European heart journal, Volume 11 Suppl B, 1 1 1990, Pages 162-171 Neurohumoral activation during acute myocardial ischaemia. Effects of ACE inhibition. Remme WJ, Look MP, Bootsma M, Kruyssen HA, Verrostte JM, Krauss XH, van Hoogenhuyze DC, Storm CJ
ACE inhibition may be useful in several manifestations of ischaemic heart disease, such as heart failure due to ischaemic cardiomyopathy. Recent evidence suggests that these effects may also be present in normotensive patients with ischaemic heart disease without heart failure. Theoretically, converting-enzyme inhibition, through coronary and systemic vasodilating effects and negative inotropic properties, should have a favourable effect on the myocardial oxygen supply/demand ratio and, hence, a... Cancer research, Volume 50, Issue 5, 1 1 1990, Pages 1488-1494 Protein and messenger RNA levels of plasminogen activators and inhibitors analyzed in 22 human tumor cell lines. Quax PH, van Leeuwen RT, Verspaget HW, Verheijen JH
In 22 human tumor cell lines the regulation of production of plasminogen activators urokinase (u-PA) and tissue-type (t-PA) and their inhibitors PAI-1 and PAI-2 was studied. These four components may determine the net plasminogen activator activity, which is often associated with tumor development and metastatic processes. The amount of specific mRNA and protein produced by the cells was measured for all four components. The frequent finding of t-PA (alone or in combination with u-PA) suggests t... Abstract
Der Urologe. Ausg. A, Volume 29, Issue 2, 1 1 1990, Pages 71-76 [Tumor markers and prognostic parameters in urinary bladder cancer]. Schneider AW, Huland H
Ideal tumor markers for use in the primary diagnosis or follow up of superficial or invasive cancers have not yet been found. Nonetheless, the literature contains references to parameters that are relevant to prognosis and to markers for bladder tumors, and many of these are certainly of value when specific questions are addressed. Urinalysis has been considerably refined and yields information on superficial tumors. Quantitative immunocytology is used to check whether prophylactic treatments ar... Abstract

Comparative biochemistry and physiology. A, Comparative physiology, Volume 95, Issue 1, 1 1 1990, Pages 109-114 Different response of cellular DNA content to cardiac hypertrophy in human and rat heart myocytes. Vliegen HW, Bruschke AV, Van der Laarse A
1. Rat and human heart myocytes adapt to overload-induced hypertrophy differently. 2. Human myocyte nuclei respond with polyploidization and multinucleation, thus increasing the DNA content per myocyte from 20 to 40 pg. As a result, nuclear DNA content per 10,000 microns3 of cell volume decreases from 12 to 10 pg. 3. In rat hearts with aortic constriction nuclear DNA content remains constant (13 pg), and the DNA content per 10,000 microns3 of myocyte volume falls from 9 to 6 pg. 4. We hypothesiz... Abstract

International journal of cancer, Volume 45, Issue 1, 1 1 1990, Pages 16-20 Frequency and degree of aneuploidy in benign and malignant thyroid neoplasms. Schelfhout LJ, Cornelisse CJ, Goslings BM, Hamming JF, Kuipers-Dijkshoorn NJ, van de Velde CJ, Fleuren GJ
The frequency and degree of aneuploidy in 44 benign and 124 malignant thyroid neoplasms were analyzed by DNA flow cytometry. Single aneuploid cell populations were found in 72% of the undifferentiated carcinomas, 64% of the follicular carcinomas, 24% of the papillary carcinomas and in 24% of the follicular adenomas. Multiple aneuploid cell populations were detected in 4% of the papillary and in 36% of the follicular carcinomas but not in undifferentiated carcinomas. A low degree of aneuploidy wa... Abstract

Archives of internal medicine, Volume 150, Issue 1, 1 1 1990, Pages 113-116 The value of fine-needle aspiration biopsy in patients with nodular thyroid disease divided into groups of suspicion of malignant neoplasms on clinical grounds. Hamming JF, Goslings BM, van Steenis GJ, van Ravenswaay Claasen H, Hermans J, van de Velde CJ
The accuracy of clinical diagnosis and fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) was evaluated in 169 patients surgically treated for nodular thyroid disease. Patients were divided into three groups with high, moderate, or low suspicion of malignant neoplasms on clinical grounds without previous knowledge of cytologic or histologic results. Histologic examination revealed an overall malignant neoplasm rate of 23%; the rate was 71%, 14%, and 11% for the groups with high, moderate, and low suspicion, r... Abstract

Lasers in surgery and medicine, Volume 10, Issue 4, 1 1 1990, Pages 363-374 Early and late arterial healing response to catheter-induced laser, thermal, and mechanical wall damage in the rabbit. Oomen A, van Erven L, Vandenbroucke WV, Verdaasdonk RM, Slager CJ, Thomsen SL, Borst C
Pulsed lasers are being promoted for laser angioplasty because of their capacity to ablate obstructions without producing adjacent thermal tissue injury. The implicit assumption that thermal injury to the artery is to be avoided was tested. Thermal lesions were produced in the iliac arteries and aorta of normal rabbits by a) electrical spark erosion, b) the metal laser probe, and c) continuous wave neodymium-yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd-YAG) laser energy through the sapphire contact probe. High-e... Abstract
Der Urologe. Ausg. A, Volume 29, Issue 1, 1 1 1990, Pages 19-22 [Use of electronic data processing at a urologic polyclinic--a program packet for recording and evaluating data of specialized consultations]. Schneider AW, Otto U, Conrad S, Klosterhalfen H
A software package was developed for computerized recording and processing of clinical data in a urological out-patient clinic. In a pilot study this program proved to be useful for the rapid evaluation of all important clinical and laboratory results of patients with renal cell carcinoma, and its use also accelerated the preparation of medical reports. The experience gained in this initial project shows that the application of this newly developed concept of data processing can easily be extend... Abstract

European heart journal, Volume 10 Suppl E, 1 1 1989, Pages 2-8 Experimental electrophysiology and arrhythmogenicity. Anisotropy and ventricular tachycardia. Allessie MA, Schalij MJ, Kirchhof CJ, Boersma L, Huybers M, Hollen J
In a 2-D model of anisotropy, created by freezing the intramural and endocardial layers of a Langendorf perfused rabbit heart, sustained ventricular tachycardia (VT) with a cycle length of 130 ms and an excitable gap of 30 ms could be initiated by rapid pacing. High resolution mapping (256 points) of the thin surviving epicardial layer revealed that the VT was based on epicardial re-entry without the involvement of a gross anatomic obstacle and a central line of functional conduction block orien... European journal of cancer & clinical oncology, Volume 25, Issue 9, 1 1 1989, Pages 1317-1323 Prognosis and morbidity after total thyroidectomy for papillary, follicular and medullary thyroid cancer. Hamming JF, Van de Velde CJ, Goslings BM, Schelfhout LJ, Fleuren GJ, Hermans J, Zwaveling A
The prognosis and the morbidity results after total thyroidectomy are reported for 148 patients with differentiated thyroid cancer. Ninety-two patients (62%) had papillary cancer, 27 (18%) had follicular cancer and 29 (20%) had medullary cancer. In the latter group, 16 patients had no clinical signs of a tumour and underwent total thyroidectomy after elevated calcitonin levels were found in a family screening programme. The mean follow-up period was 9.7 years in the present series. The 5- and 10... Abstract
Der Urologe. Ausg. A, Volume 28, Issue 5, 1 1 1989, Pages 289-291 [Quantitative immunocytology as a marker for indications and follow-up of recurrence prevention of superficial urinary bladder cancers]. Schneider AW, Huland E, Huland H
In 1985, we initiated a prospective clinical trial to evaluate the risk of recurrence for superficial bladder cancer. Up to now, 41 patients subjected to TUR have subsequently been monitored by immunocytology with a monoclonal antibody (mab 486 p) recently developed in our laboratory. Of these patients, 15 (36.6%) remained marker-negative and received no prophylactic therapy. There was only one recurrence (6.7%) in this subset of patients, whereas 10 out of 26 (38.5%) marker-positive patients ha... Abstract

Surgery, gynecology & obstetrics, Volume 169, Issue 2, 1 1 1989, Pages 107-114 Peroperative diagnosis and treatment of metastases to the regional lymph nodes in papillary carcinoma of the thyroid gland. Hamming JF, van de Velde CJ, Goslings BM, Fleuren GJ, Hermans J, Delemarre JF, van Slooten EA
The management of two groups of patients with papillary carcinoma of the thyroid gland (n = 165) was evaluated retrospectively. Total thyroidectomy was the standard procedure in both groups, but the peroperative diagnosis and treatment of metastases to the regional lymph nodes differed. In group 1 (n = 84), only clinically positive lymph nodes were resected, and if residual postoperative 131I uptake was found, an ablation dose of 131I was given. In group 2 (n = 81), all of the tissue in the trac... Abstract

Pathology, research and practice, Volume 184, Issue 6, 1 1 1989, Pages 577-581 Changes in nonmyocyte tissue composition associated with pressure overload of hypertrophic human hearts. Huysman JA, Vliegen HW, Van der Laarse A, Eulderink F
To investigate whether pressure-overloaded left ventricular hypertrophy is associated with changes in tissue composition of left ventricular subendocardial (ENDO) and subepicardial (EPI) myocardium, we studied post-mortem 19 normal hearts, 17 hearts of patients with systemic hypertension, and 5 hearts of patients with aortic stenosis. Coronary artery disease was present in 9 hearts of the hypertension group and all 5 hearts of the aortic stenosis group. By means of a grid-point method, volume pe... Abstract

Molecular microbiology, Volume 3, Issue 5, 1 1 1989, Pages 645-652 Detection and identification of FaeC as a minor component of K88 fibrillae of Escherichia coli. Oudega B, de Graaf M, de Boer L, Bakker D, Vader CE, Mooi FR, de Graaf FK
A tribrid gene containing ompF, faeC, and lacZ sequences was constructed by subcloning a large central segment of the K88ab gene encoding the fibrillar subunit-like protein FaeC into the open reading frame expression vector pORF2. The resulting tribrid protein was isolated and used to raise antibodies against the FaeC protein. These antibodies were then used for the detection and subcellular localization of the FaeC protein in Escherichia coli harbouring the K88ab-encoding plasmid pFM205 or muta... Abstract
Ankara Universitesi Dis Hekimligi Fakultesi dergisi = The Journal of the Dental Faculty of Ankara University, Volume 16, Issue 1, 1 1 1989, Pages 173-177 [Schwannoma (neurilemmoma): a case report]. Yavuz GE, Yilmaz D, Oygür T
Neurilemmoma, neurofibroma and neuroma are benign neoplasms of nerve tissue. These arise from components of the peripheral nerves. They are extremely rare within the jaws. Schwannoma or neurilemmoma may occur along the route of any of the peripheral cranial or sympathetic nerves. The source of origin is thought to be the schwann cells. Its appearance in oral and paraoral regions is not rare. Treatment is surgical and the prognosis is excellent. It has no tendency toward recurrence. Our schwannom... Abstract

Cardiovascular research, Volume 23, Issue 4, 1 1 1989, Pages 308-314 Comparison of myocardial changes between pressure induced hypertrophy and normal growth in the rat heart. van der Laarse A, Vliegen HW, van der Nat KH, Hollaar L, Egas JM, Swier GP, van den Broek AJ
To evaluate differences in tissue composition between hearts with pressure overload hypertrophy and normal hearts of comparable weight, 30 rat hearts with aortic constriction of 4, 10 and 30 days, and nine hearts of sham operated controls were studied. Surgery was performed at age 70 days. Morphometric analysis of myocardial tissue sections revealed (1) myocyte hypertrophy in left ventricular myocardium of hypertrophic hearts was proportional to heart weight, and in normal growth myocyte volume...
