Background: The prevalence of meningococcal carriage and serogroup distribution is crucial for assessing the epidemiology of invasive meningococcal disease, forecasting outbreaks and formulating potential immunization strategies. Following the meningococcal carriage studies conducted in Turkey in 2016 and 2018, we planned to re-evaluate meningococcal carriage in children, adolescents and young adults during the COVID-19 pandemic period. Methods: In the MENINGO-CARR-3 study, we collected nasophar... Abstract

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common heart rhythm abnormality and is a leading cause of heart failure and stroke. This large-scale meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies increased the power to detect single-nucleotide variant associations and found more than 350 AF-associated genetic loci. We identified candidate genes related to muscle contractility, cardiac muscle development and cell-cell communication at 139 loci. Furthermore, we assayed chromatin accessibility using assay f... Background: Intravascular lithotripsy (IVL) is increasingly used to treat coronary artery calcification (CAC). This study aimed to identify clinical and procedural factors associated with IVL treatment success. Methods: This retrospective analysis included 454 patients (73 ± 9 years, 75% male) treated with IVL from the multicenter BENELUX-IVL registry (May 2019 to February 2024). Treatment success was defined as achieving residual coronary diameter stenosis Abstract
Radiation and environmental biophysics, 4 1 2025 Commissioning and performance assessment of diodes and MOSFETs in in-vivo dosimetry for external beam radiation therapy. Al Kharusi O, Al Mamari R, Al Hosni B, Al Amri I, Al Fishawy M, Boulassel MR, Bouchareb Y
The precision of radiation therapy treatment depends on several calibration and quality assurance processes. In-vivo dosimetry (IVD) is used in external beam radiotherapy to evaluate the delivered versus planned dose as a patient-specific quality assurance verification procedure. This study aimed at assessing the performance of diodes (EDP-103G and EDP-203G) and metal oxide semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) and corresponding correction factors followed by IVD evaluation in differe... Heart failure (HF) is a major contributor to global morbidity and mortality. While distinct clinical subtypes, defined by etiology and left ventricular ejection fraction, are well recognized, their genetic determinants remain inadequately understood. In this study, we report a genome-wide association study of HF and its subtypes in a sample of 1.9 million individuals. A total of 153,174 individuals had HF, of whom 44,012 had a nonischemic etiology (ni-HF). A subset of patients with ni-HF were st... Abstract
ERJ open research, Volume 11, Issue 2, 3 1 2025, Pages 619-2024 Enzymatic therapy versus video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery for pleural infections: a systematic review and meta-analysis. de Jonge WR, Smits B, Ket JCF, Altenburg J, Annema J, Daniels JMA, Dickhoff C, van Dorp M, Braun J, Korevaar DA, Heineman DJ
Aims: Parapneumonic pleural infections are frequently encountered, but the optimal treatment regimen remains controversial. Structural, architectural, contractile, or electrophysiological alterations may occur in the left atrium (LA). The concept of LA cardiopathy is supported by accumulating scientific evidence demonstrating that LA remodelling has become a cornerstone diagnostic and prognostic marker. The structure and the function of the LA and left atrial appendage (LAA), which is an integral part of the LA, are key elements for a better understanding of multiple clinical conditions, most notably atrial fibrillat... This updated Heart Valve Collaboratory framework addresses the growing concern for transcatheter valve failure (TVF) following transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). With the increasing volume of redo-TAV and surgical TAV explantation, there is a critical need for standardized pathways and protocols for evaluating TVF using echocardiography and cardiac computed tomography (CT) angiography. This document clarifies prior definitions of bioprosthetic valve deterioration and bioprosthetic va... Abstract

British journal of anaesthesia, Volume 134, Issue 4, 28 4 2025, Pages 1009-1017 Regulation of cerebrovascular resistance below the lower limit of cerebral autoregulation during induced hypotension: an observational study. Kho E, van den Dool REC, Mahes SS, Corsmit OT, Vlaar APJ, Koolbergen DR, Veelo DP, Sperna Weiland NH, Immink RV
Background: To maintain adequate perfusion, cerebral blood flow (CBF) is preserved by changes in cerebrovascular resistance (CVR) inversely related to fluctuations in mean arterial blood pressure (MAP). It has been hypothesised that during progressive hypotension, a lower limit of cerebral autoregulation (LLCA) is reached beyond which cerebrovascular dilation becomes exhausted and CBF starts to decrease together with BP. We tested this hypothesis by assessing CVR above and below the LLCA. Method... Abstract

Extended reality (XR) modalities in health care are quickly evolving. There is a lack of systematically described developmental process and the "how to" execute a business-case guidance. This article formulates a systematic approach on the technical developmental steps and generation of business-case to guide the iterative development of an XR tool. An international expert group was established and several available frameworks related to entrepreneurship and business-case development w... Abstract

Luijten D, Rodenburg T, Bogaard HJ, Kianzad A, Ruigrok D, Croon P, Smeele P, Vliegen HW, Vonk Noordegraaf A, Meijboom LJ, Klok FA
Introduction: Right heart catheterization (RHC) is the diagnostic standard for establishing residual pulmonary hypertension (PH) after pulmonary endarterectomy (PEA) in patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH). A potential non-invasive alternative diagnostic test could be electrocardiography (ECG)-derived ventricular gradient optimized for right ventricular pressure overload (VG-RVPO). Methods: We studied 66 CTEPH patients who underwent PEA. A subgroup of 20 patients a... Abstract
