Human gene therapy, Volume 17, Issue 6, 1 1 2006, Pages 683-691 Treatment with intramuscular vascular endothelial growth factor gene compared with placebo for patients with diabetes mellitus and critical limb ischemia: a double-blind randomized trial. Kusumanto YH, van Weel V, Mulder NH, Smit AJ, van den Dungen JJ, Hooymans JM, Sluiter WJ, Tio RA, Quax PH, Gans RO, Dullaart RP, Hospers GA
Despite advances in revascularization techniques, limb salvage and relief of pain cannot be achieved in many diabetic patients with diffuse peripheral vascular disease. Our objective was to determine the effect of intramuscular administration of phVEGF165 (vascular endothelial growth factor gene-carrying plasmid) on critical limb ischemia (CLI) compared with placebo (0.9% NaCl). A double-blind, placebo-controlled study was performed in 54 adult diabetic patients with CLI. The primary end point w... Abstract

The American journal of pathology, Volume 168, Issue 6, 1 1 2006, Pages 2027-2035 TR3 nuclear orphan receptor prevents cyclic stretch-induced proliferation of venous smooth muscle cells. de Waard V, Arkenbout EK, Vos M, Mocking AI, Niessen HW, Stooker W, de Mol BA, Quax PH, Bakker EN, VanBavel E, Pannekoek H, de Vries CJ
In coronary artery bypass surgery, the patency of arterial grafts is higher than that of venous grafts because of vein-graft disease, which involves excessive proliferation of venous smooth muscle cells (SMCs) and subsequent accelerated atherosclerosis. We studied the function of TR3 nuclear orphan receptor (TR3) in the early response of SMCs to mechanical strain, a major initiator of vein-graft disease. We demonstrate that TR3 expression is induced in human saphenous vein segments exposed ex vi... Abstract
The journal of ECT, Volume 22, Issue 2, 1 1 2006, Pages 153-154 Gastric rupture after electroconvulsive therapy. van Schaik AM, Klumpers UM, de Gast HM, Kubbe DA, Stek ML
We report on a rare complication, gastric rupture, which developed during electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) under general anesthesia. The patient developed symptoms of gastric rupture immediately after recovery from the first ECT session. An x-ray confirmed the clinical diagnosis, and an emergency laparotomy was conducted. The patient recovered without further complications. We review the literature and discuss ECT and potential risk factors relevant to the pathophysiology of gastric rupture. Furt... Abstract

The British journal of clinical psychology, Volume 45, Issue Pt 2, 1 1 2006, Pages 145-152 A factor analysis of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale 3rd Edition (WAIS-III) in a low IQ sample. Jones JJ, van Schaik P, Witts P
Objectives: Previous factor analytic studies of the WAIS, WAIS-R and WAIS-III used standardization samples, (representing the general population), clinical populations (e.g. psychiatric) and 'non-clinical' groups (e.g. older adults). These studies endorsed the reliability of the scales in such samples and supported theoretical models of intelligence. The WAIS-III (1997) includes four Indexes based on factor analysis, which provide clinically useful information to practitioners, but hav... Abstract

American journal of physiology. Heart and circulatory physiology, Volume 291, Issue 5, 26 4 2006, Pages H2424-30 Characterization of right ventricular function after monocrotaline-induced pulmonary hypertension in the intact rat. Hessel MH, Steendijk P, den Adel B, Schutte CI, van der Laarse A
We characterized hemodynamics and systolic and diastolic right ventricular (RV) function in relation to structural changes in the rat model of monocrotaline (MCT)-induced pulmonary hypertension. Rats were treated with MCT at 30 mg/kg body wt (MCT30, n = 15) and 80 mg/kg body wt (MCT80, n = 16) to induce compensated RV hypertrophy and RV failure, respectively. Saline-treated rats served as control (Cont, n = 13). After 4 wk, a pressure-conductance catheter was introduced into the RV to assess pre... Abstract

European journal of echocardiography : the journal of the Working Group on Echocardiography of the European Society of Cardiology, Volume 8, Issue 3, 23 4 2006, Pages 229-231 Mobile right heart thrombus and massive pulmonary embolism. de Vrey EA, Bax JJ, Poldermans D, van der Wall EE, Holman ER
The current report describes a patient with pulmonary embolism, treated unsuccessfully with heparin. Transthoracic echocardiography revealed free-floating right heart thrombus. Migrating deep vein thrombus to the right heart was suspected. Transesophageal echocardiography confirmed origin of the thrombus in the inferior cava vein. Mortality rate of mobile right heart thrombus is over 40%, therefore urgent surgical embolectomy was performed with relief of symptoms. Abstract

The American journal of cardiology, Volume 98, Issue 2, 19 3 2006, Pages 145-148 Diagnostic accuracy of 64-slice multislice computed tomography in the noninvasive evaluation of significant coronary artery disease. Schuijf JD, Pundziute G, Jukema JW, Lamb HJ, van der Hoeven BL, de Roos A, van der Wall EE, Bax JJ
The purpose of the present study was to determine the diagnostic accuracy of current 64-slice multislice computed tomography (MSCT) in the detection of significant coronary artery disease, using conventional coronary angiography as the gold standard. In 61 patients scheduled for conventional coronary angiography, 64-slice MSCT was performed and evaluated for the presence of significant (>or=50% luminal narrowing) stenoses. One patient had to be excluded because of a heart rate>90 beats/min... Abstract

The American journal of cardiology, Volume 98, Issue 2, 19 3 2006, Pages 230-235 Cardiac resynchronization therapy in patients with systolic left ventricular dysfunction and symptoms of mild heart failure secondary to ischemic or nonischemic cardiomyopathy. Bleeker GB, Schalij MJ, Holman ER, Steendijk P, van der Wall EE, Bax JJ
Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) is beneficial in selected patients with moderate to severe heart failure (New York Heart Association [NYHA] classes III to IV). Patients with mildly symptomatic heart failure (NYHA class II) are currently not eligible for CRT and the potential beneficial effects in these patients have not been well studied. Fifty consecutive patients in NYHA class II heart failure and 50 consecutive patients in NYHA classes III to IV (control group) were prospectively incl... Abstract

Clinical research in cardiology : official journal of the German Cardiac Society, Volume 95, Issue 6, 18 3 2006, Pages 344-348 Coronary vasospasm-induced acute diastolic dysfunction in a patient with Raynaud's phenomenon. Tschöpe C, Westermann D, Steendijk P, Kasner M, Rudwaleit M, Schwimmbeck PL, Poller WC, Schultheiss HP
We present the case of a patient with severe dyspnea and Raynaud's phenomenon. We could clarify, using invasive techniques including left ventricular conductance catheterization and coronary ergonovine provocation, that isolated diastolic dysfunction induced by coronary vasospasm were responsible for the symptoms. Systolic function was not affected. Short-term infusions with the prostacyclin analogue iloprost, known to act as a disease-modifying agent in patients suffering from Raynaud'... Abstract

The American journal of cardiology, Volume 98, Issue 1, 6 1 2006, Pages 111-115 Association of plasma N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide with postoperative cardiac events in patients undergoing surgery for abdominal aortic aneurysm or leg bypass. Feringa HH, Bax JJ, Elhendy A, de Jonge R, Lindemans J, Schouten O, van den Meiracker AH, Boersma E, Schinkel AF, Kertai MD, van Sambeek MR, Poldermans D
Postoperative cardiac events are related to myocardial ischemia and reduced left ventricular function. The utility of N-terminal-pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-pro-BNP) for preoperative cardiac risk evaluation has not been evaluated. The objective of this study was to assess whether plasma NT-pro-BNP predicts postoperative cardiac events in patients who undergo major vascular surgery in addition to clinical and dobutamine stress echocardiographic data. One hundred seventy consecutive patient... Abstract

American journal of physiology. Heart and circulatory physiology, Volume 291, Issue 4, 5 1 2006, Pages H1580-6 Right and left ventricular function after chronic pulmonary artery banding in rats assessed with biventricular pressure-volume loops. Faber MJ, Dalinghaus M, Lankhuizen IM, Steendijk P, Hop WC, Schoemaker RG, Duncker DJ, Lamers JM, Helbing WA
In many patients with congenital heart disease, the right ventricle (RV) is subjected to abnormal loading conditions. To better understand the state of compensated RV hypertrophy, which could eventually progress to decompensation, we studied the effects of RV pressure overload in rats. In the present study, we report the biventricular adaptation to 6 wk of pulmonary artery banding (PAB). PAB resulted in an RV pressure overload to approximately 60% of systemic level and a twofold increase in RV m... Abstract

European journal of internal medicine, Volume 17, Issue 3, 1 1 2006, Pages 201-203 The effect of prednisolone on serum sodium concentration. Alizadeh Dehnavi R, Tamsma JT, Edo Meinders A
Background: Glucocorticoids are widely used in clinical practice. In addition to their anti-inflammatory effects, they influence the salt and water homeostasis. Although parts of the latter action have been studied individually, there are no reports in stable outpatients on the net effect of glucocorticoids on serum sodium concentration. Methods: A group of 23 patients on chronic prednisolone therapy was compared with a control population with respect to serum sodium concentration. Intra-individ... Abstract

The Netherlands journal of medicine, Volume 64, Issue 5, 1 1 2006, Pages 160-162 Acute dystonic reaction to metoclopramide in patients carrying homozygous cytochrome P450 2D6 genetic polymorphisms. van der Padt A, van Schaik RH, Sonneveld P
Background: Extrapyramidal syndromes (EPS) are clinically relevant side effects of metoclopramide which are often not anticipated. Patients and methods: Two patients who received metoclopramide developed an acute dystonic reaction. Symptoms disappeared after biperiden or trihexyphenidyl were given. Molecular analysis of the CYP2D6 gene was performed using a PCR-based method. Results: Both patients were homozygous for inactive CYP2D6 alleles (CYP2D6*4/*4 and CYP2D6*4/*5), which are associated wit... Abstract
Nederlands tijdschrift voor geneeskunde, Volume 150, Issue 21, 1 1 2006, Pages 1188-1192 [A man with oral ulcers caused by hypereosinophilic syndrome and a good response to the tyrosine-kinase inhibitor imatinib]. Verstappen MC, Mattijssen V, van der Reijden BA, van der Heijden AJ, Wahab PJ, de Vries RA
For the last 2 years, a 55-year-old man had painful, recurrent oral ulcers. Histological examination showed non-specific inflammation. Eosinophilia in the blood and bone marrow raised the suspicion of hypereosinophilic syndrome. No other specific organ involvement was observed. The diagnosis was confirmed by detection of the fusion gene 'FIP1-like-1-platelet-derived growth factor receptor alpha' (FIP1L1-PDGFRA) in the peripheral blood and bone marrow. Treatment with the tyrosine-kinase... Abstract

Pharmacogenetics and genomics, Volume 16, Issue 5, 1 1 2006, Pages 331-337 Restenosis after percutaneous coronary intervention is associated with the angiotensin-II type-1 receptor 1166A/C polymorphism but not with polymorphisms of angiotensin-converting enzyme, angiotensin-II receptor, angiotensinogen or heme oxygenase-1. Wijpkema JS, van Haelst PL, Monraats PS, Bruinenberg M, Zwinderman AH, Zijlstra F, van der Steege G, de Winter RJ, Doevendans PA, Waltenberger J, Jukema JW, Tio RA
Objectives: The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is thought to play a major role in the pathophysiology of de-novo restenotic lesions and in-stent restenosis after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), is thought to beneficially influence these processes. We examined the effect of pharmacologic as well as genetic RAS interactions on restenosis in a large population of consecutive patients undergoing PCI, and evaluated possible gene-gene interactions in both systems.
