Psychological research, Volume 56, Issue 1, 1 1 1993, Pages 44-58 The role of position in object selection in vision. van der Heijden AH
Within contemporary visual-information-processing psychology, two classes of selective-attention theories can be distinguished: position-not-special theories and position-special theories. The position-not-special theories postulate that attentional selection by colour, by form, and by position are equivalent selective operations. The position-special theories assume that selection by position is more basic or direct than selection by colour or by form. Examples of both types of theory are brief... Abstract

Arteriosclerosis and thrombosis : a journal of vascular biology, Volume 13, Issue 1, 1 1 1993, Pages 78-83 Potential of 99mTc-LDLs labeled by two different methods for scintigraphic detection of experimental atherosclerosis in rabbits. Atsma DE, Feitsma RI, Camps J, van't Hooft FM, van der Wall EE, Nieuwenhuizen W, Pauwels EK
In this study we evaluated two different 99mTc-labeling techniques to produce 99mTc-low density lipoprotein (99mTc-LDL) suitable for the scintigraphic delineation of experimental atherosclerotic lesions. The two methods are 1) a procedure that uses stannous chloride and sodium borohydride (borohydride method) and 2) a procedure that uses sodium dithionite as a reducing agent and that has been successfully applied in previous scintigraphic atherosclerosis detection (dithionite method). 99mTc-LDL... Gynecologic and obstetric investigation, Volume 36, Issue 3, 1 1 1993, Pages 129-135 Advancement of meiotic resumption in graafian follicles reduces fertility in the rat. Mattheij JA, Swarts JJ, van der Heijden AJ, van Helvoort AL, Kusters IC
Fertile life of oocytes is usually considered to be related to ovulation time. In the present study, fertile life of rat oocytes was studied in relation to resumption of meiosis. In pro-oestrus, meiotic resumption without concomitant ovulation was induced in most graafian follicles by injection of a small amount of LH or FSH followed by Nembutal. These follicles either ovulated or developed into luteinized unruptured follicles if Ovalyse (a GnRH analogue) was given 8 h after LH or FSH. In subseq... Abstract

Journal of virology, Volume 66, Issue 11, 1 1 1992, Pages 6294-6303 Structural proteins of equine arteritis virus. de Vries AA, Chirnside ED, Horzinek MC, Rottier PJ
We have recently shown that the genome of equine arteritis virus (EAV) contains seven open reading frames (ORFs). We now present data on the structural proteins of EAV and the assignment of their respective genes. Virions are composed of a 14-kDa nucleocapsid protein (N) and three membrane proteins designated M, GS, and GL. M is an unglycosylated protein of 16 kDa, and GS and GL are N-glycosylated proteins of 25 and 30 to 42 kDa, respectively. The broad size distribution of GL results from heter... Abstract

European heart journal, Volume 13 Suppl E, 1 1 1992, Pages 28-34 Single and dual excitation of the conductance-volume catheter analysed in a spheroidal mathematical model of the canine left ventricle. Steendijk P, van der Velde ET, Baan J
The conductance method employs a multi-electrode catheter to generate an electrical field and measure intracavitary segmental conductances. Left ventricular (LV) volumes are calculated using an algorithm which assumes the electrical field to be homogeneous. This assumption may be violated leading to a non-linear relation between conductance-derived and true volumes. In addition, this relation may vary between segments. A new method is introduced which uses a more homogeneous field. Volume estima... Abstract

The American journal of physiology, Volume 263, Issue 5 Pt 2, 1 1 1992, Pages H1466-78 Anisotropic conduction and reentry in perfused epicardium of rabbit left ventricle. Schalij MJ, Lammers WJ, Rensma PL, Allessie MA
An experimental model of anisotropy was developed, consisting of a thin layer (1 mm) of perfused ventricular epicardium created by cryodestruction of the interventricular septum and the inner four-fifths of the free wall of the left ventricle. The electrophysiological properties of the 1-mm-thick surviving layer were the same as before freezing. Epicardial conduction was mapped with a 192-fold mapping electrode (spatial resolution 1 mm). In the intact ventricle transverse conduction was interrup... Abstract

European heart journal, Volume 13 Suppl E, 1 1 1992, Pages 2-6 Ventricular pressure-volume relations in vivo. Baan J, van der Velde ET, Steendijk P
A number of fundamental mechanical properties of cardiac muscle as well as of the total ventricle are discussed. These include: Starling's law, shortening deactivation, homeometric autoregulation, and so-called hyperactivation associated with a small amount of ejection. Whenever appropriate, muscle properties are related to those of the intact ventricle. The phenomenon of load-dependence of the end-systolic pressure-volume relationship (ESPVR) receives particular attention and is placed wit... Abstract

Journal of vascular research, Volume 29, Issue 6, 1 1 1992, Pages 426-434 Thrombogenicity and intimal hyperplasia after conventional and thermal balloon dilation in normal rabbit iliac arteries. van Erven L, Velema E, Bos AN, Post MJ, Borst C
Acute occlusion and restenosis are the major complications of percutaneous transluminal coronary balloon angioplasty. Application of heat during balloon dilation was postulated to reduce these complications. We evaluated thrombogenicity and intimal hyperplasia of normal rabbit iliac arteries after conventional (37 degrees C) and thermal balloon dilation. Thermal dilation was performed with a radio-frequency-heated balloon, provided with three thermocouples attached to the inside of the balloon s... Abstract

European heart journal, Volume 13 Suppl E, 1 1 1992, Pages 15-21 Left ventricular segmental volume by conductance catheter and Cine-CT. van der Velde ET, van Dijk AD, Steendijk P, Diethelm L, Chagas T, Lipton MJ, Glanz SA, Baan J
The ability of the conductance catheter method to measure left ventricular segmental and total volume was evaluated by comparison with the Cine-CT technique. In the seven dogs studied, 19 conductance catheter and simultaneous Cine-CT runs were obtained. High correlation coefficients were found for total volume and segmental volumes, except in the basal segment. However, in most cases there was a significant variability in slope and intercept between animals. Both methods are promising tools for... Abstract

Der Urologe. Ausg. A, Volume 31, Issue 6, 1 1 1992, Pages 378-383 [Obstructive uropathy after kidney transplantation. Experiences with endourologic incision of ureteral stenoses]. Schneider AW, Meyer-Moldenhauer WH, Conrad S, Otto U, Klosterhalfen H
Between 1985 und March 1991 we have managed 8 upper urinary tract obstructions in kidney transplants using an endourological approach. After a graft rejection was excluded an obstruction was initially diagnosed by nephrosonography and further confirmed by IVP or antegrade pyelography. To investigate the urodynamic relevance of the stenosis, all patients underwent preoperative diuretic isotope renography. In all cases a percutaneous pyelostomy was done to preserve renal function. 7 of these 8 pat... Abstract

European heart journal, Volume 13 Suppl E, 1 1 1992, Pages 40-46 The end-systolic pressure-volume relationship in young animals using the conductance technique. Teitel DF, Klautz RJ, Cassidy SC, Steendijk P, van der Velde ET, van Bel F, Baan J
Evaluation of ventricular performance by the end-systolic pressure-volume relationship (ESPVR) has been extensively performed in the adult heart using the conductance technique. We undertook this study to validate the conductance technique and to generate ESPVRs in the small heart. To validate the technique, we simultaneously measured left ventricular volume by the conductance catheter and biplane cineangiography in nine piglets during changes in volume and contractility. Raw conductance volumes... Abstract

The Journal of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery, Volume 104, Issue 4, 1 1 1992, Pages 1053-1059 Mid-infrared pulsed laser ablation of the arterial wall. Mechanical origin of "acoustic" wall damage and its effect on wall healing. van Erven L, van Leeuwen TG, Post MJ, van der Veen MJ, Velema E, Borst C
Pulsed mid-infrared lasers are an alternative to excimer lasers for transluminal angioplasty. The mid-infrared lasers, however, were reported to produce "acoustic" wall damage that might impair the immediate and long-term results. To study the immediate and long-term effects on the arterial wall, 184 craters (1 mm diameter and 1 mm depth) were produced perpendicular to the intimal lining in the thoracic aortas of pigs. Three types of craters were evaluated: Ho-YSGG laser-induced (lambd... Abstract

Circulation research, Volume 71, Issue 2, 1 1 1992, Pages 385-392 Cultured rat aortic vascular smooth muscle cells digest naturally produced extracellular matrix. Involvement of plasminogen-dependent and plasminogen-independent pathways. Sperti G, van Leeuwen RT, Quax PH, Maseri A, Kluft C
Vascular smooth muscle (VSM) cell migration and proliferation play a major role in the development of atherosclerotic lesions, graft occlusion, and restenosis after angioplasty. Cell migration implies the digestion of the surrounding extracellular matrix. Cell-associated proteolysis has been extensively studied in neoplastic and inflammatory cells, but very little is known about the proteolytic properties of VSM. We have evaluated the ability of rat cultured VSM cells to solubilize [3H]amino aci... Abstract

Plant foods for human nutrition (Dordrecht, Netherlands), Volume 42, Issue 3, 1 1 1992, Pages 275-284 In vitro enzymatic hydrolysis of protein and protein pattern change of soya and faba beans during germination. Savelkoul FH, Boer H, Tamminga S, Schepers AJ, Elburg L
In addition to technological processes like heat treatment, germination can be an alternative process for the improvement of protein quality of legumes. This was demonstrated by enzymatic protein hydrolysis of flour of germinated faba and soya beans, using a pepsin-pancreatin enzyme system. SDS-PAGE was used to study the changes in protein pattern of these legumes during germination. In addition, the effect of germination on the content of condensed tannins in flour from germinated faba beans an... Abstract

Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Volume 19, Issue 7, 1 1 1992, Pages 1610-1618 Origin of arterial wall dissections induced by pulsed excimer and mid-infrared laser ablation in the pig. van Leeuwen TG, van Erven L, Meertens JH, Motamedi M, Post MJ, Borst C
To study adjacent tissue damage after delivery of holmium, thulium and excimer laser pulses, porcine thoracic aortas were irradiated in vivo. After 3 days, microscopic analysis of 67 craters produced by all three lasers demonstrated large dissections extending from the craters. The mean diameter of the dissections was smaller for excimer-induced craters (1.38 +/- 0.42 mm; n = 22) than for holmium-induced (2.7 +/- 0.87 mm; n = 22) and thulium-induced (2.37 +/- 0.42 mm; n = 14) craters (p less tha... Developmental biology, Volume 151, Issue 1, 1 1 1992, Pages 166-175 Modulation of activities and RNA level of the components of the plasminogen activation system during fusion of human myogenic satellite cells in vitro. Quax PH, Frisdal E, Pedersen N, Bonavaud S, Thibert P, Martelly I, Verheijen JH, Blasi F, Barlovatz-Meimon G
Primary cultures of human myogenic stem cells (satellite cells) mimic myogenic differentiation. During this process, the expression of the components of the plasminogen activation system underwent modulation. Activities and mRNA levels of tissue-type and urokinase-type plasminogen activator were increased in a reproducible pattern during differentiation. A modulation of the mRNA level of PAI-2 was also observed. Human satellite cells expressed a urokinase receptor and also the mRNA level of this... Abstract

The prognostic value of morphometric features was studied in a group of 33 children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and compared with clinical and hematologic parameters. Air dried, May-Grünwald-Giemsa-stained specimens were prepared from iliac crest biopsies, and for each patient, 150 blasts and their nuclei were selected according to a stratified selection method and measured on a graphic tablet system. Univariate overall survival analysis showed the French-American-British (FAB) class... Abstract
