Background: The application of previous magnetic resonance (MR) angiography techniques has enabled noninvasive differentiation between patent and occluded coronary artery bypass grafts. However, the detection of graft stenosis remains difficult. The purpose of our study was to determine the accuracy of high-resolution navigator-gated 3-dimensional (3-D) MR angiography in detecting vein graft disease. Methods and Results- MR angiography was performed in addition to coronary angiography with quant... Abstract

Current pharmaceutical design, Volume 8, Issue 15, 1 1 2002, Pages 1391-1403 Beta-glucuronidase-mediated drug release. de Graaf M, Boven E, Scheeren HW, Haisma HJ, Pinedo HM
The selective activation of a relatively non-toxic prodrug by an enzyme present only in the tumour should enhance the drug concentration at the tumour site and result in a better anti-tumour effect and a reduction in systemic toxicity as compared to conventional chemotherapy. beta-Glucuronidase is such an enzyme. It is normally expressed in the lysosomes of cells. In larger tumours, however, high levels of the enzyme are present in necrotic areas. Several glucuronide prodrugs have been synthesis... Abstract

Journal of cardiovascular pharmacology, Volume 39, Issue 1, 1 1 2002, Pages 61-72 Calcium sensitizer EMD 57033, but not the beta1-adrenoreceptor agonist dobutamine, increases mechanical efficiency in stunned myocardium. Trines SA, Smits CA, van der Moer J, Slager CJ, Verdouw PD, Krams R
External work, efficiency of energy transfer (EET), and mechanical efficiency (defined as the ratio of external work over myocardial oxygen consumption (MVO2) are reduced in stunned myocardium. We therefore evaluated how inotropic stimulation by dobutamine and the calcium sensitizer EMD 57033 affected the regional stress-strain relationship as, from which contractility (E(es)), external work at the working point (EWwp), maximal external work (EWmax), EETwp (%), and EETmax are determined. Journal of cardiovascular magnetic resonance : official journal of the Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance, Volume 4, Issue 3, 1 1 2002, Pages 353-357 Noninvasive and invasive evaluation of noncompaction cardiomyopathy. Bax JJ, Atsma DE, Lamb HJ, Rebergen SA, Bootsma M, Voogd PJ, Somer S, Schalij MJ, de Roos A, van der Wall EE
Noncompaction cardiomyopathy is a recently described rare congenital cardiomyopathy; patients can be asymptomatic or develop diastolic and/or systolic left ventricular dysfunction with heart failure, systemic emboli or ventricular arrhythmias. Long-term prognosis is poor. Currently, diagnosis is based on findings on 2D echocardiography; in the current case report we demonstrate the use of MRI to diagnose noncompaction cardiomyopathy. Studies in health technology and informatics, Volume 88, 1 1 2002, Pages 81-85 3D back shape in normal young adults. Saltikov JA, Van Schaik P, Bell JA, Warren JG, Wojcik AS, Papastefanou SL
In today's climate of evidence based medicine, there is an increasing emphasis on objective assessment to monitor treatment effectiveness. Although spinal posture and back shape are commonly assessed by clinicians, current practice is based on subjective findings and unreliable objective tools. Numerous management protocols aim to improve both posture and shape, however data related to normal back shape is quite scarce. The aim of this study was to investigate normal back shape in young adu... Abstract

Studies in health technology and informatics, Volume 88, 1 1 2002, Pages 100-104 3-D measurement of posture and back shape using a low cost, portable system--a reliability study. Warren JG, Bettany-Saltikov J, Van Schaik P, Papastefanou SL
The reliability and accuracy in the measurement of landmark points using a 3-D digitizer on a static back phantom are reported. The results show the systems clinical reliability as a low cost, portable and flexible method for recording back posture. Consistent results are demonstrated for a single measurer and good agreement was found between two measurers. Few intrinsic errors were found in the devices performance. Abstract

Folia primatologica; international journal of primatology, Volume 73, Issue 1, 1 1 2002, Pages 1-20 The social organisation of a population of Sumatran orang-utans. Singleton I, van Schaik CP
Female orang-utans in a Sumatran swamp forest live in large, but stable, and widely overlapping home ranges. They preferentially associate with some of their female neighbours, possibly relatives, to form socially distinct clusters that also experience reproductive synchrony. Sexually mature males range more widely than females, but among them the dominant adult male has a relatively more limited range. His ranging and that of the subadult males reflect the local abundance of sexually attractive... Abstract

American journal of physiology. Heart and circulatory physiology, Volume 281, Issue 6, 1 1 2001, Pages H2697-704 Biventricular systolic function in young lambs subject to chronic systemic right ventricular pressure overload. Leeuwenburgh BP, Helbing WA, Steendijk P, Schoof PH, Baan J
In various clinical situations of congenital heart disease, the right ventricle (RV) is subject to a chronic systemic pressure overload which affects biventricular function and may progress to the development of RV failure. Young lambs (2-3 wk old) underwent adjustable pulmonary artery banding (PAB) at systemic (aortic) level for 8 wk. Biventricular function was determined by using load-independent indexes of global ventricular contractile performance by the end-systolic pressure-volume relation... Abstract

Proceedings. Biological sciences, Volume 268, Issue 1484, 1 1 2001, Pages 2445-2451 Loss of oestrus, concealed ovulation and paternity confusion in free-ranging Hanuman langurs. Heistermann M, Ziegler T, van Schaik CP, Launhardt K, Winkler P, Hodges JK
Ovarian cycles in catarrhine primates are uniquely characterized by prolonged periods of sexual activity in which the timings of ovulation and copulation do not necessarily correspond. According to current hypotheses of primate social evolution, extended sexuality in multi-male groups might represent part of a female strategy to confuse paternity in order to reduce the risk of infanticide by males. We test this hypothesis by examining mating behaviour in relation to timing of ovulation and pater... Abstract

Netherlands heart journal : monthly journal of the Netherlands Society of Cardiology and the Netherlands Heart Foundation, Volume 9, Issue 8, 1 1 2001, Pages 343-345 Safety of statins in the new millennium. Jukema JW, Lansberg PJ
Looking at the world today and six months ago in retrospect, it becomes clear that things have changed dramatically. Not only are global economic forecasts in turmoil, other certainties have also been proven to be not as steadfast as we had hoped and expected. Safety in the world has gained a different perspective since the assault on the twin towers of the World Trade Centre in New York and the Pentagon. The safety of medicine and especially statins has also become an issue since the withdrawal... Abstract

Roest AA, Kunz P, Helbing WA, Lamb HJ, Vliegen HW, van den Aardweg JG, Ruitenberg Q, de Roos A, van der Wall EE
After atrial correction of transposition of the great arteries (TGA), dysfunction of the systemic right ventricle at rest and during exercise has been reported. Information on changes in systemic right ventricular function during recovery from exercise is lacking. This study evaluates cardiac recovery from supine exercise using magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in patients with asymptomatic TGA after atrial correction. Flow in the ascending aorta, representing stroke volume of the systemic ventric... Abstract

The International journal of artificial organs, Volume 24, Issue 11, 1 1 2001, Pages 821-831 Enhancing filtration rates by the use of blood flow around the capillaries of plasmafilters: an in vitro study. Unger JK, Janssen VR, Kashefi A, Haltern C, Klosterhalfen B, Fischer Y, Gressner AM, Rossaint R
As the low clearance rate of plasmaseparation limits its use in the treatment of patients suffering from liver failure, sepsis or MOF, we intend to develop strategies for a plasmaseparation unit which increases plasmafiltration rates. Our first question focused on whether commercially available plasmaseparation filters, and in particular their membranes, are suitable for the inversion of blood and plasma compartments. This experimental study was performed using in vitro systems. Commercially ava... Abstract

Human gene therapy, Volume 12, Issue 16, 1 1 2001, Pages 1989-2005 Highly efficient targeted transduction of undifferentiated human hematopoietic cells by adenoviral vectors displaying fiber knobs of subgroup B. Knaän-Shanzer S, Van Der Velde I, Havenga MJ, Lemckert AA, De Vries AA, Valerio D
Human hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) are poorly transduced by vectors based on adenovirus serotype 5 (Ad5). This is primarily due to the paucity of the coxsackievirus-Ad receptor on these cells. In an attempt to change the tropism of Ad5, we constructed a series of chimeric E1-deleted Ad5 vectors in which the shaft and knob of the capsid fibers were exchanged with those of other Ad serotypes. In all these vectors, the Ad E1 region was replaced by an expression cassette containing the cytomegalo... Abstract

Molecular biology of the cell, Volume 12, Issue 11, 1 1 2001, Pages 3680-3689 Basic domains target protein subunits of the RNase MRP complex to the nucleolus independently of complex association. van Eenennaam H, van der Heijden A, Janssen RJ, van Venrooij WJ, Pruijn GJ
The RNase MRP and RNase P ribonucleoprotein particles both function as endoribonucleases, have a similar RNA component, and share several protein subunits. RNase MRP has been implicated in pre-rRNA processing and mitochondrial DNA replication, whereas RNase P functions in pre-tRNA processing. Both RNase MRP and RNase P accumulate in the nucleolus of eukaryotic cells. In this report we show that for three protein subunits of the RNase MRP complex (hPop1, hPop4, and Rpp38) basic domains are respon... Abstract
