The optimal choice of graft material in patients ≥70 years of age undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting remains unknown. A systematic review of literature was conducted by searching PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases for original publications that compared bilateral internal thoracic artery (BITA) grafting with single internal thoracic artery grafting in patients ≥70 years of age. Data were extracted by 2 independent investigators and meta-analyzed with the use o... Abstract

Left ventricular (LV) systolic dysfunction in cardiac amyloidosis (CA) is associated with poor prognosis. This study aimed to investigate the prognostic implications of right ventricular (RV) systolic dysfunction in CA. A total of 93 patients diagnosed with CA who underwent standard and speckle-tracking echocardiography were included. During a median follow-up of 17 (5 to 38) months, 42 patients (45%) died. Nonsurvivors were more likely to present with immunoglobulin light-chain amyloidosis and... Abstract

Introduction: Current literature is inconclusive about the optimal treatment of elderly patients with displaced intra-articular distal radius fractures. Cast treatment is less invasive and less expensive than surgical treatment. Nevertheless, surgery is often the preferred treatment for this common type of distal radius fracture. Patients with a non-acceptable position after closed reduction are more likely to benefit from surgery than patients with an acceptable position after closed reduction.... Abstract

Bacterial pathogen identification, which is critical for human health, has historically relied on culturing organisms from clinical specimens. More recently, the application of machine learning (ML) to whole-genome sequences (WGSs) has facilitated pathogen identification. However, relying solely on genetic information to identify emerging or new pathogens is fundamentally constrained, especially if novel virulence factors exist. In addition, even WGSs with ML pipelines are unable to discern phen... Abstract

Aims: Patients with heart failure (HF) have not been shown to benefit from statins. In a post hoc analysis, we evaluated outcomes in ODYSSEY OUTCOMES in patients with vs. without a history of HF randomized to the proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) inhibitor alirocumab or placebo. Methods and results: Among 18 924 patients with recent acute coronary syndrome (ACS) receiving intensive or maximum-tolerated statin treatment, the primary outcome of major adverse cardiovascular even... Purpose: This study aims to investigate the correlation between myocardial area at risk at coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) and the ischemic burden derived from myocardial computed tomography perfusion (CTP) by using the 17-segment model. Methods: Forty-two patients with chest pain complaints who underwent a combined CCTA and CTP protocol were identified. Patients with reversible ischemia at CTP and at least one stenosis of ≥ 50% at CCTA were selected. Myocardial area at risk was... Abstract

ESC heart failure, Volume 9, Issue 3, 30 5 2022, Pages 2007-2012 The first experience with sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor for the treatment of systemic right ventricular failure. Egorova AD, Nederend M, Tops LF, Vliegen HW, Jongbloed MRM, Kiès P
In congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries, the morphological right ventricle supports the systemic circulation. This chronic exposure to pressure overload ultimately leads to systemic right ventricular (sRV) dysfunction and heart failure. Pharmacological options for the treatment of sRV failure are poorly defined and no solid recommendations are made in the most recent guidelines. Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors are a new class of antihyperglycaemic drugs t... Abstract

Netherlands heart journal : monthly journal of the Netherlands Society of Cardiology and the Netherlands Heart Foundation, Volume 30, Issue 10, 29 5 2022, Pages 481-485 Percutaneous left atrial appendage closure reduces cost of care independent of the institutional cumulative caseload in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation. D'Ancona G, Arslan F, Safak E, Weber D, Ince H
Background: Data on the impact of the cumulative percutaneous left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) caseload on cardiovascular outpatient and hospitalisation costs are limited. Methods: The present single-institution analysis includes patients treated consecutively from the beginning of our LAAC experience in January 2012 until December 2016. Pre- and post-LAAC costs for hospitalisation and ambulatory visits were included. Results: A total of 676 patients underwent percutaneous LAAC (using the Wa... Abstract

The Pharmacogene Variation Consortium (PharmVar) catalogs star (*) allele nomenclature for the polymorphic human CYP3A5 gene. Genetic variation within the CYP3A5 gene locus impacts the metabolism of several clinically important drugs, including the immunosuppressants tacrolimus, sirolimus, cyclosporine, and the benzodiazepine midazolam. Variable CYP3A5 activity is of clinical importance regarding tacrolimus metabolism. This GeneFocus provides a CYP3A5 gene summary with a focus on aspects regardi... Abstract

Min JK, Chang HJ, Andreini D, Pontone G, Guglielmo M, Bax JJ, Knaapen P, Raman SV, Chazal RA, Freeman AM, Crabtree T, Earls JP
Background: Atherosclerotic plaque characterization by coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) enables quantification of coronary artery disease (CAD) burden and type, which has been demonstrated as the strongest discriminant of future risk of major adverse cardiac events (MACE). To date, there are no clinically useful thresholds to assist with understanding a patient's disease burden and guide diagnosis and management, as there exists with coronary artery calcium (CAC) scoring. Aim: This study explores the relationship between in vivo 4D flow cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) derived blood flow energetics in the total cavopulmonary connection (TCPC), exercise capacity and CMR-derived liver fibrosis/congestion. Background: The Fontan circulation, in which both caval veins are directly connected with the pulmonary arteries (i.e. the TCPC) is the palliative approach for single ventricle patients. Blood flow efficiency in the TCPC has been associated with exercise ca... Abstract
