American journal of translational research, Volume 10, Issue 3, 15 3 2018, Pages 816-826 No indications for platelet activation in acute clinical myocardial or renal ischemia/reperfusion injury. Kortekaas KA, de Vries DK, Roest M, Reinders ME, van der Veer EP, Klautz RJ, de Groot PG, Schaapherder AF, Lindeman JH
The pathophysiology of ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury is complex and poorly understood. Animal studies imply platelet activation as an initiator of the inflammatory response upon reperfusion. However, it remains unclear whether and how these results translate to clinical I/R. This study evaluates putative platelet activation in the context of two forms of clinical I/R (heart valve surgery with aortic-cross clamping, n = 39 and kidney transplantation, n = 34). The technique of sequential selec... Abstract

Circulation research, Volume 122, Issue 12, 15 3 2018, Pages 1648-1660 The COMMD Family Regulates Plasma LDL Levels and Attenuates Atherosclerosis Through Stabilizing the CCC Complex in Endosomal LDLR Trafficking. Fedoseienko A, Wijers M, Wolters JC, Dekker D, Smit M, Huijkman N, Kloosterhuis N, Klug H, Schepers A, Willems van Dijk K, Levels JHM, Billadeau DD, Hofker MH, van Deursen J, Westerterp M, Burstein E, Kuivenhoven JA, van de Sluis B
Rationale: COMMD (copper metabolism MURR1 domain)-containing proteins are a part of the CCC (COMMD-CCDC22 [coiled-coil domain containing 22]-CCDC93 [coiled-coil domain containing 93]) complex facilitating endosomal trafficking of cell surface receptors. Hepatic COMMD1 inactivation decreases CCDC22 and CCDC93 protein levels, impairs the recycling of the LDLR (low-density lipoprotein receptor), and increases plasma low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels in mice. However, whether any of the oth... Abstract

Stroke has multiple etiologies, but the underlying genes and pathways are largely unknown. We conducted a multiancestry genome-wide-association meta-analysis in 521,612 individuals (67,162 cases and 454,450 controls) and discovered 22 new stroke risk loci, bringing the total to 32. We further found shared genetic variation with related vascular traits, including blood pressure, cardiac traits, and venous thromboembolism, at individual loci (n = 18), and using genetic risk scores and linkage-dise... Background: Patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) have high risk for sudden cardiac death (SCD) and may benefit from implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs). However, the risk for ICD-related complications is also high in this population. Therefore, there is an unmet need for accurate risk stratification tools to identify patients with CKD at risk for ventricular arrhythmias (VAs), who may benefit from ICD implantation. The aim of this hypothesis-generating study was to inve... Abstract

Transplant international : official journal of the European Society for Organ Transplantation, Volume 31, Issue 6, 5 1 2018, Pages 610-619 The center effect in liver transplantation in the Eurotransplant region: a retrospective database analysis. Blok JJ, de Boer JD, Putter H, Rogiers X, Guba MO, Strassburg CP, Samuel U, van Hoek B, Hamming JF, Braat AE, Eurotransplant Liver Intestine Advisory Committee
Apart from donor and recipient risk factors, the effect of center-related factors has significant impact on graft survival after liver transplantation (LT). To investigate this effect in Eurotransplant, a retrospective database analysis was performed, including all LT's in adult recipients (≥18 years) in the Eurotransplant region from 1.1.2007 until 31.12.2013. Additionally, a survey was sent out to all transplant centers requesting information on surgeons' experience and exposure. In... Abstract

Seminars in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery. Pediatric cardiac surgery annual, Volume 21, 1 1 2018, Pages 58-63 Nikaidoh vs Réparation à l'Etage Ventriculaire vs Rastelli. Hazekamp MG, Nevvazhay T, Sojak V
This review describes the different surgical options for transposition of the great arteries, ventricular septal defect (VSD), and left ventricular outflow tract obstruction. When the pulmonary valve can be used, an arterial switch operation with VSD closure and resection of pulmonary stenosis may be possible. This is not the scope of our review: we focus on the Rastelli, REV (Réparation à l'Etage Ventriculaire), and Nikaidoh techniques, and we also describe the "en bloc rotation"... Abstract

Cancer cells and embryonic tissues share a number of cellular and molecular properties, suggesting that induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) may be harnessed to elicit anti-tumor responses in cancer vaccines. RNA sequencing revealed that human and murine iPSCs express tumor-associated antigens, and we show here a proof of principle for using irradiated iPSCs in autologous anti-tumor vaccines. In a prophylactic setting, iPSC vaccines prevent tumor growth in syngeneic murine breast cancer, mesot... Abstract

While tuberculosis (TB) represents a significant disease burden worldwide, low-incidence countries strive to reach the WHO target of pre-elimination by 2035. Screening for TB in immigrants is an important component of the strategy to reduce the TB burden in low-incidence settings. An important option is the screening and preventive treatment of latent TB infection (LTBI). Whether this policy is worthwhile depends on the extent of transmission within the country, and introduction of new cases thr... Abstract
