Oncogene, Volume 16, Issue 1, 1 1 1998, Pages 95-103 Human growth-differentiation factor 3 (hGDF3): developmental regulation in human teratocarcinoma cell lines and expression in primary testicular germ cell tumours. Caricasole AA, van Schaik RH, Zeinstra LM, Wierikx CD, van Gurp RJ, van den Pol M, Looijenga LH, Oosterhuis JW, Pera MF, Ward A, de Bruijn D, Kramer P, de Jong FH, van den Eijnden-van Raaij AJ
We describe the cloning and initial characterization of a novel cDNA from human embryonal carcinoma (EC) cells. This cDNA, which we named human growth differentiation factor 3 (hGDF3), encodes the homologue of mouse GDF3, a TGFbeta superfamily member belonging to the Growth/Differentiation Factors. We have analysed the expression of hGDF3 in human embryonal carcinoma cell lines and in primary testicular germ cell tumours of adolescents and adults (TGCTs). Expression of hGDF3 in human EC cell lin... Abstract

Clinical genetics, Volume 53, Issue 1, 1 1 1998, Pages 27-33 The Asn9 variant of lipoprotein lipase is associated with the -93G promoter mutation and an increased risk of coronary artery disease. The Regress Study Group. Kastelein JJ, Groenemeyer BE, Hallman DM, Henderson H, Reymer PW, Gagné SE, Jansen H, Seidell JC, Kromhout D, Jukema JW, Bruschke AV, Boerwinkle E, Hayden MR
Two mutations in the lipoprotein lipase (LPL) gene, a T to G transition at position -93 of the proximal promoter region and an Asp9Asn substitution in exon 2, were examined in 762 Dutch males with angiographically-diagnosed coronary artery disease (CAD) and 296 healthy normolipidemic Dutch males. The two mutations exhibited strong linkage disequilibrium (D' = 0.975). A significantly higher proportion of cases (4.86%) than controls (1.37%) carried the -93G/Asn9 allele (p = 0.008). In the com... Abstract

Journal of molecular biology, Volume 283, Issue 1, 1 1 1998, Pages 95-110 The nature of antibody heavy chain residue H6 strongly influences the stability of a VH domain lacking the disulfide bridge. Langedijk AC, Honegger A, Maat J, Planta RJ, van Schaik RC, Plückthun A
Monoclonal antibody mAb 03/01/01, directed against the musk odorant traseolide, carries a serine residue instead of the conserved Cys H92 in the heavy chain variable domain, and is thus lacking the highly conserved disulfide bridge. We investigated the energetic consequence of restoring the disulfide bond and the nature of residue H6 (Glu or Gln), which is poised to interact with Ser H92 in the recombinant scFv fragment obtained from this antibody. In the scFv fragment derived from this antibody... Abstract

Toxicology, Volume 125, Issue 1, 1 1 1998, Pages 21-30 Ozone affects breathing and pulmonary surfactant function in mice. Currie WD, van Schaik SM, Vargas I, Enhorning G
The effect on breathing of BALB/c mice immediately following ozone exposure (2 ppm) for 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 h was studied with a whole body plethysmograph. Whether such exposure affected the normal function of pulmonary surfactant of maintaining airway patency was evaluated with a capillary surfactometer. Respiratory rate in mice that were not exposed was 358+/-16 (mean+/-S.E.) breaths/min and decreased to 202+/-10 after 6 h exposure. The mean pressure change caused by breathing diminished signifi... Background: Fluorophotometric variables (permeability of the blood-retinal barrier (BRB) and blood-aqueous barrier (BAB), corneal autofluorescence, and lenticular light transmittance) are reported to correlate with the severity of diabetic retinopathy. This preliminary multicenter study was performed to measure these variables simultaneously in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and to assess which of these variables could be of help in evaluating diabetic retinopathy. Methods: Eighty-two pa... Abstract

The American journal of cardiology, Volume 81, Issue 2, 1 1 1998, Pages 152-157 Clinical and angiographic outcome of Micro Stent II implantation in native coronary arteries. Oemrawsingh PV, Tuinenburg JC, Schalij MJ, Jukema JW, Reiber JH, Bruschke AV
To evaluate immediate success and 6-month restenosis rate, 70 Micro Stents II were implanted for 65 stenoses in 63 patients (age 59+/-9 years). Stable angina pectoris was present in 47% of the patients (38% class I to III; 9% class IV), whereas 32% had postinfarction angina and 21% had unstable angina. Indications for stent implantation were elective in 62% and semi-elective in 38% of the patients. Sixty-two percent of the patients received ticlopidin and acetylsalicylic acid for 28 days, wherea... The New England journal of medicine, Volume 338, Issue 2, 1 1 1998, Pages 86-93 The role of a common variant of the cholesteryl ester transfer protein gene in the progression of coronary atherosclerosis. The Regression Growth Evaluation Statin Study Group. Kuivenhoven JA, Jukema JW, Zwinderman AH, de Knijff P, McPherson R, Bruschke AV, Lie KI, Kastelein JJ
Background: The high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol concentration is inversely related to the risk of coronary artery disease. The cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) has a central role in the metabolism of this lipoprotein and may therefore alter the susceptibility to atherosclerosis. Methods: The DNA of 807 men with angiographically documented coronary atherosclerosis was analyzed for the presence of a polymorphism in the gene coding for CETP. The presence of this DNA variation wa... Abstract

Catheterization and cardiovascular diagnosis, Volume 43, Issue 1, 1 1 1998, Pages 19-27; discussion 28 Micro stent I, initial results, and six months follow-up by quantitative coronary angiography. Schalij MJ, Savalle LH, Tresukosol D, Jukema JW, Reiber JH, Bruschke AV
The Micro stent (MS) is a balloon expandable stent that allows the treatment of stenoses in distal and tortuous coronary arteries. This prospective study was performed to evaluate initial and late results of MS implantations. A total of 127 MS (101 in native coronary arteries and 26 in saphenous vein grafts) were implanted in 85 patients (1.5 stents/pt, 65 male, and 20 female, age 62, +/-10 yr) with angina pectoris class II-III: 21 (25%), angina pectoris class IV: 41(48%), and acute myocardial i... Journal of virology, Volume 72, Issue 1, 1 1 1998, Pages 862-867 Identification of the leader-body junctions for the viral subgenomic mRNAs and organization of the simian hemorrhagic fever virus genome: evidence for gene duplication during arterivirus evolution. Godeny EK, de Vries AA, Wang XC, Smith SL, de Groot RJ
Simian hemorrhagic fever virus (SHFV) was recently reclassified and assigned to the new virus family Arteriviridae. During replication, arteriviruses produce a 3' coterminal, nested set of subgenomic mRNAs (sgRNAs). These sgRNAs arise by discontinuous transcription, and each contains a 5' leader sequence which is joined to the body of the mRNA through a conserved junction sequence. Only the 5'-most open reading frame (ORF) is believed to be transcribed from each sgRNA. The SHFV ge... Abstract

Magnetic resonance imaging, Volume 16, Issue 2, 1 1 1998, Pages 137-145 A new diagnostic approach to vascular rings and pulmonary slings: the role of MRI. Beekman RP, Hazekamp MG, Sobotka MA, Meijboom EJ, de Roos A, Staalman CR, Beek FJ, Ottenkamp J
Unlabelled: The conventional diagnostic work-up of a patient suspected of having a vascular cause for stridor, or dysphagia, includes esophagography and bronchoscopy to delineate the abnormal structure without imaging the structure itself. Cine-angiography is regarded as the golden standard, but is not routinely performed. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is non-invasive and has the important advantage over cine-angiography of depicting all structures in the field of view. Color Doppler echocard... Abstract
Nederlands tijdschrift voor geneeskunde, Volume 142, Issue 1, 1 1 1998, Pages 6-9 [Clinical drug research in children: current international guidelines. Committee for Proprietary Medicinal Products]. Ruys-Dudok van Heel I, Cohen AF, Wit JM, van der Heijden AJ, van den Anker JN, van Meurs AH
Drugs research in children entails a number of problems: medical-ethical, pharmacological (owing to the immaturity of the organs and the growth and development of the child) and financial (because children do not use many drugs). Consequently, children are exposed to insufficiently tested drugs and new therapeutic possibilities are withheld from them. Currently, little clinical drugs research in children is being carried out, but this is about to change. By now, European guidelines have been dra... Abstract

The Journal of biological chemistry, Volume 272, Issue 49, 1 1 1997, Pages 31163-31171 Mitogenic signaling of insulin-like growth factor I in MCF-7 human breast cancer cells requires phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase and is independent of mitogen-activated protein kinase. Dufourny B, Alblas J, van Teeffelen HA, van Schaik FM, van der Burg B, Steenbergh PH, Sussenbach JS
Addition of insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) to quiescent breast tumor-derived MCF-7 cells causes stimulation of cyclin D1 synthesis, hyperphosphorylation of the retinoblastoma protein pRb, DNA synthesis, and cell division. All of these effects are independent of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway since none of them is blocked by PD098059, the specific inhibitor of the MAPK activating kinase MEK1. This observation is consistent with the finding that the phorbol ester 12-O-te... Abstract
Statistics in medicine, Volume 16, Issue 24, 1 1 1997, Pages 2829-2841 On the statistical modelling of coronary arteriographic data: dynamics of coronary atherosclerosis related to systemic and focal parameters. REGRESS Study Group. Regression Growth Evaluation Statin Study. Zwinderman AH, Jukema JW, van Boven AJ, Reiber JH
Existing methods to analyse data from repeated arteriographic progression/regression studies are restrictive and do not fully explore the dynamics of coronary artherosclerosis. We present a new approach making a distinction between new occlusions, new lesions, and growth of existing lesions. Random effect models, based on the logistic, the Poisson, and the normal distribution are proposed with correlation depending on distance. The data from the Regression Growth Evaluation Statin Study (REGRESS... Abstract

Pflugers Archiv : European journal of physiology, Volume 435, Issue 1, 1 1 1997, Pages 130-136 The effect of sarcoplasmic reticulum blockade on the force/frequency relationship and systolic contraction patterns in the newborn pig heart. Klautz RJ, Baan J, Teitel DF
We investigated the relationship between heart rate and contractility in seven anaesthetized young piglets by measuring contractility at different atrial pacing rates. To study the origin of this relationship we repeated the measurements after blocking the sarcoplasmic reticulum calcium release channel with ryanodine. We assessed contractility using indices derived from instantaneous left ventricular pressure and volume measured by micromanometric and conductance catheters during rapid inferior... Abstract

Journal of experimental psychology. Human perception and performance, Volume 23, Issue 6, 1 1 1997, Pages 1798-1812 On the statistical independence of color and shape in object identification. van der Velde F, van der Heijden AH
M. J. Nissen (1985) showed that color and shape are processed independently. M. A. Monheit and J. C. Johnston (1994) argued that dependence of color and shape in these experiments was reduced due to random guessing. They conducted 4 experiments in which they attempted to reduce the effect of random guessing. A strong dependence of color and shape reports was observed. In this article the effects that random guessing can have on statistical (in)dependence are analyzed. The authors argue that Monh... Abstract

Proceedings. Biological sciences, Volume 264, Issue 1388, 1 1 1997, Pages 1687-1694 Infanticide risk and the evolution of male-female association in primates. van Schaik CP, Kappeler PM
Year-round association between adult males and females is common in primates, even though internal gestation and lactation predispose males to mate-desertion in the majority of mammals. Because there is little a priori support for alternative explanations, we hypothesized that permanent male-female association in primates serves to reduce the risk of infanticide by strange males whenever females and infants are closely associated. For a phylogenetic test of this hypothesis, we reconstructed the... Abstract

Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, Volume 94, Issue 24, 1 1 1997, Pages 13023-13027 Primate species richness is determined by plant productivity: implications for conservation. Kay RF, Madden RH, Van Schaik C, Higdon D
The explanation of patterns in species richness ranks among the most important tasks of ecology. Current theories emphasize the interaction between historical and geographical factors affecting the size of the regional species pool and of locally acting processes such as competitive exclusion, disturbance, productivity, and seasonality. Local species richness, or alpha diversity, of plants and primary consumers has been claimed to peak in habitats of low and intermediate productivity, which, if... Abstract

Essentially complete (96%) sequence-specific assignments were made for the backbone and side-chain 1H, 13C, and 15N resonances of Fusarium solani pisi cutinase, produced as a 214-residue heterologous protein in Escherichia coli, using heteronuclear NMR techniques. Three structural features were noticed during the assignment. (1) The secondary structure in solution corresponds mostly with the structure from X-ray diffraction, suggesting that both structures are globally similar. (2) The HN of Ala... Abstract

Circulation, Volume 96, Issue 9, 1 1 1997, Pages 2978-2986 Left ventricular pressure-volume relationships before and after cardiomyoplasty in patients with heart failure. Schreuder JJ, van der Veen FH, van der Velde ET, Delahaye F, Alfieri O, Jegaden O, Lorusso R, Jansen JR, Hoeksel SA, Finet G, Volterrani M, Kaulbach HG, Baan J, Wellens HJ
Background: The aim of this study was to elucidate whether beneficial effects of cardiomyoplasty (CMP) in patients with dilated cardiomyopathy are the result of a decrease in existing ventricular dilatation or a prevention of further dilatation. Methods and results: Combined micromanometer-conductance catheters were used to evaluate left ventricular pressure-volume relationships in six patients with dilated cardiomyopathy before and at 6 and 12 months after CMP. Acute changes in preload and afte... Abstract
