Chromogranin A (CgA), a neuroendocrine pro-hormone, is proteolytically cleaved into bioactive peptides, most notably catestatin (CST) and pancreastatin (PST), which exert opposing effects on metabolic and inflammatory processes. Using CgA- and CST knockout (KO) mice, we investigated the roles of these peptides in pancreatic endocrine function, morphology, neurotransmitter dynamics, and systemic glucose homeostasis. CST-KO mice displayed impaired insulin secretion in vivo (but not ex vivo), disru... Abstract

Nature human behaviour, 24 4 2025 Culture is critical in driving orangutan diet development past individual potentials. Howard-Spink E, Tennie C, Mitra Setia T, Perawati D, van Schaik C, Barrett B, Whiten A, Schuppli C
Humans accumulate extensive repertoires of culturally transmitted information, reaching breadths exceeding any individual's innovation capacity (culturally dependent repertoires). It is unclear whether other animals require social learning to acquire adult-like breadths of information in the wild, including by key developmental milestones, or whether animals are capable of constructing their knowledge repertoires primarily through independent exploration. We investigated whether social lear... Abstract

Bladder tumours (BTs) pose significant clinical challenges due to their high recurrence rates and risk of progression to invasive malignancies, which emphasises the need for early and accurate detection. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), with its superior soft tissue contrast, is a potential modality for BT detection. To analyse the MRI scans, artificial intelligence (AI) models are increasingly being leveraged. However, these models are often limited by a scarcity of annotated datasets, challen... Abstract
Communications medicine, Volume 5, Issue 1, 18 3 2025, Pages 472 Blood and tissue correlates of steroid non-response in checkpoint inhibition-induced immune-related adverse events. van Eijs MJM, van der Wal MM, Klotškova HB, Dautzenberg NMM, Schuiveling M, Verheijden RJ, van Schaik FDM, Oldenburg B, Nierkens S, UNICIT Consortium, Suijkerbuijk KPM, van Wijk F
Background: High-dose steroids constitute the cornerstone of first-line treatment for immune-related adverse events (irAEs) associated with immune checkpoint inhibitors, but compromise antitumor immunity. A deeper understanding of irAEs and their response to steroids can improve management. Methods: Using a multi-omics approach, we investigated blood- and tissue-based correlates of steroid response, focusing on gastro-intestinal irAEs, in the largest cohort to date. Results: Here we show clear t... Abstract
Consciousness and cognition, Volume 137, 17 3 2025, Pages 103964 Disentangling perceptual from non-perceptual expectation biases in short-term memory. Koopmans JG, Thorat S, Quek GL, Peelen MV
There is debate about how many items can be represented in visual consciousness at once. Evidence against the view that visual consciousness consists of many detailed items has come from a study using the partial-report paradigm. De Gardelle et al. (2009) showed that rotated letters shown in non-cued (i.e., unattended) parts of a briefly presented letter array are sometimes illusorily perceived as upright. Presumably, the expectation that letters are generally seen upright modulated a rotated le... Abstract

Background: Arrhythmic mitral valve prolapse (AMVP) is a cause of sustained ventricular tachyarrhythmias (VAs) and sudden cardiac death (SCD), but the arrhythmias remain only partially understood. Objectives: In this worldwide collaboration, this study aimed to characterize the VAs occurring in AMVP patients, explore factors associated with various types of sustained VA, and describe common triggering mechanisms. Methods: In this multicenter retrospective cohort study, we collected patients with... Abstract
Nederlands tijdschrift voor geneeskunde, Volume 169, 13 2 2025, Pages D8782 [Cognitive bias in surgery: correctable failure or inevitably human?] Hamming JF, Adriaanse MA
A review in the Annals of Surgery addressed the role of cognitive bias and heuristics in creating surgical complications and death. Bias and heuristics in decision making is not new, but the fact that surgeons and clinicians in general are influenced by them is apparently still noteworthy. The idea that clinicians act purely rational or should persists. But doctors are not computers. Nevertheless interventions aiming at improving behaviour of clinicians is based on the assumption that more knowl... Abstract

Frontiers in cardiovascular medicine, Volume 12, 10 2 2025, Pages 1682714 Nordic consensus document on Evolut FX+ transcatheter aortic valve implantation: optimizing index implantation and longer-term outcomes. Khokhar AA, Savontaus M, Al-Ani A, Terkselsen CJ, Bieliauskas G, van der Heijden A, Amin AAA, James S, Russell K, De Backer O
Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVI) is an established treatment strategy for patients with severe symptomatic aortic stenosis (AS). Multiple landmark randomized controlled trials have consistently demonstrated the safety, efficacy, and longer-term durability of the CoreValve/Evolut (Medtronic, MN, USA) transcatheter aortic valve (TAV) platform in treating severe AS. These findings have supported the expansion of TAVI to younger patients with longer life expectancy, in whom an optimized... Abstract

Background: The dysconnection hypothesis of schizophrenia posits that widespread synaptic inefficiencies lead to altered macroscale brain connectivity, contributing to symptom severity and cognitive deficits in individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD). Emerging evidence suggests that physical exercise may help to ameliorate these connectivity abnormalities and associated clinical impairments. Aims: This study investigated whether reductions in functional dysconnectivity following... Abstract

Methods: An international, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial randomly assigned patients with STEMI in a 1:1:1 ratio to receive a single subcutaneous injection of zalunfiban (0.11 mg/kg or 0.13 mg/kg) or placebo. The primary efficacy end point was a hierarchical proporti... Abstract
Thrombosis research, Volume 256, 9 2 2025, Pages 109533 Predicting clinically relevant bleeding in new-onset atrial fibrillation patients initiating oral anticoagulant therapy: External validation of the AF-BLEED score. van der Horst SFB, Chu G, Seelig J, Trinks-Roerdink EM, Voorhout L, de Vries TAC, van Alem AP, Beukema RJ, Boersma LVA, Brouwer MA, Ten Cate H, Faber LM, de Groot JR, Gu YL, den Hartog FR, de Jong JSSG, de Jong Y, Kirchhof CJHJ, Kleijwegt FS, Klok FA, Kruip MJHA, Lenderink T, Luermans JG, Meeder JG, Otten AM, Pisters R, Pos L, Prins FJ, Römer TJ, Smeets F, Tahapary GJM, Theunissen LJHJ, Tieleman RG, Timmer SAJ, Tichelaar V, Trines SA, van der Voort P, Velthuis S, de Vrey EA, Walhout RJ, Hemels MEW, Rutten FH, Geersing GJ, Huisman MV
Background: Atrial fibrillation/flutter (AF/AFL) is associated with an increased stroke risk, for which oral anticoagulation (OAC) is often indicated. Bleeding risk assessment is crucial in these patients to mitigate bleeding complications, yet AF guidelines do not recommend the use of any bleeding risk score (e.g., HAS-BLED) due to concerns about predictive accuracy. The AF-adapted VTE-BLEED (AF-BLEED) score was developed to predict major bleeding (MB) post-OAC initiation. Aims: Evaluate the in... Abstract

Introduction: Socially assistive robots (SARs) have shown promise in pediatric healthcare by helping children manage the stress and anxiety associated with medical procedures. However, limited research exists on the specific robot behaviors that are most effective in reducing negative emotions in children during stressful interventions. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of two emotional support strategies provided by a SAR during a vaccination event: internal emotion regulation throu... Abstract
