European journal of immunology, Volume 38, Issue 9, 1 1 2008, Pages 2389-2400 Development of human plasmacytoid dendritic cells depends on the combined action of the basic helix-loop-helix factor E2-2 and the Ets factor Spi-B. Nagasawa M, Schmidlin H, Hazekamp MG, Schotte R, Blom B
Plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDC) are central players in the innate and adaptive immune response against viral infections. The molecular mechanism that underlies pDC development from progenitor cells is only beginning to be elucidated. Previously, we reported that the Ets factor Spi-B and the inhibitors of DNA binding protein 2 (Id2) or Id3, which antagonize E-protein activity, are crucially involved in promoting or impairing pDC development, respectively. Here we show that the basic helix-loop... Abstract

The Journal of bone and joint surgery. British volume, Volume 90, Issue 9, 1 1 2008, Pages 1205-1209 Early magnetic resonance imaging compared with bone scintigraphy in suspected scaphoid fractures. Beeres FJ, Rhemrev SJ, den Hollander P, Kingma LM, Meylaerts SA, le Cessie S, Bartlema KA, Hamming JF, Hogervorst M
We evaluated 100 consecutive patients with a suspected scaphoid fracture but without evidence of a fracture on plain radiographs using MRI within 24 hours of injury, and bone scintigraphy three to five days after injury. The reference standard for a true radiologically-occult scaphoid fracture was either a diagnosis of fracture on both MRI and bone scintigraphy, or, in the case of discrepancy, clinical and/or radiological evidence of a fracture. MRI revealed 16 scaphoid and 24 other fractures. B... Abstract

PloS one, Volume 3, Issue 8, 29 5 2008, Pages e3084 Targeted chromosomal insertion of large DNA into the human genome by a fiber-modified high-capacity adenovirus-based vector system. Gonçalves MA, Holkers M, van Nierop GP, Wieringa R, Pau MG, de Vries AA
A prominent goal in gene therapy research concerns the development of gene transfer vehicles that can integrate exogenous DNA at specific chromosomal loci to prevent insertional oncogenesis and provide for long-term transgene expression. Adenovirus (Ad) vectors arguably represent the most efficient delivery systems of episomal DNA into eukaryotic cell nuclei. The most advanced recombinant Ads lack all adenoviral genes. This renders these so-called high-capacity (hc) Ad vectors less cytotoxic/imm... Abstract

The American journal of cardiology, Volume 102, Issue 9, 27 4 2008, Pages 1156-1158 Prognostic significance of myocardial ischemia by dobutamine stress echocardiography in patients without angina pectoris after coronary revascularization. Pedone C, Elhendy A, Biagini E, van Domburg RT, Schinkel AF, Di Pasquale G, Bax JJ, Poldermans D
The clinical utility of stress testing in patients without angina pectoris after revascularization has been questioned. Dobutamine stress echocardiography (DSE) is an established technique for detection of myocardial ischemia and cardiac risk stratification. We studied the prognostic value of DSE in 393 patients without typical angina pectoris after coronary revascularization. Ischemia was incremental to clinical data in predicting all-cause death (hazard ratio 3.5, 95% confidence interval 1.8 t... Abstract

Prolonged myocardial stretch typically leads to hypertrophy of cardiomyocytes. As integrins are cellular receptors of stretch, we hypothesize that integrin stimulation induces cardiomyocyte hypertrophy. Integrins of neonatal rat cardiomyocytes (NRCMs) were stimulated with a peptide containing the Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) sequence for 24 h. For comparison, alpha(1)-adrenergic stimulation by phenylephrine (PE) for 24 h was applied. Saline-treated NRCMs were used as control. The hypertrophic response was... Abstract

Valvular heart disease is an important cause of morbidity and mortality. Aortic stenosis and mitral regurgitation account for the majority of patients with native valve disease. Although surgical treatment provides satisfactory outcome, a large proportion of patients do not undergo a surgical intervention, because of the high estimated operative risk and multiple comorbidities. Recently, new techniques that enable percutaneous treatment of valvular heart disease have been developed and their fea... Abstract
