About one-third of patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) use oral anticoagulants (OAC), mainly due to atrial fibrillation. General guidelines advise interrupting OAC in patients with a high risk of bleeding undergoing interventions. However, preliminary observational data suggest that the continuation of OAC during TAVI is safe and may reduce the risk of periprocedural thromboembolic events. The Periprocedural Continuation Versus Interruption of Oral Anticoagulant Dr... Abstract

Background: Diagnosing peripheral arterial disease (PAD) can be challenging owing to medial arterial calcification (MAC) in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Current bedside tests, such as the ankle-brachial index and toe-brachial index, are often insufficient. The maximal systolic acceleration (ACCmax) is a velocimetric Doppler-derived parameter and could be a new promising test in the diagnostic workup of these patients. The primary aim of this study was to... Abstract

Social science & medicine (1982), Volume 338, 26 4 2023, Pages 116348 Making sense of a myocardial infarction in relation to changing lifestyle in the five months following the event: An interpretative phenomenological analysis. Brust M, Gebhardt WA, van Bruggen S, Janssen V, Numans ME, Kiefte-de Jong JC
Objective: Previous research has shown that experiencing an acute cardiac event, such as a myocardial infarction (MI), can lead to lifestyle changes. This study aimed to explore the potential of a MI as a 'teachable moment' (TM) for positive lifestyle changes and to identify psychosocial sensemaking processes that facilitate or hinder the presence of a TM. Method: We conducted semi-structured interviews with 14 patients who suffered their first MI and were hospitalized in a larger Dutc... Abstract
The international journal of cardiovascular imaging, Volume 39, Issue 11, 24 4 2023, Pages 2269-2277 Inter- and intra-observer reproducibility of CT-Leaman score by an independent core lab. Revaiah PC, Kageyama S, Masuda S, Ninomiya K, Kotoku N, Wang B, He X, Tsai TY, Garg S, Mushtaq S, Reiber JHC, Leaman DM, Bax JJ, Budoff MJ, Andreini D, Serruys PW, Onuma Y
To assess the reproducibility of CT-based Leaman score (CT-LeSc). CT-LeSc can non-invasively quantify total coronary atherosclerotic burden and is an independent long-term predictor of cardiac events. Its calculation however relies on the subjective assessment of lesions using coronary computed tomography angiography and therefore is subject to intra- and inter-observer variability. Inter-observer reproducibility was assessed by calculating the CT-LeSc in 50 patients randomly selected from the S... Abstract

Microbiome, Volume 11, Issue 1, 14 2 2023, Pages 224 Coexistence of specialist and generalist species within mixed plastic derivative-utilizing microbial communities. Schaerer L, Putman L, Bigcraft I, Byrne E, Kulas D, Zolghadr A, Aloba S, Ong R, Shonnard D, Techtmann S
Background: Plastic-degrading microbial isolates offer great potential to degrade, transform, and upcycle plastic waste. Tandem chemical and biological processing of plastic wastes has been shown to substantially increase the rates of plastic degradation; however, the focus of this work has been almost entirely on microbial isolates (either bioengineered or naturally occurring). We propose that a microbial community has even greater potential for plastic upcycling. A microbial community has grea... Abstract
