Multimedia manual of cardiothoracic surgery : MMCTS, Volume 2021, 25 4 2021 Patch repair in infective native mitral valve endocarditis. Velders BJJ, Tomšič A, Klautz RJM, Palmen M
Infective native mitral valve endocarditis occurs rarely. Mitral valve repair, although surgically challenging, is favored over replacement in the latest European and American guidelines. In this video tutorial, patch repair of the posterior mitral valve leaflet is performed in a 61-year-old patient with endocarditis caused by Streptococcus agalactiae. Abstract

The American journal of cardiology, Volume 162, 24 4 2021, Pages 143-149 Extramitral Valvular Cardiac Involvement in Patients With Significant Secondary Mitral Regurgitation. Singh GK, Namazi F, Hirasawa K, van der Bijl P, van Wijngaarden AL, Vo NM, Stone GW, Ajmone Marsan N, Delgado V, Bax JJ
Patients with secondary mitral regurgitation (SMR) often have extramitral valve cardiac involvement, which can influence the prognosis. SMR can be defined according to groups of extramitral valve cardiac involvement. The prognostic implications of such groups in patients with moderate and severe SMR (significant SMR) are unknown. A total of 325 patients with significant SMR were classified according to the extent of cardiac involvement on echocardiography: left ventricular involvement (group 1),... Abstract

Food security, Volume 13, Issue 6, 18 3 2021, Pages 1467-1496 Multiple pathways towards achieving a living income for different types of smallholder tree-crop commodity farmers. Waarts YR, Janssen V, Aryeetey R, Onduru D, Heriyanto D, Aprillya ST, N'Guessan A, Courbois L, Bakker D, Ingram VJ
Many sources indicate that smallholder tree-crop commodity farmers are poor, but there is a paucity of data on how many of them are poor and the depth of poverty. The living income concept establishes the net annual income required for a household in a place to afford a decent standard of living. Based on datasets on smallholder cocoa and tea farmers in Ghana, Ivory Coast and Kenya and literature, we conclude that a large proportion of such farmers do not have the potential to earn a living inco... Kuneman JH, Singh GK, Hansson NC, Fusini L, Poulsen SH, Fortuni F, Vollema EM, Pedersen ALD, Annoni AD, Nørgaard BL, Pontone G, Ajmone Marsan N, Delgado V, Bax JJ, Knuuti J
Hypo-attenuated leaflet thickening (HALT) of transcatheter aortic valves is detected on multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) and reflects leaflet thrombosis. Whether HALT affects left ventricular (LV) reverse remodeling, a favorable effect of LV afterload reduction after transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is unknown. The aim of this study was to examine the association of HALT after TAVI with LV reverse remodeling. In this multicenter case-control study, patients with HALT on MDC... Abstract

Journal of cardiovascular development and disease, Volume 8, Issue 10, 15 3 2021, Pages 132 Ventricular Septation and Outflow Tract Development in Crocodilians Result in Two Aortas with Bicuspid Semilunar Valves. Poelmann RE, Gittenberger-de Groot AC, Goerdajal C, Grewal N, De Bakker MAG, Richardson MK
Background: The outflow tract of crocodilians resembles that of birds and mammals as ventricular septation is complete. The arterial anatomy, however, presents with a pulmonary trunk originating from the right ventricular cavum, and two aortas originating from either the right or left ventricular cavity. Mixing of blood in crocodilians cannot occur at the ventricular level as in other reptiles but instead takes place at the aortic root level by a shunt, the foramen of Panizza, the opening of whi...
