Journal of endovascular therapy : an official journal of the International Society of Endovascular Specialists, Volume 13, Issue 2, 1 1 2006, Pages 145-151 Aneurysm sac pressure monitoring: effect of pulsatile motion of the pressure sensor on the interpretation of measurements. Hinnen JW, Koning OH, Vlaanderen E, van Bockel JH, Hamming JF
Purpose: To determine the effect of pulsatile motion of graft-attached pressure sensors on the accuracy of aneurysm sac pressure measurement. Methods: Pressure inside a pressure box was measured with a sensor attached to a stent-graft (Sensorgraft) facing a sensor in fixed position (Sensorbox). Maximum inter-sensor variation of Sensorgraft and Sensorbox was determined in static experiments. Experiments with pulsatile circulation were performed with a compliant and a noncompliant stent-graft at 1... Abstract

The Annals of thoracic surgery, Volume 81, Issue 4, 1 1 2006, Pages 1455-1459 Phosphorylcholine coating of bypass systems used for young infants does not attenuate the inflammatory response. Draaisma AM, Hazekamp MG, Anes N, Schoof PH, Hack CE, Sturk A, Dion RA
Background: Contact of blood with the artificial surfaces of the cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) system is considered to be a main cause of complement activation. Improving the biocompatibility of the system by reduction of contact activation of blood elements and thereby producing less inflammatory response is evidently desired, especially for neonates and infants who are more susceptible to the deleterious effects of CPB. A phosphorylcholine coating, Phisio, is designed to mimic the natural inter... Abstract

The Turkish journal of pediatrics, Volume 48, Issue 2, 1 1 2006, Pages 166-171 Internal carotid artery occlusion associated with Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection in a child. Tanir G, Aydemir C, Yilmaz D, Tuygun N
We describe a seven-year-old girl with severe pneumonia probably associated with Mycoplasma pneumoniae who developed right-sided hemiparalysis and right central facial paralysis soon after the onset of the disease. Cerebral magnetic resonance imaging revealed left corpus striatum acute infarction and magnetic resonance angiography demonstrated left internal carotid artery occlusion. She also had positive antiphospholipid and anticardiolipin antibodies and increased fibrinogen and D-dimer levels. Abstract

Nederlands tijdschrift voor geneeskunde, Volume 150, Issue 17, 1 1 2006, Pages 937-942 [Acute ST-segment elevation also possible in non-coronary disorders]. Jessurun GA, Zijlstra F, Siebelink HJ
Three patients were referred with symptoms of acute coronary syndrome. The ECG results indicated ST-segment elevation. A 39-year-old man had normal coronary arteries and was eventually diagnosed with pericarditis and myocarditis. A 71-year-old woman had ST-segment elevation caused by mechanical pressure from a chest drain that was inserted for a pneumothorax. A 62-year-old man was admitted to the intensive care unit and was found to have ST-segment elevation related to sepsis and non-significant... Abstract

The Annals of thoracic surgery, Volume 81, Issue 4, 1 1 2006, Pages 1495-1497 Reconstruction of the left ventricle after previous aneurysmectomy. Koch AD, Holman ER, Versteegh MI, Klautz RJ, Somer ST, Bax JJ, Dion RA
Two patients recently underwent successful repeat left ventricular anterior aneurysmectomies at our institution. Both patients had undergone a linear repair at first operation. Over time severe heart failure relapsed and echocardiography revealed the recurrence of a voluminous antero-septo-apical aneurysm in both cases, associated with severe mitral regurgitation. Because of still preserved motion of at least three of the basal segments of the left ventricle, a repeat ventriculoplasty according... Abstract

Journal of cardiovascular electrophysiology, Volume 17, Issue 4, 1 1 2006, Pages 431-434 Fusion of electroanatomical activation maps and multislice computed tomography to guide ablation of a focal atrial tachycardia in a fontan patient. Tops LF, de Groot NM, Bax JJ, Schalij MJ
Introduction: Ablation of atrial tachycardia (AT) occurring late after cardiac surgery for congenital heart disease can be challenging due to the complexity of the arrhythmogenic substrate. Methods and results: We performed an ablation procedure in a Fontan patient with an AT using a new approach combining 3D electroanatomical mapping with multislice computed tomography (MSCT). This technique visualizes the position of the catheter in relation to the endocardium, thereby improving delineation of... Abstract

Journal of nuclear medicine : official publication, Society of Nuclear Medicine, Volume 47, Issue 4, 1 1 2006, Pages 574-580 Effect of intramyocardial injection of autologous bone marrow-derived mononuclear cells on perfusion, function, and viability in patients with drug-refractory chronic ischemia. Beeres SL, Bax JJ, Dibbets P, Stokkel MP, Zeppenfeld K, Fibbe WE, van der Wall EE, Schalij MJ, Atsma DE
Unlabelled: Intramyocardial injection of bone marrow cells has been proposed as a new therapeutic option for patients with chronic ischemic heart disease. We investigated whether autologous bone marrow-derived mononuclear cell injection into the myocardium of patients with drug-refractory ischemia reduces anginal symptoms, improves left ventricular (LV) function, increases myocardial perfusion, and alters the extent of scar tissue. Methods: In 25 patients (mean age +/- SD, 64 +/- 10 y; 21 male)... Abstract

Arteriosclerosis, thrombosis, and vascular biology, Volume 26, Issue 6, 30 5 2006, Pages 1236-1245 Lipoprotein lipase S447X: a naturally occurring gain-of-function mutation. Rip J, Nierman MC, Ross CJ, Jukema JW, Hayden MR, Kastelein JJ, Stroes ES, Kuivenhoven JA
Lipoprotein lipase (LPL) hydrolyzes triglycerides in the circulation and promotes the hepatic uptake of remnant lipoproteins. Since the gene was cloned in 1989, more than 100 LPL gene mutations have been identified, the majority of which cause loss of enzymatic function. In contrast to this, the naturally occurring LPL(S447X) variant is associated with increased lipolytic function and an anti-atherogenic lipid profile and can therefore be regarded as a gain-of-function mutation. This notion comb... Abstract

Arteriosclerosis, thrombosis, and vascular biology, Volume 26, Issue 6, 30 5 2006, Pages 1383-1390 Hypercholesterolemia reduces collateral artery growth more dominantly than hyperglycemia or insulin resistance in mice. van Weel V, de Vries M, Voshol PJ, Verloop RE, Eilers PH, van Hinsbergh VW, van Bockel JH, Quax PH
Objective: Collateral artery development (arteriogenesis), a vital compensatory mechanism in patients with arterial obstructive disease, may be deregulated by vascular risk factors, eg, diabetes or hypercholesterolemia. Here, we compared the effects of either disturbed glucose metabolism or disturbed lipid metabolism on arteriogenesis. Methods and results: Femoral artery occlusion was performed in streptozotocin(STZ)-treated mice, nonobese diabetic (NOD) mice, and insulin-resistant Ob/Ob mice on... Abstract

The American journal of cardiology, Volume 97, Issue 10, 23 4 2006, Pages 1423-1426 Influence of cardiac risk factors and medication on length of hospitalization in patients undergoing major vascular surgery. van de Pol MA, van Houdenhoven M, Hans EW, Boersma E, Bax JJ, Feringa HH, Schouten O, van Sambeek MR, Poldermans D
Major vascular surgery is associated with a long in-hospital length of stay (LOS). Cardiac risk factors identify patients with an increased risk. Recent studies have associated statin, aspirin, and beta-blocker therapies with improved postoperative outcome. However, the effect of all these factors on LOS has not been defined. Our aims were to determine the effect of cardiac risk factors and (preventive) statin, aspirin, and beta-blocker therapy on LOS and to deduce from these factors a model tha... Abstract
