Current pharmaceutical design, Volume 14, Issue 12, 1 1 2008, Pages 1205-1216 Bridging innate immunity and myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury: the search for therapeutic targets. Arslan F, de Kleijn DP, Timmers L, Doevendans PA, Pasterkamp G
Myocardial infarction necessitates new therapeutic interventions, since it still results in high morbidity and mortality worldwide. Reperfusion therapy itself results in (acceleration of) apoptosis, called myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. For several decades it is known that the inflammatory response during reperfusion is the major cause of myocardial I/R injury. Therapeutic options are limited by lack of (detailed) understanding of intra- and intercellular mechanisms between inflam... Abstract

The American journal of cardiology, Volume 101, Issue 2, 1 1 2008, Pages 144-148 Comparison of multislice computed tomography to gated single-photon emission computed tomography for imaging of healed myocardial infarcts. Henneman MM, Schuijf JD, Dibbets-Schneider P, Stokkel MP, van der Geest RJ, van der Wall EE, Bax JJ
The aim of the study was to evaluate the performance of multislice computed tomography (MSCT) for the detection and semiquantitative analysis of healed myocardial infarct in comparison to single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). Recently, MSCT was shown to allow detection of myocardial infarct by the presence of hypoenhanced areas. However, direct comparisons to other imaging modalities for infarct imaging were scarce. In 69 patients with healed myocardial infarct (>3 months), the... Abstract

JACC. Cardiovascular imaging, Volume 1, Issue 1, 1 1 2008, Pages 94-106 Noncoronary applications of cardiac multidetector row computed tomography. Tops LF, Krishnàn SC, Schuijf JD, Schalij MJ, Bax JJ
Multidetector row computed tomography (MDCT) has a high diagnostic accuracy to evaluate coronary artery stenoses. Additionally, the 4-dimensional aspect of cardiac MDCT allows a comprehensive evaluation of cardiac structure and function. Left ventricular volumes and systolic function can be accurately assessed with MDCT, and imaging of myocardial infarction is a promising application of cardiac MDCT. In addition, MDCT may provide anatomical visualization of heart valves. Also, evaluation of anat... Abstract

The objective of this paper is to describe the three-patch technique for repair of supravalvular aortic stenosis (SVAS). Supravalvular aortic stenosis is a rare malformation as a result of an abnormal thickening of the aortic wall. SVAS may present in two forms: a localized form (affecting only the aortic sinotubular junction) and a diffuse form, where the aortic arch and its side branches are also affected. Since 1960, multiple surgical techniques have been described with the aim of relieving t... Abstract

Journal of nuclear cardiology : official publication of the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology, Volume 15, Issue 1, 1 1 2008, Pages 127-136 Assessment of left ventricular mechanical dyssynchrony by phase analysis of ECG-gated SPECT myocardial perfusion imaging. Chen J, Henneman MM, Trimble MA, Bax JJ, Borges-Neto S, Iskandrian AE, Nichols KJ, Garcia EV
Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) has shown benefits in patients with severe heart failure. However, at least 30% of patients selected for CRT by use of traditional criteria (New York Heart Association class III or IV, depressed left ventricular [LV] ejection fraction, and prolonged QRS duration) do not respond to CRT. Recent studies with tissue Doppler imaging have shown that the presence of LV dyssynchrony is an important predictor of response to CRT. Phase analysis has been developed to... Abstract

The American journal of cardiology, Volume 101, Issue 1, 1 1 2008, Pages 122-126 Influence of renal function on the usefulness of N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide as a prognostic cardiac risk marker in patients undergoing noncardiac vascular surgery. Goei D, Schouten O, Boersma E, Welten GM, Dunkelgrun M, Lindemans J, van Gestel YR, Hoeks SE, Bax JJ, Poldermans D
N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-pro-BNP) is related to stress-induced myocardial ischemia and/or volume overload, both common in patients with renal dysfunction. This might compromise the prognostic usefulness of NT-pro-BNP in patients with renal impairment before vascular surgery. We assessed the prognostic value of NT-pro-BNP in the entire strata of renal function. In 356 patients (median age 69 years, 77% men), cardiac history, glomerular filtration rate (GFR, ml/min/1.73 m(2)),... Abstract

Atherosclerosis, Volume 200, Issue 1, 27 4 2007, Pages 161-167 High HDL cholesterol does not protect against coronary artery disease when associated with combined cholesteryl ester transfer protein and hepatic lipase gene variants. van Acker BA, Botma GJ, Zwinderman AH, Kuivenhoven JA, Dallinga-Thie GM, Sijbrands EJ, Boer JM, Seidell JC, Jukema JW, Kastelein JJ, Jansen H, Verhoeven AJ, REGRESS Study Group
Cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) and hepatic lipase (HL) are two HDL modifying proteins that have both pro- and anti-atherogenic properties. We hypothesized that CETP and HL synergistically affect HDL cholesterol and atherosclerotic risk. To test our hypothesis, we analysed the genotype frequencies of CETP Taq1B (rs708272) and LIPC-514C/T (rs1800588) polymorphisms in male coronary artery disease patients (CAD; n=792) and non-symptomatic controls (n=539). Cases and controls had similar a... Abstract

Tuberculosis (Edinburgh, Scotland), Volume 88, Issue 3, 26 4 2007, Pages 249-261 Double-blind randomized Phase I study comparing rdESAT-6 to tuberculin as skin test reagent in the diagnosis of tuberculosis infection. Arend SM, Franken WP, Aggerbeck H, Prins C, van Dissel JT, Thierry-Carstensen B, Tingskov PN, Weldingh K, Andersen P
Limited specificity of the tuberculin skin test incited the development of in vitro assays based on Mycobacterium tuberculosis-specific antigens such as ESAT-6 that are lacking in Bacillus Calmette Guérin (BCG). In animal studies, intradermal ESAT-6 was safe and induced specific skin test responses. The aim of the study was to assess the safety of intradermal recombinant dimer ESAT-6 (rdESAT-6) compared with tuberculin and to determine the human dose. The study design was a double-blind Phase I... Abstract

Preventive veterinary medicine, Volume 84, Issue 1-2, 26 4 2007, Pages 48-60 The effect of becoming BVDV-free on fertility and udder health in Dutch dairy herds. Berends IM, Swart WA, Frankena K, Muskens J, Lam TJ, van Schaik G
The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of BVDV-free certification of dairy herds on fertility and udder health. Cases were defined as dairy herds that had at least one BVDV-antigen positive animal, subsequently gained the BVDV-free status by participating in the BVDV-control programme of the Animal Health Service (AHS) and maintained this status for at least 2 years. Controls had an unknown status for BVDV and two controls were matched to one case by region and herd size. Data concer... Abstract

Journal of clinical microbiology, Volume 46, Issue 2, 19 3 2007, Pages 757-758 Early impairment of gut function and gut flora supporting a role for alteration of gastrointestinal mucosa in human immunodeficiency virus pathogenesis. Gori A, Tincati C, Rizzardini G, Torti C, Quirino T, Haarman M, Ben Amor K, van Schaik J, Vriesema A, Knol J, Marchetti G, Welling G, Clerici M
Our results show that impairment of the gastrointestinal tracts in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive patients is present in the early phases of HIV disease. This impairment is associated with alterations in gut microbiota and intestinal inflammatory parameters. These findings support the hypothesis that alterations at the gastrointestinal-tract level are a key factor in HIV pathogenesis. Abstract
