Der Urologe. Ausg. A, Volume 28, Issue 5, 1 1 1989, Pages 289-291 [Quantitative immunocytology as a marker for indications and follow-up of recurrence prevention of superficial urinary bladder cancers]. Schneider AW, Huland E, Huland H
In 1985, we initiated a prospective clinical trial to evaluate the risk of recurrence for superficial bladder cancer. Up to now, 41 patients subjected to TUR have subsequently been monitored by immunocytology with a monoclonal antibody (mab 486 p) recently developed in our laboratory. Of these patients, 15 (36.6%) remained marker-negative and received no prophylactic therapy. There was only one recurrence (6.7%) in this subset of patients, whereas 10 out of 26 (38.5%) marker-positive patients ha... Abstract

Surgery, gynecology & obstetrics, Volume 169, Issue 2, 1 1 1989, Pages 107-114 Peroperative diagnosis and treatment of metastases to the regional lymph nodes in papillary carcinoma of the thyroid gland. Hamming JF, van de Velde CJ, Goslings BM, Fleuren GJ, Hermans J, Delemarre JF, van Slooten EA
The management of two groups of patients with papillary carcinoma of the thyroid gland (n = 165) was evaluated retrospectively. Total thyroidectomy was the standard procedure in both groups, but the peroperative diagnosis and treatment of metastases to the regional lymph nodes differed. In group 1 (n = 84), only clinically positive lymph nodes were resected, and if residual postoperative 131I uptake was found, an ablation dose of 131I was given. In group 2 (n = 81), all of the tissue in the trac... Abstract

Pathology, research and practice, Volume 184, Issue 6, 1 1 1989, Pages 577-581 Changes in nonmyocyte tissue composition associated with pressure overload of hypertrophic human hearts. Huysman JA, Vliegen HW, Van der Laarse A, Eulderink F
To investigate whether pressure-overloaded left ventricular hypertrophy is associated with changes in tissue composition of left ventricular subendocardial (ENDO) and subepicardial (EPI) myocardium, we studied post-mortem 19 normal hearts, 17 hearts of patients with systemic hypertension, and 5 hearts of patients with aortic stenosis. Coronary artery disease was present in 9 hearts of the hypertension group and all 5 hearts of the aortic stenosis group. By means of a grid-point method, volume pe... Abstract

Molecular microbiology, Volume 3, Issue 5, 1 1 1989, Pages 645-652 Detection and identification of FaeC as a minor component of K88 fibrillae of Escherichia coli. Oudega B, de Graaf M, de Boer L, Bakker D, Vader CE, Mooi FR, de Graaf FK
A tribrid gene containing ompF, faeC, and lacZ sequences was constructed by subcloning a large central segment of the K88ab gene encoding the fibrillar subunit-like protein FaeC into the open reading frame expression vector pORF2. The resulting tribrid protein was isolated and used to raise antibodies against the FaeC protein. These antibodies were then used for the detection and subcellular localization of the FaeC protein in Escherichia coli harbouring the K88ab-encoding plasmid pFM205 or muta... Abstract

Neurilemmoma, neurofibroma and neuroma are benign neoplasms of nerve tissue. These arise from components of the peripheral nerves. They are extremely rare within the jaws. Schwannoma or neurilemmoma may occur along the route of any of the peripheral cranial or sympathetic nerves. The source of origin is thought to be the schwann cells. Its appearance in oral and paraoral regions is not rare. Treatment is surgical and the prognosis is excellent. It has no tendency toward recurrence. Our schwannom... Abstract

Cardiovascular research, Volume 23, Issue 4, 1 1 1989, Pages 308-314 Comparison of myocardial changes between pressure induced hypertrophy and normal growth in the rat heart. van der Laarse A, Vliegen HW, van der Nat KH, Hollaar L, Egas JM, Swier GP, van den Broek AJ
To evaluate differences in tissue composition between hearts with pressure overload hypertrophy and normal hearts of comparable weight, 30 rat hearts with aortic constriction of 4, 10 and 30 days, and nine hearts of sham operated controls were studied. Surgery was performed at age 70 days. Morphometric analysis of myocardial tissue sections revealed (1) myocyte hypertrophy in left ventricular myocardium of hypertrophic hearts was proportional to heart weight, and in normal growth myocyte volume... European journal of clinical investigation, Volume 19, Issue 2, 1 1 1989, Pages 192-200 Myocardial (iso)enzyme activities, DNA concentration and nuclear polyploidy in hearts of patients operated upon for congenital heart disease, and in normal and hypertrophic adult human hearts at autopsy. van der Laarse A, Hollaar L, Vliegen HW, Egas JM, Dijkshoorn NJ, Cornelisse CJ, Bogers AJ, Quaegebeur JM
To investigate biochemical characteristics of hypertrophic myocardium of young and adult humans, we analysed myocardial biopsies obtained from 28 mainly young patients undergoing cardiac surgery for congenital heart disease and 41 autopsied hearts from 18 adult normal and 23 hypertrophic human subjects. Myocardial activities of the enzymes creatine kinase and lactate dehydrogenase were independent of age during childhood, but decreased significantly with hypertrophy at adult age. Myocyte nuclei... Ten patients with priapism after self-administered intracavernous papaverine injection for erectile impotence had to be treated as emergencies between September 1985 and February 1988. In half the patients it was possible to achieve penile detumescence by puncture of the corpora cavernosa, injection of 2-5 mg metaraminol or both, but failed in the remainder, requiring the intracavernous injection of 10-30 mg metaraminol in 500 ml physiological saline. Surgical treatment was necessary in one case... Abstract

International journal of cardiac imaging, Volume 4, Issue 2-4, 1 1 1989, Pages 127-133 Laser ablation and the need for intra-arterial imaging. Borst C, Rienks R, Mali WP, van Erven L
In 48 patients with severe claudication due to a total obstruction of the femoropopliteal artery, percutaneous recanalization was attempted with a 2.2 mm diameter rounded sapphire contact probe in conjunction with a continuous wave Nd:YAG laser. In eight patients the contact probe laser catheter took a subintimal course that could not be redressed. Laser recanalization needs high-resolution diagnostic information on the complex anatomy of the obstruction. Intra-arterial ultrasound imaging may pr... Abstract

Pediatric cardiology, Volume 10, Issue 1, 1 1 1989, Pages 1-9 Anatomic correction for transposition of the great arteries: first follow-up (38 patients). Klautz RJ, Ottenkamp J, Quaegebeur JM, Buis-Liem TN, Rohmer J
Between April 1983 and October 1985, 38 consecutive patients with transposition of the great arteries (TGA) underwent anatomic correction. Ages ranged from 1 day to 284 weeks (mean 26.2 weeks). Simple TGA was present in 17 patients, 17 had an associated ventricular septal defect, and the remaining four had a Taussig-Bing anomaly. Hospital mortality was 2 of 38, with 1 late death. Follow-up time varied from 6 to 35 months. Postoperative cardiac catheterization was performed in 34 of the 36 early... Abstract

A clinical Phase II study was performed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of treatment with interferon gamma in patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma. Patients received interferon gamma by two different regimens: 1. 100 micrograms/m2 3x/week i.v. over 4 h every other week--low dose. 2. 500 micrograms/m2 5x/week i.v. over 24 h every other week--high dose--for non-responders to regimen 1. The response rate, duration of response, survival and toxicity in the two regimens were evaluated. T... Abstract

Circulation research, Volume 62, Issue 6, 1 1 1988, Pages 1247-1258 Sensitivity of left ventricular end-systolic pressure-volume relation to type of loading intervention in dogs. Baan J, Van der Velde ET
The influence of different types of loading intervention on the resulting end-systolic pressure-volume relation (ESPVR) of the left ventricle in situ was investigated in anesthetized open-chest dogs. Left ventricular volume was measured by conductance catheter and pressure was measured by tip-micromanometer. Two loading interventions were applied: a pressure intervention (INp) by gradually occluding the descending aorta and a volume intervention (INv) by rapidly infusing 180 ml blood into the ve... The Thoracic and cardiovascular surgeon, Volume 36, Issue 3, 1 1 1988, Pages 137-140 Assessment of hypertrophy in myocardial biopsies taken during correction of congenital heart disease. Bogers AJ, van der Laarse A, Vliegen HW, Quaegebeur JM, Hollaar L, Egas JM, Cornelisse CJ, Rohmer J, Huysmans HA
Myocardial biopsies were obtained from 27 patients undergoing corrective cardiac surgery for congenital heart disease. Normal hearts of 18 autopsied patients were used as reference. The biopsy material was assessed for desoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) concentration and ploidy profile of cell nuclei in order to quantitate myocardial hypertrophy at the time of operation. DNA-concentration decreased significantly with age (r = -0.76; p less than 0.001). Ploidy profile of myocardial nuclei correlated wi... Abstract

A widely accepted model of the left ventricle (LV) consisting of a time-varying elastance and a nonlinear internal resistance was investigated to make inferences about the identifiability of its parameters by means of simulated experiments. We aimed to retrieve maximum elastance (Emax) and dead volume (Vd) by the usual slope method or end-systolic pressure-volume relations (ESPVR) and by model-based parameter identification. The ESPVR deviated increasingly from the assigned values with increasin... Abstract

We calculated the wavelength of the atrial impulse in chronically instrumented conscious dogs by measuring both conduction velocity and refractory period: wavelength = refractory period X conduction velocity. Implantation of multiple stimulating and recording electrodes allowed wavelength determination at four different areas: the right and left parts of Bachmann's bundle and the free walls of the right and left atria. During programmed electrical stimulation, three types of arrhythmias wer... Abstract

The controversy in the management of regional lymph nodes in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer is discussed on the basis of a review of the literature. Since no prospective studies have yet compared limited dissections ('node picking') with more extensive dissections [(modified) radical neck dissection], a retrospective analysis was performed using two patient groups in which patients were managed differently with regard to the preoperative diagnosis and treatment of regional... A retrospective analysis of tumour and patient characteristics was performed in 202 patients with papillary (n = 132) or follicular (n = 70) thyroid carcinoma, in order to identify prognostic factors related to survival. The following facts were found to be unfavourably related to survival: follicular histology, extrathyroidal growth of the primary tumour (stage pT4), regional lymph node involvement (stages pN1-3), presence of distant metastases at diagnosis (stage pM1), male sex (in papillary c...
