Reviews in medical virology, Volume 16, Issue 3, 1 1 2006, Pages 167-186 Adenovirus: from foe to friend. Gonçalves MA, de Vries AA
Human adenoviruses (HAdVs) can cause mild respiratory, gastrointestinal, urogenital and ocular disease. Knowledge about HAdVs has been expanding for more than five decades putting them amongst the most-studied viruses. This continued interest stems, to a great extent, from the fact that these double-stranded DNA viruses have proven to be a versatile tool to probe the basic phenomena of eukaryotic cells. HAdV research has led to the discovery of, for instance, RNA splicing and greatly contributed... Abstract

The number of patients with chronic heart failure is increasing rapidly in the Western world. Despite the introduction of new pharmacologic therapies, the prognosis of these patients remains poor. Left ventricular (LV) dyssynchrony is a frequently observed feature in patients with heart failure, and is recognized as an important predictor of poor outcome if left untreated. The presence of LV dyssynchrony leads to inefficient LV contraction with a decreased cardiac output. Moreover, patients with... Abstract

The Annals of thoracic surgery, Volume 81, Issue 4, 1 1 2006, Pages 1455-1459 Phosphorylcholine coating of bypass systems used for young infants does not attenuate the inflammatory response. Draaisma AM, Hazekamp MG, Anes N, Schoof PH, Hack CE, Sturk A, Dion RA
Background: Contact of blood with the artificial surfaces of the cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) system is considered to be a main cause of complement activation. Improving the biocompatibility of the system by reduction of contact activation of blood elements and thereby producing less inflammatory response is evidently desired, especially for neonates and infants who are more susceptible to the deleterious effects of CPB. A phosphorylcholine coating, Phisio, is designed to mimic the natural inter... Abstract

Two patients recently underwent successful repeat left ventricular anterior aneurysmectomies at our institution. Both patients had undergone a linear repair at first operation. Over time severe heart failure relapsed and echocardiography revealed the recurrence of a voluminous antero-septo-apical aneurysm in both cases, associated with severe mitral regurgitation. Because of still preserved motion of at least three of the basal segments of the left ventricle, a repeat ventriculoplasty according... Abstract
