BMJ case reports, Volume 2012, 30 5 2012, Pages bcr0120125602 A rare case of portal vein gas: accidental hydrogen peroxide ingestion. Zengin S, Al B, Genç S, Yarbil P, Yilmaz DA, Gulsen MT
Hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) is a colourless and odourless liquid with oxidant characteristics used for various purposes. Whereas in lower concentrations (3%), H(2)O(2) is used as a disinfectant in home cleaning products and wound care, in higher concentrations (35%) it is used in textile and paper industry as a bleaching agent and is diluted for use in lightening hair dyes. Like other caustic substances, direct injuries may develop if H(2)O(2) is swallowed and systemic air embolisms may occur d... Abstract

International wound journal, Volume 10, Issue 3, 28 4 2012, Pages 348-350 Acute mediastinal bleeding during vacuum-assisted closure. Vos RJ, Yilmaz A, Sonker U, Kloppenburg GT
Vacuum-assisted closure is commonly used to treat post-sternotomy mediastinitis. Several studies show improved outcome using vacuum-assisted therapy; however, risks using negative pressure should not be underestimated. We describe two cases of acute mediastinal bleeding during vacuum treatment for post-sternotomy mediastinitis and discuss preventative measurements. Abstract

Resuscitation, Volume 83, Issue 12, 24 4 2012, Pages 1503-1510 Left ventricular diastolic dysfunction during acute myocardial infarction: effect of mild hypothermia. Schwarzl M, Huber S, Maechler H, Steendijk P, Seiler S, Truschnig-Wilders M, Nestelberger T, Pieske BM, Post H
Background: Mild hypothermia (MH) decreases infarct size and mortality in experimental reperfused myocardial infarction, but may potentiate ischaemia-induced left ventricular (LV) diastolic dysfunction. Methods: In anaesthetized pigs (70 ± 2 kg), polystyrol microspheres (45 μm) were infused repeatedly into the left circumflex artery until cardiac power output decreased >40%. Then, pigs were assigned to normothermia (NT, 38.0°C, n=8) or MH (33.0°C, n=8, intravascular cooling) and followed for... Abstract

Karper JC, Ewing MM, Habets KL, de Vries MR, Peters EA, van Oeveren-Rietdijk AM, de Boer HC, Hamming JF, Kuiper J, Kandimalla ER, La Monica N, Jukema JW, Quax PH
Objective: The role of toll-like receptors (TLRs) in vascular remodeling is well established. However, the involvement of the endosomal TLRs is unknown. Here, we study the effect of combined blocking of TLR7 and TLR9 on postinterventional remodeling and accelerated atherosclerosis. Methods and results: In hypercholesterolemic apolipoprotein E*3-Leiden mice, femoral artery cuff placement led to strong increase of TLR7 and TLR9 presence demonstrated by immunohistochemistry. Blocking TLR7/9 with a... Abstract

Clinical pharmacology and therapeutics, Volume 92, Issue 1, 23 4 2012, Pages 62-67 Effects of CYP induction by rifampicin on tamoxifen exposure. Binkhorst L, van Gelder T, Loos WJ, de Jongh FE, Hamberg P, Moghaddam-Helmantel IM, de Jonge E, Jager A, Seynaeve C, van Schaik RH, Verweij J, Mathijssen RH
Tamoxifen undergoes biotransformation into several metabolites, including endoxifen. Differences in metabolism contribute to the interindividual variability in endoxifen concentrations, potentially affecting treatment efficacy. We evaluated the effects of cytochrome P450 (CYP) induction by rifampicin on the exposure levels of tamoxifen and its metabolites and found that coadministration of rifampicin resulted in markedly reduced (up to 86%, P ≤ 0.040) concentrations of tamoxifen and its metaboli... Molecular genetics and metabolism, Volume 107, Issue 1-2, 22 4 2012, Pages 213-221 Intravenous high-dose enzyme replacement therapy with recombinant palmitoyl-protein thioesterase reduces visceral lysosomal storage and modestly prolongs survival in a preclinical mouse model of infantile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis. Hu J, Lu JY, Wong AM, Hynan LS, Birnbaum SG, Yilmaz DS, Streit BM, Lenartowicz EM, Thompson TC, Cooper JD, Hofmann SL
PPT1-related neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (NCL) is a lysosomal storage disorder caused by deficiency in a soluble lysosomal enzyme, palmitoyl-protein thioesterase-1 (PPT1). Enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) has not been previously examined in a preclinical animal model. Homozygous PPT1 knockout mice reproduce the known features of the disease, developing signs of motor dysfunction at 5 months of age and death by around 8 months. In the current study, PPT1 knockout mice were treated with purifie... Abstract

A mathematical model is presented for the increase and decrease of non-inherited antibiotic resistance levels in bacteria. The model is applied to experimental data on E. coli exposed to amoxicillin or tetracyclin in different concentrations. The parameters of the model are estimated using a Monte Carlo Markov Chain method. The model accurately describes build-up and decline of antibiotic resistance caused by physiological adaptations as long as no genetic changes have occurred. The main conclus... Abstract

Neuro-oncology, Volume 14, Issue 7, 15 3 2012, Pages 841-848 Three sensitive assays do not provide evidence for circulating HuD-specific T cells in the blood of patients with paraneoplastic neurological syndromes with anti-Hu antibodies. de Jongste AH, de Graaf MT, Martinuzzi E, van den Broek PD, Kraan J, Lamers CH, Mallone R, Gratama JW, Sillevis Smitt PA
Anti-Hu antibody-associated paraneoplastic neurological syndromes (Hu-PNSs) are severe and often precede the detection of a malignancy, usually small-cell lung cancer. In Hu-PNS, it is hypothesized that neuronal cells are destroyed by T cells targeted against HuD, a protein expressed by small-cell lung cancer cells and neurons. There is only limited evidence for the existence of HuD-specific T cells. To detect these T cells in the blood of Hu-PNS patients, we employed 3 highly sensitive assays t... Abstract

Recent genome-wide association studies have described many loci implicated in type 2 diabetes (T2D) pathophysiology and β-cell dysfunction but have contributed little to the understanding of the genetic basis of insulin resistance. We hypothesized that genes implicated in insulin resistance pathways might be uncovered by accounting for differences in body mass index (BMI) and potential interactions between BMI and genetic variants. We applied a joint meta-analysis approach to test associations w... Abstract

Journal of human evolution, Volume 63, Issue 1, 10 2 2012, Pages 52-63 Allomaternal care, life history and brain size evolution in mammals. Isler K, van Schaik CP
Humans stand out among the apes by having both an extremely large brain and a relatively high reproductive output, which has been proposed to be a consequence of cooperative breeding. Here, we test for general correlates of allomaternal care in a broad sample of 445 mammal species, by examining life history traits, brain size, and different helping behaviors, such as provisioning, carrying, huddling or protecting the offspring and the mother. As predicted from an energetic-cost perspective, a po... Abstract

Background: Several studies suggested great ape cultures, arguing that human cumulative culture presumably evolved from such a foundation. These focused on conspicuous behaviours, and showed rich geographic variation, which could not be attributed to known ecological or genetic differences. Although geographic variation within call types (accents) has previously been reported for orang-utans and other primate species, we examine geographic variation in the presence/absence of discrete call types...
