Applied and environmental microbiology, Volume 75, Issue 6, 16 3 2009, Pages 1525-1533 Bacteroidales diversity in ring-billed gulls (Laurus delawarensis) residing at Lake Michigan beaches. Jeter SN, McDermott CM, Bower PA, Kinzelman JL, Bootsma MJ, Goetz GW, McLellan SL
This study investigated the occurrence and diversity of Bacteroidales fecal bacteria in gulls residing in the Great Lakes region. Members of this bacterial order have been widely employed as human and bovine host-specific markers of fecal pollution; however, few studies have focused on gulls, which can be a major source of fecal indicator bacteria and pathogens at beaches. We found a low but consistent occurrence of Bacteroidales in gulls at five beaches in three different counties spanning the... Abstract

Significant progress has been made in the clinical management of a variety of cardiovascular diseases. Nevertheless, the therapeutic efficacy of the current treatment modalities for atherosclerosis and restenosis is not fully sufficient in a large proportion of patients. One of the major contributing factors is the clinical and biological heterogeneity of these still life-threatening diseases, which involve processes that we do not fully understand at the moment. Over the past decades, it has be... Abstract

Tissue & cell, Volume 41, Issue 3, 7 1 2009, Pages 214-221 Ultrastructural features and elemental distribution in eggshell during pre and post hatching periods in the green turtle, Chelonia mydas at Ras Al-Hadd, Oman. Al-Bahry SN, Mahmoud IY, Al-Amri IS, Ba-Omar TA, Melgheit KO, Al-Kindi AY
Eggshells were randomly collected from turtle nests immediately after oviposition and at the end of incubation to examine the ultrastructural features using scanning JSM-5600LV microscopy. Three layers were recognized; an outer calcareous, a middle multistrata and an inner membrane. The calcareous layer had loose nodular units varying in shape and size without interlocking attachments. In freshly laid eggs, each nodular unit had spicules arranged in folded stacks. The spicules became unfolded du... Abstract

Pediatric research, Volume 65, Issue 1, 1 1 2009, Pages 27-32 Pulmonary vein, dorsal atrial wall and atrial septum abnormalities in podoplanin knockout mice with disturbed posterior heart field contribution. Douglas YL, Mahtab EA, Jongbloed MR, Uhrin P, Zaujec J, Binder BR, Schalij MJ, Poelmann RE, Deruiter MC, Gittenberger-de Groot AC
The developing sinus venosus myocardium, derived from the posterior heart field, contributes to the atrial septum, the posterior atrial wall, the sino-atrial node, and myocardium lining the pulmonary and cardinal veins, all expressing podoplanin, a coelomic and myocardial marker. We compared development and differentiation of the myocardium and vascular wall of the pulmonary veins (PV), left atrial dorsal wall, and atrial septum in wild type with podoplanin knockout mouse embryos (E10.5-E18.5) b... Disease markers, Volume 26, Issue 2, 1 1 2009, Pages 75-83 Metabolic background determines the importance of NOS3 polymorphisms in restenosis after percutaneous coronary intervention: A study in patients with and without the metabolic syndrome. Pons D, Monraats PS, Zwinderman AH, de Maat MP, Doevendans PA, de Winter RJ, Tio RA, Waltenberger J, Jukema JW
Variation in the NOS3 gene has been related to the development of restenosis. The Glu298Asp polymorphism has previously been investigated for its effect on NO levels and the development of restenosis. However, the variability of findings gave rise to the hypothesis that the functional significance of this polymorphism may only become manifest under conditions of endothelial dysfunction. Since patients with the metabolic syndrome are known to have endothelial dysfunction, we aimed to investigate... Abstract

Clinical chemistry and laboratory medicine, Volume 47, Issue 11, 1 1 2009, Pages 1343-1350 Considerations for the development of a reference method for sequencing of haploid DNA--an opinion paper on behalf of the IFCC Committee on Molecular Diagnostics, International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine. Rousseau F, Gancberg D, Schimmel H, Neumaier M, Bureau A, Mamotte C, van Schaik R, Payne D, Pazzagli M, Young I
Following the completion of sequencing of the human genome, there has been a very rapid increase in the development of new molecular diagnostic tests. However, the numerous genetic tests and genetic testing technologies offered do not always satisfy essential quality criteria required to ensure confidence in the results that are produced. This is of particular importance for genetic tests since many patients may be tested for a particular genetic defect only once in their lifetime. Thus, there i... Abstract

Tijdschrift voor psychiatrie, Volume 51, Issue 10, 1 1 2009, Pages 727-736 [Treatment for chronic depression: cognitive behavioral analysis system of psychotherapy (CBASP)]. Wiersma JE, van Schaik DJ, Blom MB, Bakker L, van Oppen P, Beekman AT
Background: Chronic depression is a common disorder in secondary care. Treatment results for this group of depressed patients are often disappointing and the existing treatment protocols are insufficiently tailored to chronic MDD. For this reason, an effective psychotherapeutic treatment will constitute a welcome addition to the range of treatments currently available for chronically depressed patients. Aim: To describe 'cognitive behavioral analysis system of psychotherapy' (CBASP), t... Abstract

Tijdschrift voor psychiatrie, Volume 51, Issue 9, 1 1 2009, Pages 699-703 [Clozapine use and abrupt smoking cessation; a potentially life-threatening combination]. Ruissen A, van Schaik AM, Beijnen JH
A 58-year-old man was in a period of 3 weeks twice admitted to a general hospital with symptoms of clozapine intoxication, i.e. loss of consciousness. We are of the opinion that the patient developed clozapine intoxication because he had been prescribed clozapine (300 mg/day) and at the same time had suddenly stopped smoking. The link is confirmed in the literature. We therefore recommend that clozapine-dosage be adjusted to a patient's smoking behaviour. Abstract

Expert review of cardiovascular therapy, Volume 7, Issue 1, 1 1 2009, Pages 49-56 Myocardial perfusion imaging to assess ischemia using multislice computed tomography. van Werkhoven JM, Schuijf JD, Bax JJ
Multislice computed tomography (MSCT) coronary angiography is an accurate noninvasive anatomic imaging technique; but it cannot determine the functional relevance of the lesions it detects. However, MSCT perfusion imaging can detect the presence of myocardial infarction during rest and assess viability using delayed enhancement. With recent developments in MSCT scanner technology, it has become possible to image myocardial perfusion and the capability of MSCT to determine the presence of ischemi... Abstract
