Journal of immunology (Baltimore, Md. : 1950), Volume 186, Issue 9, 18 3 2011, Pages 5236-5243 Anthrax lethal factor activates K(+) channels to induce IL-1β secretion in macrophages. Thomas J, Epshtein Y, Chopra A, Ordog B, Ghassemi M, Christman JW, Nattel S, Cook JL, Levitan I
Anthrax lethal toxin (LeTx) is a virulence factor of Bacilillus anthracis that is a bivalent toxin, containing lethal factor (LF) and protective Ag proteins, which causes cytotoxicity and altered macrophage function. LeTx exposure results in early K(+) efflux from macrophages associated with caspase-1 activation and increased IL-1β release. The mechanism of this toxin-induced K(+) efflux is unknown. The goals of the current study were to determine whether LeTx-induced K(+) efflux from macrophage... Abstract

Journal of neurology, Volume 258, Issue 8, 12 2 2011, Pages 1507-1512 Addition of serum-containing medium to cerebrospinal fluid prevents cellular loss over time. de Graaf MT, van den Broek PD, Kraan J, Luitwieler RL, van den Bent MJ, Boonstra JG, Schmitz PI, Gratama JW, Sillevis Smitt PA
Immediately after sampling, leukocyte counts in native cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) start to decrease rapidly. As the time lapse between CSF collection to analysis is not routinely registered, the clinical significance of decreasing cell counts in native CSF is not known. Earlier data suggest that addition of serum-containing medium to CSF directly after sampling prevents this rapid decrease in leukocyte counts and, thus, may improve the accuracy of CSF cell counting and cell characterization. Here... Abstract

Circulation research, Volume 108, Issue 9, 10 2 2011, Pages 1093-1101 Lack of primary cilia primes shear-induced endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition. Egorova AD, Khedoe PP, Goumans MJ, Yoder BK, Nauli SM, ten Dijke P, Poelmann RE, Hierck BP
Rationale: Primary cilia are cellular protrusions that serve as mechanosensors for fluid flow. In endothelial cells (ECs), they function by transducing local blood flow information into functional responses, such as nitric oxide production and initiation of gene expression. Cilia are present on ECs in areas of low or disturbed flow and absent in areas of high flow. In the embryonic heart, high-flow regime applies to the endocardial cushion area, and the absence of cilia here coincides with the p... Abstract

Hutteman M, Mieog JS, van der Vorst JR, Liefers GJ, Putter H, Löwik CW, Frangioni JV, van de Velde CJ, Vahrmeijer AL
Near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence imaging has the potential to improve sentinel lymph node (SLN) mapping in breast cancer. Indocyanine green (ICG) is currently the only clinically available fluorophore that can be used for SLN mapping. Preclinically, ICG adsorbed to human serum albumin (ICG:HSA) improves its performance as a lymphatic tracer in some anatomical sites. The benefit of ICG:HSA for SLN mapping of breast cancer has not yet been assessed in a clinical trial. We performed a double-blind,... Abstract
