Current medical research and opinion, Volume 24, Issue 2, 1 1 2008, Pages 359-364 ApoB/A1 and LDL-C/HDL-C and the prediction of cardiovascular risk in statin-treated patients. Liem AH, van de Woestijne AP, Roeters van Lennep HW, Zwinderman AH, van der Steeg WA, Jukema JW
Background: It is generally accepted that low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) or calculated ratios such as LDL-C to high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (LDL-C/HDL-C) are useful predictors of risk of cardiovascular disease in the primary as well as in the secondary prevention setting. However, there is accumulating evidence that the ratio of the corresponding apolipoproteins (apoB/A1) might be superior in some populations. Little is known with regard to the prognostic significanc... Abstract

Cyberpsychology & behavior : the impact of the Internet, multimedia and virtual reality on behavior and society, Volume 11, Issue 1, 1 1 2008, Pages 103-106 Virtual augmented exercise gaming for older adults. Van Schaik P, Blake J, Pernet F, Spears I, Fencott C
This paper details the design, development, and testing of virtual augmented exercise (VAE) gaming for older adults. Three versions of an underwater VAE environment were tested with a sample of 22 healthy adults aged 50 or over. Participants strongly preferred VAE to traditional physical exercise, and adherence rate was 100%. The findings suggest that VAE with puzzles changes or negates the expected negative associations among exercise outcomes. Fitness level was not associated with performance... Abstract
Nederlands tijdschrift voor geneeskunde, Volume 152, Issue 6, 1 1 2008, Pages 297-301 [Differential diagnosis in patients with suspected anoxic-ischaemic coma]. van der Jagt M, Bosman RJ, van Schaik IN, van der Bilt IA, Dekker LR, Zandstra DF
Three case studies illustrate that suspected anoxic-ischaemic coma often requires careful differential diagnosis to detect treatable conditions. A 47-year-old man underwent cardiopulmonary resuscitation for ventricular fibrillation caused by myocardial ischaemia. He exhibited rhythmic eyelid movements while in a coma. Epilepsy was suspected, and the patient regained consciousness after being treated with antiepileptic drugs. A 34-year-old man underwent cardiopulmonary resuscitation for multiple... Abstract

The Annals of thoracic surgery, Volume 85, Issue 2, 1 1 2008, Pages 430-6; discussion 436-7 Restrictive mitral annuloplasty cures ischemic mitral regurgitation and heart failure. Braun J, van de Veire NR, Klautz RJ, Versteegh MI, Holman ER, Westenberg JJ, Boersma E, van der Wall EE, Bax JJ, Dion RA
Background: Restrictive mitral annuloplasty with revascularization is considered the best approach to ischemic mitral regurgitation with heart failure, but late results are controversial. We report late outcome in relation to preoperative left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (LVEDD) cutoff values, previously identified to predict intermediate-term left ventricular reverse remodeling. Methods: One hundred consecutive ischemic mitral regurgitation patients underwent restrictive mitral annulopla... Abstract

Journal of nanoscience and nanotechnology, Volume 8, Issue 2, 1 1 2008, Pages 635-639 Atomistic structure simulation of silicon nanocrystals driven with suboxide penalty energies. Yilmaz DE, Bulutay C, Cagin T
The structural control of silicon nanocrystals embedded in amorphous oxide is currently an important technological problem. In this work, an approach is presented to simulate the structural behavior of silicon nanocrystals embedded in amorphous oxide matrix based on simple valence force fields as described by Keating-type potentials. After generating an amorphous silicon-rich-oxide, its evolution towards an embedded nanocrystal is driven by the oxygen diffusion process implemented in the form of... Abstract

Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, Volume 105, Issue 5, 30 5 2008, Pages 1692-1697 Interaction between HMGA1a and the origin recognition complex creates site-specific replication origins. Thomae AW, Pich D, Brocher J, Spindler MP, Berens C, Hock R, Hammerschmidt W, Schepers A
In all eukaryotic cells, origins of DNA replication are characterized by the binding of the origin recognition complex (ORC). How ORC is positioned to sites where replication initiates is unknown, because metazoan ORC binds DNA without apparent sequence specificity. Thus, additional factors might be involved in ORC positioning. Our experiments indicate that a family member of the high-mobility group proteins, HMGA1a, can specifically target ORC to DNA. Coimmunoprecipitations and imaging studies... Abstract

Journal of affective disorders, Volume 110, Issue 1-2, 30 5 2008, Pages 27-35 Depressive symptoms in peripheral arterial disease: a follow-up study on prevalence, stability, and risk factors. Smolderen KG, Aquarius AE, de Vries J, Smith OR, Hamming JF, Denollet J
Background: Depressive symptoms are associated with poor prognosis in coronary artery disease, but there is a paucity of research on these symptoms in peripheral arterial disease (PAD). We examined the clinical correlates and 18-month course of depressive symptoms in PAD patients. Methods: 166 patients with symptomatic lower-extremity PAD (39% women; M age=64.9 +/- 10 years) completed the 10-item Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression scale. A score > or =4 indicates clinically relevan... Abstract

British journal of clinical pharmacology, Volume 65, Issue 5, 30 5 2008, Pages 752-760 Effect of CYP2C19*2 and *17 mutations on pharmacodynamics and kinetics of proton pump inhibitors in Caucasians. Hunfeld NG, Mathot RA, Touw DJ, van Schaik RH, Mulder PG, Franck PF, Kuipers EJ, Geus WP
What is already known about this subject: The influence of CYP2C19 on the kinetics and dynamics of omeprazole, lansoprazole and rabeprazole has been studied in Japanese subjects. * It has been suggested that subjects with *1/*1 genotype might need stronger acid suppression than *1/*2 and *2/*2 subjects. This suggestion comes from data in Japanese subjects and has not been confirmed in Caucasians. * Furthermore, a novel CYP2C19 mutation, *17, which mainly occurs in Caucasians has been discovered.... Stem cells (Dayton, Ohio), Volume 26, Issue 4, 17 3 2008, Pages 1083-1093 Forced myocardin expression enhances the therapeutic effect of human mesenchymal stem cells after transplantation in ischemic mouse hearts. Grauss RW, van Tuyn J, Steendijk P, Winter EM, Pijnappels DA, Hogers B, Gittenberger-De Groot AC, van der Geest R, van der Laarse A, de Vries AA, Schalij MJ, Atsma DE
Human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) have only a limited differentiation potential toward cardiomyocytes. Forced expression of the cardiomyogenic transcription factor myocardin may stimulate hMSCs to acquire a cardiomyogenic phenotype, thereby improving their possible therapeutic potential. hMSCs were transduced with green fluorescent protein (GFP) and myocardin (hMSC(myoc)) or GFP and empty vector (hMSC). After coronary ligation in immune-compromised NOD/scid mice, hMSC(myoc) (n = 10), hMSC (n... Abstract

Marcassa C, Bax JJ, Bengel F, Hesse B, Petersen CL, Reyes E, Underwood R, European Council of Nuclear Cardiology (ECNC), European Society of Cardiology Working Group 5 (Nuclear Cardiology and Cardiac CT), European Association of Nuclear Medicine Cardiovascular Committee
Mortality rates due to coronary artery disease (CAD) have declined in recent years as result of improved prevention, diagnosis, and management. Nonetheless, CAD remains the leading cause of death worldwide with most casualties expected to occur in developing nations. Myocardial perfusion scintigraphy (MPS) provides a highly cost-effective tool for the early detection of obstructive CAD in symptomatic individuals and contributes substantially to stratification of patients according to their risk... Clinical and vaccine immunology : CVI, Volume 15, Issue 3, 16 3 2008, Pages 522-533 Rational combination of peptides derived from different Mycobacterium leprae proteins improves sensitivity for immunodiagnosis of M. leprae infection. Geluk A, van der Ploeg J, Teles RO, Franken KL, Prins C, Drijfhout JW, Sarno EN, Sampaio EP, Ottenhoff TH
The stable incidence of new leprosy cases suggests that transmission of infection is continuing despite the worldwide implementation of multidrug therapy programs. Highly specific tools are required to accurately diagnose asymptomatic and early stage Mycobacterium leprae infections which are the likely sources of transmission and cannot be identified by using the detection of antibodies against phenolic glycolipid I. One of the hurdles hampering T-cell-based diagnostic tests is that M. leprae an... Abstract

Current pharmaceutical design, Volume 14, Issue 12, 1 1 2008, Pages 1205-1216 Bridging innate immunity and myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury: the search for therapeutic targets. Arslan F, de Kleijn DP, Timmers L, Doevendans PA, Pasterkamp G
Myocardial infarction necessitates new therapeutic interventions, since it still results in high morbidity and mortality worldwide. Reperfusion therapy itself results in (acceleration of) apoptosis, called myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. For several decades it is known that the inflammatory response during reperfusion is the major cause of myocardial I/R injury. Therapeutic options are limited by lack of (detailed) understanding of intra- and intercellular mechanisms between inflam... Abstract
