Behavioral ecology and sociobiology, Volume 78, Issue 1, 15 3 2024, Pages 12 Wild and captive immature orangutans differ in their non-vocal communication with others, but not with their mothers. Fröhlich M, van Noordwijk MA, Mitra Setia T, van Schaik CP, Knief U
Abstract: In many group-living species, individuals are required to flexibly modify their communicative behaviour in response to current social challenges. To unravel whether sociality and communication systems co-evolve, research efforts have often targeted the links between social organisation and communicative repertoires. However, it is still unclear which social or interactional factors directly predict communicative complexity. To address this issue, we studied wild and zoo-housed immature... Abstract

Introduction: There is now strong evidence to support the positive impact of place-based medical education on the recruitment and retention of the rural health workforce in Australia. Much of this work, however, has been undertaken in the context of 'extended rural clinical placement' - students undertaking part of their medical degree in a rural location. Until recently, there were only a few places in Australia in which students could undertake the entirety of their medical degree in... Abstract

Nature communications, Volume 15, Issue 1, 12 2 2024, Pages 494 Global emergence of a hypervirulent carbapenem-resistant Escherichia coli ST410 clone. Ba X, Guo Y, Moran RA, Doughty EL, Liu B, Yao L, Li J, He N, Shen S, Li Y, van Schaik W, McNally A, Holmes MA, Zhuo C
Carbapenem-resistant Escherichia coli (CREC) ST410 has recently emerged as a major global health problem. Here, we report a shift in CREC prevalence in Chinese hospitals between 2017 and 2021 with ST410 becoming the most commonly isolated sequence type. Genomic analysis identifies a hypervirulent CREC ST410 clone, B5/H24RxC, which caused two separate outbreaks in a children's hospital. It may have emerged from the previously characterised B4/H24RxC in 2006 and has been isolated in ten other... Abstract

Frontiers in immunology, Volume 14, 11 2 2024, Pages 1324618 Establishment and immune phenotyping of patient-derived glioblastoma models in humanized mice. Liu L, van Schaik TA, Chen KS, Rossignoli F, Borges P, Vrbanac V, Wakimoto H, Shah K
Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most aggressive and common type of malignant brain tumor diagnosed in adults. Preclinical immunocompetent mouse tumor models generated using mouse tumor cells play a pivotal role in testing the therapeutic efficacy of emerging immune-based therapies for GBMs. However, the clinical translatability of such studies is limited as mouse tumor lines do not fully recapitulate GBMs seen in inpatient settings. In this study, we generated three distinct, imageable human-GBM (hGBM... Abstract

In this study, we evaluate the histopathologic and atherosclerotic lesions in female and male ATAAD patients. Methods: A total of 68 patients were studied: 51 ATAAD patients (mean age: 62.5 ± 10.8 years; 49% women) and 17 control patients (mean ag... Abstract
Journal of experimental child psychology, Volume 240, 5 1 2024, Pages 105834 Children's expectations about the stability of others' knowledge and preference states. Kurupınar M, Serbest O, Yılmaz D, Soley G
It is a crucial ability to predict others' psychological states across time and contexts. Focusing on cultural inventions such as songs and stories, we contrasted children's attributions of stability with others' knowledge and preference states across time and space and whether these attributions change as a function of children's familiarity with the known/liked items. Children (91 4-year-olds and 97 6-year-olds) were introduced to characters who knew or liked a song, a stor... Abstract

Excitable systems give rise to important phenomena such as heat waves, epidemics and cardiac arrhythmias. Understanding, forecasting and controlling such systems requires reliable mathematical representations. For cardiac tissue, computational models are commonly generated in a reaction-diffusion framework based on detailed measurements of ionic currents in dedicated single-cell experiments. Here, we show that recorded movies at the tissue-level of stochastic pacing in a single variable are suff... Abstract

Advances in experimental medicine and biology, Volume 1441, 1 1 2024, Pages 593-598 Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Connections, Human Genetics. Poelmann RE, Jongbloed MRM, DeRuiter MC
Partial anomalous pulmonary venous connections (PAVC) have been found after abnormal gene expressions involving several syndromes. Total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC) is found in conjunction with heterotaxia syndrome as well as several other syndromes. It has been reported with an autosomal dominance with variable expression and incomplete penetrance. The occurrence is also related to environmental factors which may superimpose on a familial susceptibility for TAPVC. Many pathway... Abstract

The venous pole of the heart where the pulmonary veins will develop encompasses the sinus venosus and the atrium. In the fourth week of development, the sinus venosus consists of a left and a right part receiving blood from the common cardinal vein, the omphalomesenteric and umbilical veins. Asymmetrical expansion of the common atrium corresponds with a rightward shift of the connection of the sinus to the atrium. The right-sided part of the sinus venosus including its tributing cardinal veins e... Abstract

Chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) is a critical end-stage disease that leads to high amputation rates. Over the past few decades, therapeutic angiogenesis has attracted a lot of attention as a means to reduce the necessity for amputations. Especially gene- and cell therapy are regarded to as possible treatment modalities to restore the hampered blood flow. So far, early-phase clinical trials often fail to prove a significant clinical improvement in mortality, amputation rate, and ulcer he... Abstract
