Cell death and differentiation, Volume 6, Issue 10, 1 1 1999, Pages 976-986 The La (SS-B) autoantigen, a key protein in RNA biogenesis, is dephosphorylated and cleaved early during apoptosis. Rutjes SA, Utz PJ, van der Heijden A, Broekhuis C, van Venrooij WJ, Pruijn GJ
In the past few years, a role for apoptotic processes in the development of autoimmune diseases has been suggested. An increasing number of cellular proteins, which are modified during apoptosis, has been described, and many of these proteins have been identified as autoantigens. We have studied the effects of apoptosis on the La protein in more detail and for the first time demonstrate that this autoantigen is rapidly dephosphorylated after the induction of apoptosis. Dephosphorylation of the L... Abstract

Journal of magnetic resonance imaging : JMRI, Volume 10, Issue 3, 1 1 1999, Pages 434-441 Evaluation of coronary artery bypass grafts by magnetic resonance imaging. Langerak SE, Kunz P, de Roos A, Vliegen HW, van Der Wall EE
Magnetic resonance (MR) angiography and flow mapping have the potential to become a major noninvasive diagnostic tool for the assessment of coronary artery bypass graft morphology and function. Several MR sequences, such as conventional non-respiratory compensated methods, and phase contrast cine flow sequences have been reported for the evaluation of bypass graft patency. However the visualization of different graft segments and the detection of graft stenosis remains difficult. Recent advances... Abstract

Indian journal of pediatrics, Volume 66, Issue 5, 1 1 1999, Pages 651-655 Antioxidant defense systems in newborns undergoing phototherapy. Akisü M, Yilmaz D, Tüzün S, Kültürsay N
This paper was designed to investigate whether phototherapy is an oxidative stress in newborn infants undergoing phototherapy. A day-light continuous phototherapy was given to jaundiced 20 term and 16 preterm newborns for 72 hours. We measured serum vitamin E and the activities of red blood cell anti-oxidation enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase) before and after 72 h of phototherapy. Serum vitamin E levels were not different before and after 72 h of phototherapy i... Abstract

Journal of virology, Volume 73, Issue 8, 1 1 1999, Pages 6335-6345 Identification of a novel structural protein of arteriviruses. Snijder EJ, van Tol H, Pedersen KW, Raamsman MJ, de Vries AA
Arteriviruses are positive-stranded RNA viruses with an efficiently organized, polycistronic genome. A short region between the replicase gene and open reading frame (ORF) 2 of the equine arteritis virus (EAV) genome was previously assumed to be untranslated. However, here we report that this segment of the EAV genome contains the 5' part of a novel gene (ORF 2a) which is conserved in all arteriviruses. The 3' part of EAV ORF 2a overlaps with the 5' part of the former ORF 2 (now r... Abstract

The Journal of biological chemistry, Volume 274, Issue 35, 1 1 1999, Pages 24799-24807 Rapid nucleolytic degradation of the small cytoplasmic Y RNAs during apoptosis. Rutjes SA, van der Heijden A, Utz PJ, van Venrooij WJ, Pruijn GJ
We have investigated the fate of the RNA components of small ribonucleoprotein particles in apoptotic cells. We show that the cytoplasmic Ro ribonucleoprotein-associated Y RNAs are specifically and rapidly degraded during apoptosis via a caspase-dependent mechanism. This is the first study describing the selective degradation of a specific class of small structural RNA molecules in apoptotic cells. Cleavage and subsequent truncation of Y RNAs was observed upon exposure of cells to a variety of a... Abstract

Early human development, Volume 55, Issue 3, 1 1 1999, Pages 237-245 Electrocortical brain activity during hypoxia and hypotension in anesthetized newborn lambs. van de Bor M, Meinesz J, Benders MJ, Steendijk P, Lopes Cardozo RH, van Bel F
Blood gas and blood pressure disturbances do influence cerebral blood flow in newborns. To what extent cerebral blood flow changes affect electrocortical brain activity remains uncertain. We studied the effect of severe hypoxia and hemorrhagic hypotension on carotid artery blood flow and electrocortical brain activity in newborn anesthetized lambs. During hypoxia carotid artery blood flow increased significantly, whereas electrocortical brain activity remained unchanged. The hemorrhagic hypotens... Abstract

The Journal of clinical endocrinology and metabolism, Volume 84, Issue 7, 1 1 1999, Pages 2496-2501 Serum inhibin B in combination with serum follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) is a more sensitive marker than serum FSH alone for impaired spermatogenesis in men, but cannot predict the presence of sperm in testicular tissue samples. von Eckardstein S, Simoni M, Bergmann M, Weinbauer GF, Gassner P, Schepers AG, Nieschlag E
The measurement of serum FSH is useful in the diagnostic workup of the infertile male, but fails to predict the presence of sperm in testicular tissue. We investigated whether inhibin B reflects testicular morphology and the presence of sperm more accurately than FSH. Serum inhibin B and gonadotropin levels were determined in 91 infertile men undergoing diagnostic bilateral testicular biopsy. In 52 of the 91 patients multiple samples were taken for testicular sperm extraction (TESE). Inhibin B l... Abstract

Cell and tissue research, Volume 297, Issue 1, 1 1 1999, Pages 119-130 Ultrastructure and distribution dynamics of chloride cells in tilapia larvae in fresh water and sea water. van der Heijden AJ, van der Meij JC, Flik G, Wendelaar Bonga SE
Integumental and branchial chloride cells of tilapia larvae (Oreochromis mossambicus) were studied at the light-microscopical and ultrastructural level. Total numbers and distribution of chloride cells were quantified after immunostaining of cross sections of the entire larvae with an antibody against the alpha-subunit of Na+/K+-ATPase. The majority (66%) of Na+/K+-ATPase-immunoreactive (ir) cells, i.e. chloride cells, of freshwater tilapia larvae were located extrabranchially up to 48 h after h... Abstract

Journal of human evolution, Volume 36, Issue 6, 1 1 1999, Pages 719-741 The conditions for tool use in primates: implications for the evolution of material culture. van Schaik CP, Deaner RO, Merrill MY
In order to identify the conditions that favored the flourishing of primate tool use into hominid technology, we examine inter- and intraspecific variation in manufacture and use of tools in extant nonhuman primates, and develop a model to account for their distribution. We focus on tools used in acquiring food, usually by extraction. Any model for the evolution of the use of feeding tools must explain why tool use is found in only a small subset of primate species, why many of these species use... Abstract

Background: Increased lipoprotein(a) is a risk factor for atherosclerosis, and its concentration in serum is inversely correlated with the size of the apoliprotein(a) [apo(a)] component. The size of the apo(a) gene is determined mainly by the Kringle IV size polymorphism. We have optimized and characterized pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) for apo(a) genotyping. Methods: Established PFGE protocols were adjusted. The changes included the following: (a) increased DNA yields by the use of al... Abstract

Journal of chromatography. A, Volume 844, Issue 1-2, 1 1 1999, Pages 295-305 Trace-level determination of polar flavour compounds in butter by solid-phase extraction and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Adahchour M, Vreuls RJ, van der Heijden A, Brinkman UA
Volatile compounds are responsible for the aromas of butter. A simple technique for the determination of these components is described which is based on solid-phase extraction (SPE) after melting of the butter and separation of the aqueous phase from the fat. Volatile flavours present in the water fraction are collected by off-line SPE on cartidges packed with a copolymer sorbent. After desorption with 500 microliters of methyl acetate, 1-microliter aliquots are quantified and/or identified by g... Abstract
