrhythmia and electrophysiology, Volume 10, Issue 11, 1 1 2017, Pages e005591 Localized Optogenetic Targeting of Rotors in Atrial Cardiomyocyte Monolayers. Feola I, Volkers L, Majumder R, Teplenin A, Schalij MJ, Panfilov AV, de Vries AAF, Pijnappels DA
Background: Recently, a new ablation strategy for atrial fibrillation has emerged, which involves the identification of rotors (ie, local drivers) followed by the localized targeting of their core region by ablation. However, this concept has been subject to debate because the mode of arrhythmia termination remains poorly understood, as dedicated models and research tools are lacking. We took a unique optogenetic approach to induce and locally target a rotor in atrial monolayers. Methods and res... Abstract

Journal of vascular surgery, Volume 66, Issue 5, 1 1 2017, Pages 1379-1389 Long-term survival and secondary procedures after open or endovascular repair of abdominal aortic aneurysms. van Schaik TG, Yeung KK, Verhagen HJ, de Bruin JL, van Sambeek MRHM, Balm R, Zeebregts CJ, van Herwaarden JA, Blankensteijn JD, DREAM trial participants
Objective: Randomized trials have shown an initial survival benefit of endovascular over conventional open abdominal aortic aneurysm repair but no long-term difference up to 6 years after repair. Longer follow-up may be required to demonstrate the cumulative negative impact on survival of higher reintervention rates associated with endovascular repair. Methods: We updated the results of the Dutch Randomized Endovascular Aneurysm Management (DREAM) trial, a multicenter, randomized controlled tria... Abstract

BMC musculoskeletal disorders, Volume 18, Issue 1, 27 4 2017, Pages 424 Design of the SALT Osteoporosis Study: a randomised pragmatic trial, to study a primary care screening and treatment program for the prevention of fractures in women aged 65 years or older. Elders PJM, Merlijn T, Swart KMA, van Hout W, van der Zwaard BC, Niemeijer C, Heymans MW, van der Heijden AA, Rutters F, van der Horst HE, Lips P, Netelenbos JC, van Schoor NM
Background: Several drugs have become available for the treatment of osteoporosis. However, screening and treatment of patients with a high fracture risk is currently not recommended in the Netherlands, because the effectiveness of bone sparing drugs has not been demonstrated in the general primary care population. Here we describe the design of the SALT Osteoporosis study, which aims to examine whether the screening and treatment of older, female patients in primary care can reduce fractures, i... Abstract

The international journal of cardiovascular imaging, Volume 34, Issue 4, 27 4 2017, Pages 495-502 In-stent fractional flow reserve variations and related optical coherence tomography findings: the FFR-OCT co-registration study. Pyxaras SA, Adriaenssens T, Barbato E, Ughi GJ, Di Serafino L, De Vroey F, Toth G, Tu S, Reiber JHC, Bax JJ, Wijns W
We sought to assess in-stent variations in fractional flow reserve (FFR) in patients with previous percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and to associate any drop in FFR with findings by optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging. Suboptimal post-PCI FFR values were previously associated with poor outcomes. It is not known to which extent in-stent pressure loss contributes to reduced FFR. In this single-arm observational study, 26 patients who previously underwent PCI with drug-eluting stent... Abstract
